Index to X-Men: The Hidden Years
Version 1.3, last modified August 7, 2001
by Robert Diehl (rfdiehl@yahoo.com)

Introduction:	In March, 1970, the X-Men were cancelled. For the next five
years the team made sporadic appearances in other Marvel comics (Amazing
Adventures 11-17, Hulk 150, 172, Marvel Team-Up 4, 23, Avengers 110-111, Capt.
America 172-175, Defenders 15-16), but their own book was just reprints of
earlier stories, till the relaunch with the new team in Giant-Sized X-Men 1. And
Claremontıs run began.

So, wouldnıt it be great to write canonical stories to fill in the gap? And
wouldnıt it be great to have Claremontıs partner, John Byrne, write them? It
could run for, say, 27 issues, one for each of the reprints (iss. 67-93), and it
could end with the old team being captured by Krakoa.

But, instead of seeing Scott and Jeanıs romance deepen, we saw Xavier play
with the affections of a Midwestern widow woman.

Instead of learning how Lorna and Alex became archaeologists, we watched them
fly aimlessly around Antarctica for months on end.

Instead of the story of Fred Duncanıs death, we had the battle of the circus
clowns.

Instead of sitting with Zelda at Harryıs Hideaway, we spent numberless pages
with a mute bird-lady.

Instead of seeing how Lorna got her codename, we were in a coma with her and
the Promise.

Instead of watching Hank leave to join the Brand Corporation, we spent 8
issues with the Fantastic Four and 4 with Mole Man.

It wasnıt a complete disappointment, of course. It was nice to see a young
Ororo, and the death of Warrenıs mother filled a continuity gap, and the Dark
Phoenix saga was foreshadowed nicely. But it could have been excellent.

Anyway,	Enjoy the index. Let me know if you find any mistakes.

Also,	Thanks to Peter Luzifer for observing: each cover art contains a hidden
number that would fit if the original X-Men had continued in the 70s. I may have
some wrong: this is a regular Rorschach test.

he wants to destroy the world.

Changeling took his place and was killed by Grotesk (X-Men I:42; already dying of
cancer, he wanted to redeem himself). Meanwhile, Xavier united all humanityıs
minds, channeled it through Jean, Alex, and Scott, and overwhelmed the invading
ZıNox with our alien-ness, driving them away (X-Men I:65). Reed points out that
they are still out there marauding the universe and takes them aboard his
backward-engineered Skrull spaceship. They reach the ZıNox planet and attack.
Just then the Phoenix force scans and enters Jean.
Candy enters the mansion, but G-3 stops her in the foyer. Alex, Lorna, and
Ka-Zar, having accomplished nothing in the Savage Land, come across Bobby.

stop her but canıt.
Scott shakes her: it was a vision, which quickly fades from memory. They are
still fighting the ZıNox. Hank says theyıre outnumbered, so Reed crashes into the
main base on the surface. While the others battle a monster, he takes Ben and
Hank to the main gravity drive, which reaches to the planetıs core. He wants to
shift the entire world into the distortion zone on the edge of negative space,
and Ben is the only one who can go deep enough. The ZıNox notice and activate the
drive; Hank uses Reed like a rubber band to snatch up Ben before heıs trapped.
They get away in time and congratulate themselves on tying up loose ends: the
ZıNox will have energy, but no planets to destroy.

Moira tests Jean: something happened to her in space, but thereıs no trace
now. Xavier took her to Muir while telling the boys they were in Boston, and Jean
is uneasy with the deception. Xavier says he can share secrets only with her,
since the others canıt defend against telepathy.
They return to Westchester; Cerebro detected a mutant in Illinois, near
Hankıs hometown. He and Xavier visit his mother, while Scott and Jean use Cerebro
to locate Warren. Candy shows up, saying Xavier gave her access to the mansion,
and she wants to go with them.
Alex, Lorna, and Ka-Zar zip around the Antarctic looking for Bobby, who is
still camping with Lykos. Lykos remembers being tempted to kill his girlfriend
and jumping off a cliff instead (X-Men I:61), landing on a ledge and getting to
the Savage Land. He found the remains of a German expedition on an island and
hopes to use their equipment to tap geothermal energies to feed on.
Xavier sends Hank to scout around the mutantıs unremarkable house. He finds
an old barn out back, and a Sentinel inside.
Jean makes Candy wear her green costume, to hide her identity, while she uses
her school uniform. They fly to the freighter (iss. 7) and are attacked by
telepathically shielded freaks. They fight their way below-decks and find a
feather and then Warren.
Ashley, a mutant, comes home and talks to Xavier, waiting in the front yard.

Synopsis:	Four weeks ago, Larry Trask ordered the Sentinels inherited from his
father Bolivar (X-Men I:14) to destroy all mutants. Bolivarıs friend Chalmers is
horrified and rips the medallion from Larryıs neck. Turns out Larry is a mutant
(X-Men I:58), and Bolivar made the medallion to mask him from the Sentinels, who
now turn against him.
Two weeks later, after Scott tricked the Sentinels into flying into the sun
(X-Men I:59), the fragments of five units reassemble themselves.
Now the Sentinel has got to Dunfee and captured Ashley. She scolds it for
damaging her house and tells it to release her; it obeys.
Jean, Scott, and Candy find and free Avia. Scott blasts back the shipıs
freaks till Krueger arrives; he simply waves the blast away. He knows of the
X-Men and has his own team of ³natureıs mistakes.²
Magneto, his powers partially restored by healing gasses (iss. 3), sends
Amphibius to reconnoiter; he finds Lykosıs camp.
Hank wakes and fights the Sentinel till Ashley makes it stop. Her mother
returns to the ruins of her home and has many questions.
Kreuger wonıt say where Warren is and insists Avia was being properly
punished. He mistakes Candy for Jean, which Scott hopes will help. Then he uses
his mutant power to put them all to sleep. He radios Blob and offers to sell the
X-Men, to add to his collection.
Xavier says Ashley is a mutant, and she has the Sentinel explain that it flew
randomly until it detected a mutant but broke down again before it could destroy
her. Now its original programming reactivates, and it attacks Ashley, who yells
at it, saying she doesnıt want to be friends any more, and that the 5 robots it
is made of should hate each other as much as she does. That works, and the
Sentinel violently disassembles. Hank holds back Mrs. Martin, since Ashleyıs
mutant power has manifested, and she is angry.
Bobby, running from Magneto, touches Lykos, which transforms him into Sauron.

Lykos. Alex and Lorna finally get to the same island (trying since iss. 8).
In Illinois, Ashley gets mad at Xavier for ruining her robot. Her mutant
ability is to put her life force into inanimate objects. She destroys Xavierıs
wheelchair, and Hank snatches him out of it in time.
Aboard ship, Candy frees herself. Unus and Mastermind arrive by boat to buy
the X-Men and point out that Marvel Girl isnıt Candy, who slams Krueger with a
grappling hook, but that fails to release Scott and Jean, so she runs for it, but
Mastermind traps her in an illusion of an endless staircase. He then pays Krueger
with illusory money, as he did for Warren.
Magneto climbs down a shaft and finds geothermal equipment, so he brings lava
up to power it.
Bobby is suspicious of Lykos, especially when he sees him feeding off the
energy of a baby dinosaur. They are interrupted by Magnetoıs attack, and when
Bobby touches Lykos, it triggers him to become Sauron. Alex and Lornaıs craft
goes haywire and crashes onto the island. Sauron attacks Magneto, mesmerizing him
so that he thinks heıs fighting X-Men and losing. Bobby, his memory restored,
goes to rescue Lorna and Alex. Alex is for letting Sauron and Magneto beat on
each other, but Bobby ices up to prevent Sauron from feeding on Magnetoıs energy.
Sauron mesmerizes Alex so he blasts Magneto. Lorna senses something as Magneto
uses his power, so she takes Bobby to find and destroy his antennae. Magnetoıs
power is cut off, but he has already brought lava to the surface, and the ground
melts. He offers Sauron a deal, but he wonıt serve, and Magneto falls into
boiling lava. Bobby follows but loses him and returns just in time to save Alex
and Lorna from Sauron. But he mesmerizes them all into thinking they never saw
him or Magneto, but just picked up Bobby and returned home.
Sauron has no geothermal energy to sustain himself; Amphibius reverts to
human form; Magneto crawls up from the ashes, saved by leftover healing factor

They find no one in the mansion, but Cerebro has detected a mutant in the
Himalayas.
The Brotherhood have Warren, Scott, and Candy caged in a circus; they show
them that Jean is on their side now and send them into the big top to fight wild
animals and killer clowns, with their mutant powers suppressed.

In Westchester, Bobby uses Cerebro to find the other X-Men, in Florida. He
has Alex and Lorna help him secure the mansion (damaged in iss. 7) before going
after them.
Mastermind, Scott, and Warren lose their mutant powers; Krueger has caught
them. He is angry at being paid with illusory money (iss. 12 -- Federal Reserve
notes?) and demonstrates that Blob is now a pushover. Scott and Warren realize
theyıre in a small circus tent, and they easily scare off the pathetic
roustabouts.
Krueger has Jean hostage; Candy swings down and kicks him in the head. The
police take Unus, Blob, and Mastermind and tell the X-Men to get out of town. The
freaks release Avia and the X-Menıs aircraft and go to make new lives for
themselves.
Candy tells Warren his mother is about to marry his uncle, a.k.a. the
Dazzler, who entangled his father in a scheme to conquer the world with a diamond
laser and then killed him. He also kidnapped Candy; Warren rescued her; the
Dazzler punched him in mid-air, and he dropped them, swooped to save Candy, and
assumed the Dazzler was dead (see Ka-Zar Quarterly and Marvel Tales). A little
more than kin, and less than kind (Hamlet I.2).
They fly to Westchester and pick up Bobby but refuse Alex and Lornaıs help,
which Bobby thinks was rude. Scott berates Jean for using telepathy to make
Kruegerıs freaks turn against him.
They arrive at the Worthington estate on Long Island in civilian attire and
meet Warrenıs family doctor, who is in on his secrets. They confront the Dazzler,
who has practiced his power and can fry their brains with his light. Warrenıs
mother interrupts, and everyone tries to act normal. Dr. Stuart says they canıt
tell her anything, or the shock would kill her. Frailty, thy name is woman!
(Hamlet, ibid.).

The police investigate the double-murder at the Worthingtons, but Jean

mutant.

defenses. He knocks out Avia with a karate chop.
The X-Men get to the Himalayas and get knocked out of the sky by a boulder

the yard. He tells Mrs. Martin her daughter is not brain damaged, but sheıs still
a powerful mutant.

Synopsis:	On an autumn night, Warren flies over Long Island Sound toward
Westchester, where he sees Lorna floating away. Bobby is angry with Alex for not
stopping her, but he couldnıt blast her out of the sky. Hank and Jean left Kraven
(last iss.) with a telepathic suggestion to turn himself in to the police.
Lorna knows her mind is clouded; when she lands, Carter (iss. 15) greets her.
Messenger, born mute, telepathically welcomes her.
Warren flies ahead of the Blackbird to lead the team to Lorna. Alex tries to
enter the building, but it has a telepathic shield that induces sleep, and Jean
canıt read anything inside. Then a monster attacks.
In Dunfee, Mrs. Martin questions Xavierıs methods. Her husband was killed in
action (nuclear sub in the navy).
Messenger explains: Claw formed the group to exploit their powers. After he
was defeated, Messenger took over. They put themselves in suspended animation and
emerge once a decade.
Outside, the X-Men see illusions of each other as monsters and defeat
themselves; only Alex is left standing (although Scott has always been immune to
his power). Gracie takes Lornaıs form, kisses him, and then drains him into
unconsciousness.
Messenger accuses Xavier of indoctrinating his followers, like Magneto. He
says neither oneıs vision will work, and the only resolution to the human-mutant
conflict is war, before mutants start battling each other. They want Lorna and
Alex to join them, and Lucy wants Warren, too, because heıs beautiful.
The Promise found a vast network of tunnels, and they bring Lorna down to put
her into hibernation with them.

Synopsis:	Hank faces a giant beetle and judiciously runs; Scott finds him and
blasts it. Jean and Bobby show up; they wonder if they were shrunk or transported
back in time to the age of the dinosaurs. Hank realizes theyıre in a huge
chamber; Scott finds a metal floor under the dirt; Hank says itıs ancient. Mole
Man observes them on TV monitors.
In Dunfee, Xavier is disturbed from his coziness with Teri: his telepathic
bond to his students has been broken.
Scott canıt blast through the metal, and Jean canıt sense anything. Messenger
speaks mentally, saying he was born in 1859. Mute, he learned to use his
telepathy to communicate and searched the world for mutants. They worked together
to shorten World War I but slowly aged and died off, so Messenger put himself in
suspended animation, emerging once a decade to check on things. He plans to leave
the X-Men trapped in this environment for their safety, while he returns to
hibernation with his recent recruits, including Lorna, Alex, and Warren.
Scott is able to crack the floor; Bobby uses ice to widen it, and they start
down a tunnel of machinery. Thereıs not enough humidity in the air, so Bobby
deices before he dehydrates. They enter a chamber with a giant fan, and Jean
telekinetically fights the air currents so they donıt get sucked in. She canıt
hold on, and Scott blasts the fanıs engine, but they still get sucked into a net
stretched over the fan, and then drop into a subterranean chamber. Mole Man is
there, and he attacks.
Lucy emerges from hibernation and wakes Warren; she wants his help getting
back at the people who stole her life.

heightened senses and agility by thrashing them. When Jean lifts him, he pushes a
button and reveals ³the mind-numbing glare of the Valley of Diamonds.² They are
stunned, but Bobby ices it over. Mole Man pulls a cord to open the floor, and
monsters attack.
Warren takes Lucy home to Philadelphia. Sheıs been in suspended animation for
the better part of 30 years, and her aged son is angry she deserted him and
lashes out at all mutants. They leave, and Lucy tells Warren she chose not to use
her power of suggestion on her own son. Warren asserts his will and returns to
free Alex and Lorna.
