1: Power Play. Written by Louise Simonson. Penciled by June Brigman. Inked by Bob Wiacek.
Very tightly plotted. Within the first five pages of a 48-page comic
(36 pages, after ads) we get the personalities and motivations of every
principal character in the book. The only thing we don't get right away
is how the four Power kids get their powers, and when we DO get that, that's
done well, too. The kids have to stumble around to find their powers, and,
in the process, very believably destroy an enemy spaceship.
Rating: Four stars
2: Butter Fingers. Written by Louise Simonson. Penciled by June
Brigman. Inked by Bob Wiacek.
The standard "catch-up" issue for people who might have missed
Issue #1. Still, more than enough nice moments, including the debut of the
costumes, and page 14, done almost entirely in shadow-art. Notable script
moments include the very malicious debut of Carmody, and Jack's attempt
to talk the team out of trouble (Katie: "I saw Star
Wars too, dummy. It didn't work for Han
Solo, either!")

3. Kidnapped! Written by Louise Simonson. Penciled by June Brigman.
Inked by Bob Wiacek.
Something of a slowdown from the first two issues. The issue is less
of a team effort, and focuses more on Jack, who discovers his shrinking
power in this issue. Although nothing at all is made of it, this issue is
also the debut of the kids' bottomless, dimensional-gateway pockets (Julie
pulls an apple out of a form-fitting suit)

4. Rescue! Written by Louise Simonson. Penciled by June Brigman.
Inked by Bob Wiacek.
The Jack-Katie relationship gets explored a bit in this issue, which
features the kids desperately trying to free their parents, and themselves,
from the Snarks. The kids spend a lot of time looking for a tooth Katie
loses, which would normally seem to be something of a drag on an issue,
but the Kymellian coin Katie gets for it (in lieu of a Tooth Fairy in outer
space) proves to have sinister ramifications later.
Rating: Three and 1/2 stars
5. Homecoming! Written by Louise Simonson. Penciled by Mary Wilshire.
Inked by Bob Wiacek.
An action-packed transition issue. In short order, the Powers return
to Earth, have an adventure that sets up their future conflicts with Carmody,
and establish how they get from a beach house to New York City, where the
action is. Hints (which cause debate for months) are dropped that the parents
know about the kids' powers.
Rating: Three stars
