In the old loft, he and Maddie don't notice Threnody in the shadows, but she sees them, together. In Dublin, Gauntlet interrogates the locals to find Nate, but the Irish are stubborn. Ness observes and realizes there's a sympathetic heart among them. Maddie and Nate pop right into the middle of it, and Gauntlet opens fire. Nate sends Maddie to the hospital with the wounded Mrs. MacAleer and psi-blasts ineffectively against the Gauntlet armor, while Ness and Scanlon chat. Nate negates gravity (like iss. 40), but Gauntlet was prepared for it. Just in time, Maddie ports away with him. They follow; she tries to port Barone out of his armor, but it's shielded. She gets knocked back, but cracks the armor, so Nate blasts away. In the ruins of the MacAleers' inn, Nate, Ness, and Maddie are surrounded by hordes of Gauntlet. Ness explains they are a powerful international government agency. Scanlon has been overruled by the Overreach Committee, so Vise kills him, which Fontaine feels in her head. Vise confronts her, so she uses their comm-link to get through her armor and take over her mind. Vise is a mole, she's not the only one, and they have nukes. Fontaine jams Gauntlet's comm-system, and during the chaos mind-dumps the whole story to Nate and Ness. Nate leaves Ness to guard Maddie, who ports herself away before he can dig her up. Fontaine uses Scanlon's code to order all the loyal Gauntlet to evacuate the area; she and Nate get into the command ship through the exhaust vent, shielded in a psi-bubble. He blasts the engines, crashing it onto the remaining Gauntlet and an entire Dublin neighborhood. The MacAleers are furious about the personal devastation, and Nate explodes with anguish. Threnody reads about his death in the Bugle. At the top, they find many similarly mangled corpses, both Infinite and human, and then a piece of the Atlantic sea wall, which has a generator to dampen mutant powers. Infinites jump out of the snow and attack; Nate and Scott work together to protect Jean; Jean mind-reads that the Infinites don't know how they got here, but they're setting up a cloning facility to create an army. The power is out, Jean can't telepathically find the doctor, and the road washes out. Nate, with no telepathy, can't comfort the wounded boy, and he realizes they aren't what they seem. They reveal themselves as Jahf and Modt, keepers of the M'Kraan Crystal, and attack Nate as an abomination. Nate fights back, but these two are powered by the crystal, which contains a neutron galaxy. So they get Modt to fall onto Jahf, stopping both. They came because of the dimensional rift (last 2 issues), and set up their ruse to test Nate's sense of responsibility. He passed, but Jahf still thinks he's too dangerous. Modt overrides his decision, and they port away. Nate's clothes were ruined, so Scott gives him his old X-Factor uniform, and he flies off. Threnody observes. He gets Spider-Man out, and Threnody uses her death powers on Ecco, which knocks out Violet, and Ecco scatters like shiny cockroaches. The police take Violet away. Back on the farm, Nate relaxes with Cable, Jean, and Forge. They are attacked by Sinister on a flying horse; he easily kills Jean, Forge, and Cable. Nate attacks Sinister and finds an old man behind the mask. He realizes his life in Greyville was all too good to be true: he refuses to believe, and the illusion shatters.
