Cerebro survives, and goes to Alex. Creed is now president; he pardons SHIELD and promotes Fury, who aims to round up all super-powered beings, starting with the Six. Alex, Ororo, and Bob hold them off long enough to let everyone escape. Ororo pilots them to a safe haven: Forge's Eagle's Rest. The Hellfire Club has fled there from New York, and Kitty leads them as Black Queen. Shaw says Creed and Fury want to eradicate all super-beings and were the ones who bombed the X-Men. Cap confirms the gov- ernment approached him, and the other Avengers went bad. Sunfire says the same is happening in Japan. Forge has created a new Cerebro Mark XIII to detect and catalog all mutants; Alex and Shaw think this is dangerous. Sunfire apologizes, but says he has a duty to kill them all. Cap, Alex, and Bob take him down. He suicides, exploding the Eagle's Rest with himself. The Mark XII rises from the ru- ins. They are accosted by the United Guild of Thieves and Assassins and brought to their boss, Gambit, who is married to Bella Donna; they have a daughter Raven. He tells them to get out of his town. Then SHIELD attacks; they want Raven, who is a very powerful mutant. Bella Donna is killed; turns out Julien had betrayed them to SHIELD, and he takes Raven to them. It is Scott, and he catches his brother, says the Starjammers have been killed, and someone is after him. The run to Scott's ship, but then Scott is blasted in the back. Alex turns to find Sinister. He wakes in a lab, next to Scott. He gets a fin- ger loose and frees Scott's visor. They blow up the lab and flee. Sinister lets them go; he has Jean Grey as an ally and X-Man in storage. The rest of the Six arrive, just as Dianne bursts out in flames: she is a mutant, too, and Jack turns against her. Punisher and goons attack; Jean Grey shows up and helps them escape. Xavier has let loose a "psychic tidal wave", summoning them. A second wave, which Xa- vier rides, lands him at their feet, with the Horsemen close behind. Warren pontificates on truth and trust and feuds with War. He demands they turn over Xavier; they are not sure it's really him but fight to defend him anyway. He tries to earn their trust by enter- ing their minds and helping them win. He re- alizes Cap is a secret mutant and prompts Alex to blast Warren. Before he can get them to kill the Horsemen, Apocalypse arises. Issue: Mutant X 20 Date: Jun-00 Story: Everything You Thought You Knew? He tries to get Scotty away from Mad- die but only scares him. After a while, he doesn't know what reality to believe. Jean flies toward his window that night, and Maddie attacks her, driving her off. Xavier talks to Alex, then makes him remember that he pretended to ally with Apocalypse so he could protect Scotty from him. But Jean inter- rupts in her psychic body, saying it's all lies. Xavier quickly defeats her on the psi-plane. Suddenly, he is with the Six infiltrating Apocalypse's fortress. Jean returns, and Alex blasts her but then realizes she's right. Xavier reveals himself as a villain and brushes aside the Six with a gesture. Alex remembers dying again, but Jean reaches out to him, and he awakes with her and Apocalypse. Issue: Mutant X 21 Date: Jul-00 Story: The Good? The Bad.. And Things Get Ugly! (22 pages) Feature Characters: Havok, Bloodstorm, Brute, Ice-Man, Capt. Magneto, alive, restrains him and convinces him to listen. Apocalypse saved the X-Men from the nuke (iss. 15). Magneto recounts how he and Xavier formed the X-Men and defeated the Shadow King. But Xavier was scarred, and he fell in love with Moira, whom Magneto also loved. Fighting Juggernaut, an enraged Xavier killed her, then disappeared, allied with Sinister, and began recruiting mutants. Sinister, double-dealing as always, told Mag- neto to ally with Apocalypse, who alone could stop Xavier. Then Scotty was born. Alex returns to the Six and learns that Xavier is with Scotty. He plans to build a new world order of powerful telepaths, so Alex blasts him. Scotty gets in the way, so Xavier blasts him, then Alex gets mad and blasts him away. The Six arrive, then Xavier puts on psi armor and reveals that he has absorbed the minds of all the world's telepaths, starting with the Shadow King. Issue: Mutant X 22 Date: Aug-00 Story: Tremble Before His Might (22 pages) Feature Characters: Havok, Bloodstorm, Brute, Ice-Man, Capt. The Six and the Horsemen scuffle, but Alex assures them they are allies, previously controlled by Xavier/Shadow King. Still, Scotty has to get Hank off Warren, whom Apocalypse then reigns in. Xavier has also been manipulating SHIELD and public opinion in general, and he plans to use a fake Galactus to cause a panic, thus strengthening the Shadow King and allowing them/him to control the world. Alex and his assorted allies go to New York to stop the ersatz world-devourer, and they eas- ily defeat his heralds. Magnus, Apocalypse, and Alex melt Galactus, then Xavier and his ally Sinister activate the resulting genetically engineered goo, covering everyone. They break into a high-security installation and find Warren, who reveals that Ororo is a vampire and attacks them both, with the Horsemen. Ororo uses the creatures of the night to delay them, and explains that Dracula bit her and she left the X-Men, unable to resist her bloodlust. She and Remy find their objective: two chil- dren. The Horsemen break in, and Warren slashes Remy. Dying, he convinces Ororo to bite him, so he can survive and save the chil- dren. She does, then brings down the house, and they escape. Story 2: A Sinister Thread Part 1: First Blood (14 pages) Feature Characters: Bloodstorm, Gambit Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Villains: Mikey "the Moose" McCormick, Vinnie "the Hammer" Falco; the Assassins Guild including Angelique, Jean-Claude, Pierre; Sinister Other Characters: Synopsis: Remy, now a vampire, fights the bloodlust. On the dark streets of the Big Easy, a woman is attacked by two of Kingpin's thugs. But this is an ambush by the Assassins Guild. Before anything can happen, a mist enshrouds all. Remy is feeding, and Angelique is his des- sert. At dawn, he hides in a mausoleum and sends Ororo away. Sinister arrives, takes the boy, and tells Remy to dispose of the girl. When he refuses, they fight to a standstill. Remy keeps the girl safe, and Sinister take the boy (Nate Grey?) to his genetics lab. All get beat up and yelled at. Jean Grey and Apocalypse erect psionic shielding, barely able to hold out against Xa- vier. Because Alex is not from this universe, Xavier hasn't figured him out yet, so he has time to wreak havoc on Sinister's machinery. But Xavier has Scotty, X-Man, and Raven cap- tive, to use as batteries, and holds them hos- tage. He plans to merge the whole world into one mind: his. This comes as a surprise to his ally Sinister, and they fight. Xavier fells him quickly, then starts absorbing minds. He blasts Apocalypse and Alex, but then Scotty and Ra- ven intervene, pouring their energy into Alex, and he blasts Xavier. Apocalypse dies; Xavier raises a hand toward Alex, but Hank takes the blast. Bob freezes Xavier, but then he just dis- appears. They get Hank to a med lab, then Alex and Gambit send Scotty, Raven, and Elektra to the X-Men's base on the moon. The team bickers about what to do next: hunt down Xavier or let the anti-mutant hysteria die down. Alex thinks back to his universe, his real friends and family and considers resign- ing. Hank rises from the med pod, his intelligence restored. He has been having flashback memories of the explosion that took away his intelligence, and he wants answers. Alex rashly tries to blast in, but Hank made it indestructible. He finally remembers how to open the door, and they enter. Bob shows up, and he and Hank clown around, Bob nearly falling into a portal to the Negative Zone, which Hank discovered. Hank now plans to investigate what happened to this world's Havok. Bob quizzes Alex about his world's Iceman, but he doesn't remember how he cured Loki's curse. Hank remembers that he had been trying to cure Bob. A fire starts in the lab, and Alex and Bob come running. Bob puts it out with ice, and Hank remembers all: Havok started the explosion that cost Hank his mind and Bob his chance at a cure. This world's Havok had an affair with Sue Storm, which made Maddie jealous, and she turned to Bob for comfort, which made Havok jealous. So he sabotaged the lab. Hank has also discovered a way to send Alex back to his world, and says their Havok may already be there.
