Awards

The items on this page mainly concern what happens after the Voting event period has ended.

How Award Winners Are Determined

There are two numerical ratings which a voter can give to each submission, Artistic Quality and Subject Appreciation. These numbers will be maintained separately in the final results, with an average for each appearing beside the submission when the competition ends. The Artistic Quality rating will be the only one that determines awards for a submission. The Subject Appreciation is merely for informational sake and does not count towards any award.

Generally speaking, the competing submissions with the highest average popular Artistic Quality ratings in each subcategory will win the X-Day awards.

No ratings averages or voter comment collections will be displayed to anyone until the voting period is over, and they can not be changed.

A submission must be numerically rated by at least 5 participants for Artistic Quality during the voting period to be elligible for any award, or even for the numerical average to be listed on the results page; however, all voter comments / feedback will be displayed. This takes after the IMDB.com movie ratings system, which won't even display a rating unless at least 5 people contribute to it.

There will be two main awards given in each sub-category, first-place and second-place, assuming there are at least 2 submissions in it. Beyond this, subcategories with more entries will start having more awards available to it; these additions will be semi-arbitrary, with about 7-10 extra submissions in a subcategory being needed to add another award. The number of submissions awarded can also be affected if it is difficult to choose between an apparent tie among lower ranks.

If multiple submissions have the same Artistic Quality ranking and would otherwise have gotten 1st and 2nd place, they will both tie for 1st, and no submission will get 2nd. It is likewise for a tie in any other position.

Voter rankings and comments will be displayed for each submission regardless of whether it has won an award, so it is possible for people to compare the results on that basis alone should they so choose.

Each participant may not take home more than 3 awards (sum of first-place and runner-up) in each main category, (although they probably will not be limited to 1 in the same subcategory for the same technicality reasons that we didn't limit submissions by subcategory). This is largely an effort to prevent a few good or popular contestants from cleaning house (and 3 per category is still a lot for one person), which should help make things more fair. The details of deciding which awards are taken home have yet to be decided. When an award can not be taken by a participant, it will fall to the next highest.

All participants are allowed to cite their X-Day 2003 voter ranking average numbers (between 1 and 10) on their own promotional literature, regardless of whether they win an actual X-Day award or not. This helps make things more fair when there are more submissions with high ratings than can be given awards. However, the actual first and second place awards should be considered more prestigious.

Any citations of X-Day awards or rankings that your work received (such as on an awards received page) must be accompanied by a hyperlink to the X-Day website, so people reading them can see the proof and details to your claims. You should always link to http://www.xday.info, and if the award is from a previous year, the visitors can navigate to it from there.

About Prizes

There is no guarantee of official physical prizes for the winners, although they have geen given during some past X-Days. It is possible that there will be some this year or in future years, but this hasn't been verified yet.

If there are no prizes, this shouldn't be a problem considering that even when there were supposed to be for past X-Days (they were offered prior to the staff actually knowing whether there would be any), they usually didn't materialize. What you win is the hearty congradulations of your peers, and fame. Of course, if anyone wants to individually give a physical prize to an X-Day participant, then they are welcome to do so. But I will not be arbitrating this, both out of fairness and simplicity.

This said, there may be an official plaque image that winners may get, such as in some previous years, but this has not been planned yet.
