Glow Worm and Bulk are captured and given to the High Evolutionary, who has their mutant powers purged away. The New Mutants receive a letter from Amara. She is in Nova Roma, engaged to someone she has never met, but Empath is still with her. Stack next captures Amara, despite Empath's efforts to save her. He contacts Frost, who calls on Magneto for aid. He reiterates that the New Mutants are grounded and not to user the powers, for their own safety. They immediately port to Amara's rescue. In the ensuing fracas, Dani is thrown into Stack's machine. Bulk reverses its controls and makes Dani's powers stronger. She pulls a monster and demons from Stack's and Purge's minds, and they become real, attacking the New Mutants until Dani summons her spirit lance. The Hellfire Club arrives, angered that their plans for Amara have been foiled, and the New Mutants port away before Magneto catches them. Illyana ports Amara back home. The officer takes her into custody until Brightwind stops him. He lets Dani go. Magneto returns to the mansion and tells the New Mutants that Amara is safe. She was attacked by a rebellious demon named Skunge, who touched her and was transformed into circuitry. Illyana, afraid of being likewise transformed, used her Soulsword on her own arm and passed out. She awoke in the mansion, but in an alternate universe where no one knew her, even Colossus. She is unable to use her magic or port, and the X-Men attack her as a villain. She escapes them. Lockheed leads her to a huge, hidden spaceship, where she is attacked by the Brood. She is able to port to Limbo, then ports back to save Lockheed, picking up a gun and armor on the way. The Brood explains that it escaped the destruction of its world with eggs and cloned the X-Men to serve as hosts. The ersatz X-Men overhear, and together they attack and kill it.. Illyana ports them to Limbo, kills the eggs in them, and sends them back to their ship. Issue: New Mutants 64 Date: Jun-88 Story: Instant Replay! Warlock wants Doug to come back so badly that it triggers Dani's power to create a mirage of him. Magneto has of necessity lied to Doug's parents, saying he was shot in a hunting accident. The New Mutants attend his viewing, and Rahne runs out, crying, and Warlock is upset over the idea of burial, but Roberto and Sam calm them down, reminding them of heaven and of the resurrection. Warlock returns to the funeral parlor that night and reanimates Doug's body. He takes the body to see Mrs. Ramsey and then Rahne, scaring them both, and the New Mutants make him return it to the funeral home. They attend the funeral the next day. Illyana decides to avenge her brother's death on Forge. Issue: New Mutants 65 Date: Jul-88 Story: Demons! Destiny reveals that Illyana's lust for revenge will result in Limbo demons invading this world, but she ignores the warning and attacks Forge. Issue: New Mutants 66 Date: Aug-88 Story: Sorcerer's Duel! She is about to kill him when Dani pulls forth her greatest fear: herself as ultimate evil. Illyana decides not to kill, frees Forge and the New Mutants, and with some difficulty returns to her normal state. Magneto is wearing his villain costume again. Spyder tells Gosamyr that he has bought Lila as a slave and plans to take possession of her. The monster accountants attack Lila, but she just works it into the concert, assuring Sam that if things get too bad, she will teleport them all away. The other New Mutants, listening on the radio, realize that there is trouble. About to tell Magneto, they overhear him discussing power neutralizers with Emma Frost and decide they can't trust him. Illyana ports them to the concert in time to see Lila neutralized and captured. Gosamyr asks the New Mutants for help against Spyder; he runs a crooked textile industry and owns her family. Issue: New Mutants 68 Date: Oct-88 Story: Illusion! But she learns enough so she can port Gosamyr's stolen space yacht into nearby space. Gosamyr provides the team with new clothes, making Rahne look like Lila. This fails to impress Sam, however, and we learn that Gosamyr has the power to intensify emotions. She uses this to make Roberto and Sam fall for her, and she tricks Dani into creating Rahne's dearest wish: a Sam who is in love in her, but she refuses him because he is supposed to be Lila's boyfriend. Rahne realizes it is a mirage and is angry at Dani; Dani realizes Gosamyr made her do it and is angry at her. An alien spacecraft detains them, and when Dani accidentally offers a bribe to one of its officers, the admiral orders their destruction. Gosamyr's power is making them act strangely. Dani, with a headache, wanders through the alien ship, fighting some of them. Illyana ports the rest to her rescue, via a now very rebellious Limbo. Magneto notices that his students have run off again. He resolves to find them and protect them by any means, even violent ones. Warlock realize that Gosamyr is a villain, and when Illyana uses her sword on her, she turns temporarily into a monster, and Illyana is stuck as the Darkchilde. The New Mutants continue to Spyder's lair and are captured by him. Magneto meets with the Hellfire Club to discuss weird happenings in New York (prologue to the Inferno crossover). Gosamyr helps the New Mutants escape, and they promise to free her family, whom Spyder has forced into a cocoon state so they will produce precious silk. They emerge from that state as monsters with enough power to destroy a world, and attack everyone. Rahne and Sam rescue Lila, and she transports the monsters into the local sun, killing them and presumably herself. Roberto still sides with Gosamyr, since her and her family's villainy was forced on them. Illyana ports the team to Limbo, which is now under S'ym's control. She describes her early life in Limbo, how she killed her versions of the X-Men in order to survive. She ports again, and they move backward in time to see S'ym beating her as a child, and N'astirh beating him for doing so. Porting again, they run into a past version of N'astirh, who explains that he was one of Limbo's demons who mastered Belasco's spells and offers to help Illyana defeat S'ym if she embraces her Darkchilde nature and perhaps becomes his bride. She takes the bargain. Illyana reclaims her Soulsword and opens a portal to earth, through which the New Mutants and Limbo demons begin raining down on Times Square. N'astirh tricked Illyana to get her to open the portal. Sam, Rahne, Roberto, Rictor, Boom Boom, and Colossus separate Illyana from S'ym and she ports them to Limbo except for Colossus, who vows to kill every Limbo demon to get his sister back. Illyana decides to rule Limbo as Darkchilde in order to save the earth, but Rahne leads the others through stepping disks to try to go into the past and prevent Illyana from ever becoming the Darkchilde. They find her as a small child and port back to the present, where the Darkchilde chooses to negate her own existence. She sends her friends to earth, sucks all the demons back to Limbo in a blinding flash of light, and only the young, innocent Illyana survives. Rusty takes everyone back to X-Factor's Ship. It allows the mutants to enter, plus Illyana and Warlock, but decides that Gosamyr is too dangerous to live. In her current larval state, she has the power to make men love and fight over her; later she will be transformed into a planet-destroying monster. It sends her off to a planet where she can learn to control herself. Magneto and Emma plan to overthrow Shaw, and the New Mutants return to the mansion. Issue: New Mutants 75 Date: May-89 Story: King of the Hill! The Hellfire Club arrives, battles, and subdues the New Mutants. Magneto learns that Illyana is now a child and the New Mutants are quitting the school. Shaw immediately challenges his position as White King, and they battle. Magneto decides that his attempt to combine the various mutant groups against humanity has failed. He overloads Shaw's mutant ability to absorb kinetic energy and subdues him. Magneto, Emma, and Selene vote him out as Black King. Magneto frees the New Mutants, warning them that the real world is not black and white, and that they will ultimately learn that his way, the way of force, is best. Issue: New Mutants 76 Date: Jun-89 Story: Splash! They decide to go to X-Factor's ship. The X-Terminators are meanwhile scuba-diving and find an unusual artifact. It turns out to be a horn from Atlantis (from Fantastic Four 4!), and when Boom Boom blows it, a giant squid attacks Ship, pulling it underwater. The New Mutants and Namor arrive and agree to help retrieve Ship. They use their powers and manage only to annoy the squid, who captures them inside Warlock in the form of a submarine. Dani makes a solid mirage of dynamite, which Sam, Rusty, and Skids use to blow the squid's brains out. Ship is restored just as X-Factor arrives, and they agree to let the New Mutants stay on.
