X-Day 2003 - http://www.xday.info/

More on Categorization

Entries that you submit will be further organized beyond their Type Based Sub-Category, in order to further improve the fairness of X-Day.

First of all, each entry can either be a competing or a non-competing entry; competing and non-competing entries will be listed on the site separately. Competing entries are elligible to win awards, while non-competing entries can not win awards; they are listed so that people know they exist and can enjoy them. If you create more works than are allowed to compete, then you can still show them off to everyone; you start off by submitting each one in the same way, to be listed on the site, and you then set a flag for the ones you want to compete. You may change which items compete any time between when they are submitted and when the submissions period ends. Note that, during voting time, people can leave comments or ratings for all entries, even non-competitive ones; so even if an entry is inelligible to get an award, you can still see how it stacks up.

Second, entries which have won awards before may be separated from those which haven't. While there are many sources of awards that you can win, only some of them are recognized by X-Day. Generally, it is the more professional-level awards that are acceptible, where the winners are determined by a popular vote and/or professional judgement, and that have published criteria for who can win, and that have been around for several years; these also tend to happen infrequently, such as once per year. By contrast, awards which are handed out by individuals do not qualify; these by their nature tend to be more biased, and they happen frequently.

These awards were those considered in previous X-Day competitions, and so for now they also qualify for this year (the list is subject to be changed):

There is no distinction given between different versions of the X-Men continuity, whether they are the original comic books, or the Ultimate line, or the various animated series like Evolution, or whether they are the movies. All of the above go in the same sub-categories, and they do not get separated.

Largely in keeping with previous X-Day events, there is no distinction given between entries based on when they were made (although the creation date should still be marked for information's sake). You may submit anything that you ever made, regardless of whether it was made yesterday or made 10 years ago, and whether it competed in X-Day before or not.

That said, entries which won qualifying awards and have not changed significantly since then must be listed as non-competitive entries; this provides better opportunities for those who have won nothing before to win something now. Websites usually change and hence usually can compete again; it is usually fiction and art which do not compete again if they won before. You can generally just do what you consider to be fair. If you are in doubt, then make your entry competitive. If you have questions, ask the X-Day Manager.

Note that, unlike in X-Day 2002, there are no longer any 'Legacy' or 'New' sub-categories; web sites will not have extra opportunities to be voted on if they qualify for those distinctions. However, the X-Day site may allow you to see all entries grouped together which were made in the last year, or any previous year, so you know how old they are.

There is also no longer a 'Winners Circle' subcategory. Generally speaking, the fact that every entry may only be in one sub-category tends to compensate for the lack of a 'winners circle'. So even though previously winning web sites may be competing again, they tend to be matched more with their peers anyway, which levels the playing field.
