Six months ago in South America, SHIELD arrested warden Coffin. He justified himself for creating a ³decency deficit² in culture for SHIELD to fight against, then single-handedly defeated the agents. The he made a deal to return to the U.S. Jubes and Paige make jokes about Jonoıs underwear as he does laundry; Emma was up late and needs coffee; Sean is training Monet and Angelo in hand-to-hand, fooling them both and infuriating Monet until she swings at him and he has to put her down. He says they all miss Ev (see iss. 70). Paige has been scanning the Internet and noticed kids being taken secretly from their schools in the wake of Columbine. She thinks somethingıs up. Somers is a captive of gray-uniformed men. Paige points out a pattern of abductions of suspicious children, to something called ³the house of correction,² and the government is denying all knowledge. The team has voted to look into it, even though Sean says theyıre not ready. In a facility in the desert, Somers gets experimented on. He tries to use his power to escape, but a child-skeleton-cyborg thing stops him. The girls break into Somersı school, while the freakish-looking boys have to wait in the limo. Monet races through the files, and Paige hacks the Internet, and they get a location. Coffin interviews Somers in his office full of trophy heads, including a human. He says he runs the facility for the government, which is afraid of its children. At the airport, the team is attacked. Paige husks to rubber and finds she has super-speed. The gunmen are quickly subdued, and Paige realizes there was a bug on the file they took. Coffin is aware of it all and has Baxter prepare the special children. Jubes suggests a frontal assault, since theyıve already lost the advantage of surprise. Sean agrees and puts Jubes in charge. Paige plans to expose the whole place on the Internet. They attack. Jono blasts; Monet releases her frustration over Evıs death (iss. 70); Paige opens the cells. Coffin orders in the special children: half-alive cyborgs from a previous house of correction closed in 1973. Jubes sends Angelo to locate Coffin, while they destroy the machine parts of the cyborgs. The cyborgs reluctantly plow through the team, and Coffin tells Angelo heıs authorized by the government to fix mutant children, but they keep dying instead. The team realizes they have to kill the cyborgs, to put them out of their misery. Sean blows Coffin through the wall. Paige has contacted all the childrenıs parents and the press, who converge on the facility by car and copter. She pulps her lovers mind as she leaves. Monet bumps into Ev in the hall, and they have mutually attraction. Jubes observes. In the cafeteria, everyone but Angelo is disgusted by the school food. They see bullies picking on a ³freak,² and when Angelo intervenes, they pick on him. One pulls the skin on his arm, realizes heıs a mutant, and calls his parents. Emma and Sean are displeased, but the kids are angered by the injustice of it all. Ev tries to explain to Jubes about him and Monet, but sheıs not listening, so he goes for a walk with Monet. They kiss. Adrienne observes and plots. She says she needs to hide out from the London Hellfire Club, and sheıll expose the school for harboring mutants if they donıt help her. Jubes gets a snowball in the face from some mutant-hating kids. She runs away, and Emma loads her gun. She and Sean talk to the team about recent incidents and tell them to stay in their rooms until they can sort things out. Especially since Adrienneıs back, and they suspect her. Jubesıs room is on fire, and anti-mutant graffiti on the walls. They boys are in Jonoıs, debating whether or not they should hate the humans who have been harassing them. Emma has been fending off calls from angry parents, and Adrienneıs story doesnıt check out with the Hellfire Club. She and Sean think sheıs really there to hurt the kids. Monet and Paige snoop around and hear lots of anti-mutant talk, and then they see a boy getting beat up in the cafeteria. Monet breaks it up, revealing her powers. Then she meets Ev in the library, and they make out. The boy who was beaten is badly hurt; Penance, Artie, and Leech have been sent to Morocco for safety; Emma senses hate and fear on campus. All the parents descend upon the school simultaneously, and a riot ensues, while Adrienne exults and says itıll be worse when the bombs go off. Sean gets the team to evacuate the campus and find the bombs. Emma and Adrienne fistfight in high heels. Sean wants to keep Ev close, so he has someone to synch to, but he goes off to find bombs. Monet goes after him, but bullies corner him first. He synchs with Monet, although sheıs still out of his range, tosses the bullies, and throws himself on a bomb. Emma has had it and pulls her gun on Adrienne (see iss. 75). Evıs synch wasnıt complete, and heıs dead. Later, Emma has mindwiped everyone and destroyed all evidence. She and Sean want the kids to be more proactive from now on. Emma has bought everyone new, comfortable uniforms and cell phones to keep in contact. On his own in the streets, Jono gets stared at, but he finds his sanctuary in a record store, and a cute if freakily accoutered girl, Rana. He talks to her, telepathically, and she freaks and runs. Jono has to blast the tire off a beer van before it hits her. Turns out sheıs deaf, and she gets used to telepathy as they have some coffee. They agree theyıre both different and they wonıt judge each other. But Jono canıt change his life in one day, and heıs just lost a friend because he was different. He plays it safe and walks away, but she goes with him. They see a crowd talking about flying girls, and Rana gives Jono her number and a passionate kiss before she hops in a cab. In the limo back to Snow Valley, Jono decides mutants canıt live in a world that hates and fears them and tosses the phone number out the window. Monet spars with Sean without powers, to learn self-control, but she nearly strikes him and then says her powers are hers, and sheıll always use them. She unexpectedly invites Jubes to New York with her to shop in Soho. Jubes, a committed mall rat, convinces the salesgirl that Monet is a model. Monet then waits for Jubes and is approached by two girls her own age, but she has no idea how to talk with them and walks away. Jubes feels the same way, stuck at a school with no normal peer group. They commiserate over losing Ev and drink bubble tea, which Monet finds repulsive. On the subway, Jubes plays with a little kid and makes a firework, but Monet chides her for showing her power. Gunmen shoot up the car, blaming mutants for Kellyıs death (X-Men II:108). Monet thinks she can disarm them all before they fire another shot. With Jubesıs help, she takes them all out, and Monet grabs Jubes out of the way of a bullet and runs through the subway tunnel with her. Jubes has a knife cut on her arm, and Monet has the bullet she caught. She mind-wiped the civilians, a trick Emma taught her secretly. They go to meet Jono. Angelo has been experimenting with his abilities, and Sean congratulates him. Angelo tells him to hit him, then catches his hand with his extra skin and twists it behind his back. Sean calls Muir but gets Xavier, who tells him about Moiraıs death (X-Men II:108). Then he and Angelo go into Boston on business, and Sean is silent all the way. He stops at a pub and lets Angelo drink Guinness with him while he spills. He says he loved Moira, even though they never saw each other. Angelo feels the same about Tores. Sean sends Angelo out while he meets the shady contacts who are getting security equipment for him. Angelo sees Sean being dragged out, so he hotwires the humvee and follows. Sean, gagged, fights his captors, so they shoot his leg. They want the password to his handheld computer, but instead he tells them the code that locks it. They are about to kill him, when Angelo rams their car, then stretches his hand over and grabs the steering wheel, running them off the road. He uses his skin like a bola, and the bad guys flee. He rushes Sean to the hospital. Paige works out at 6am and scans the news for reports of terrorist activity. Emma observes her workaholic student, who has volunteered to stay behind today to study the new security. Later, she notices unauthorized use of Seanıs handheld. Just then the power goes out, and everything is locked down. She checks that the school isnıt under attack, then goes to get the power back on. She sees the ghosts of children in the schoolroom (with a game of hangman on the chalkboard: CA-C----- = CANCELLED, like this series). She runs, and the ghosts follow; Hannah tells her to read what she wrote about what happened to her. Paige promises not to hurt her, sees the scars on her back and wrists, and comforts her. The kids return home, and Monet deactivates the security lockdown. Paige runs out and has the driver take her to the house of Hannahıs sister, who is now an old woman. She gives her Hannahıs papers and tells her it wasnıt her fault. Paige wants the team to help environmentalists hug trees; Sean is disgusted, and Emma has investments in the oil company, so itıs a no go. Monet tells Emma thereıs a detective investigating Adrienneıs death and money; she psi-blasts the poor guy, and Monet witnesses it and, scared, tells the other kids. Jubes sees Jono has a letter from Xavierıs inviting him to join the X-Men, and sheıs thrilled for him, but Paige is frustrated at not having progressed at the school. ³We have a sadistic, murdering psychopath and a middle-aged drunk ex-spook molding our futures.² They all simultaneously decide to leave (Emmaıs work?): Paige to help the tree-huggers, Monet back home, Angelo and Jubes to L.A. They tell Sean, who wishes them the best of luck and sees them off the next morning. Paige hugs and cries over Jono; he wrote her a letter. Monet tells the others to call her, but failed to give them her number. Emma observes, and then gets on a helicopter for Xavierıs. Sean closes the school and heads for Ireland. Note: the series ends.
