She wants him back; he's not interested. Nate has awakened the Great Beasts, of Native American folklore and Alpha Flight fame. They attack, and Maddie ports away. On a secret island in the Caribbean, Ness, a witness, awakes, and goes to the Yukon to stop Nate. She ports him close to the Beasts, and he tries a new trick: he telepathically shuts off gravity, shooting them into space. Psi-Ops has a lock on Nate. They include technologically enhanced telepaths and plan to capture him, because his power is too dangerous. Ness also tracks Nate. Scientists have found a strange radioactive metal in the tundra. They are suddenly surrounded by Gauntlet, who demand they hand over Nate, but Maddie has already ported him back to Switzerland. Nate suddenly realizes that Threnody might be able to drain all the lethal energies from him. He goes into the psi-plane to locate her, but runs into Maddie, who is jealous. Ness runs an ice drill into Gauntlet and announces he's broadcasting everything, which scares them off. (He was bluffing.) He sees the radioactive metal, shasteel, and says since they touched it, they owe their lives. Maddie fights Nate, trying to make him stay, but he continues his search. Then he is felled by an overwhelming blast across the entire psi-plane (see X-Men II:77). He curses his fate, and his loss of telepathy and of Maddie, and he can't speak French, so he hops rides to England. Rick is released from the hospital, after surviving a blow from the Hulk. Still angry over his wife Betty's death, Bruce becomes the Hulk and bounds into the desert and smashes rocks. Hulk in the Grand Canyon and Nate at Stonehenge each see Thanos, consort of Mistress Death, who is trapped but can be released by ley lines, with Hulk's help. Nate comes into contact with him and winds up with the Hulk. He tries to stop him, but Hulk punches through his TK shield and throws him off. Thanos offers Hulk power, and he nearly takes it, but Nate returns with psi-armor and fights him. But Hulk was playing Thanos, who now decides to use Nate, and blasts Hulk. Nate's psi-armor begins to crack in Thanos's grip. Hulk recovers, stomps the ground to divert the river and flood Thanos. This disturbs the rock formation, freeing him. Nate sends his armor to Hulk, who punches Thanos while Nate reassembles the rocks and traps him again. Hulk loses the cool armor, and Nate plops back to Stonehenge, hungry. He knows the X-Men were involved, so he takes off over the ocean from Ireland. Maddie pops in, having reincorporated herself after the psi-plane disaster (last iss.). They squabble, and an earthquake splits the ground beneath them. Nate telekinetically stops it before it hits the village of Clifden, but the pressure diverts into an avalanche. Maddie helps him smash falling rocks, then ports them into Clifden. Tech-Gnomes follow them. They dance with the locals at the pub, but a fire breaks out. Nate does an Ororo and summons a storm, then collapses. Tech-Gnomes have caused all these disasters, to test Nate. Ness shows up, and goes with Maddie to find Nate. They are accepting of his mutant powers. Maddie refuses to port him to the X-Men to fix his telepathy. Ness has the remains of one of the Tech- Gnomes. He decides his former life is over and he is now the Witness. Blaquesmith, in shadows, catalogs the Tech- Gnome tests. A mysterious being lurks and incinerates people, so Maddie and Nate impersonate agents MacScully and O'Mulder, and find from the police that it is linked to AOA radiation. Nate, thinking he is murdering in his sleep, flies into space to kill himself, with a Phoenix effect. Maddie pops in, gives him her breath, and makes him take a breather and realize someone else from AOA is responsible. They return to Dublin to interrupt him before he kills again. He looks just like Nate, on fire. Issue: X-Man 44 Date: Nov-98 Story: Nowhere to Hide? They are all psi-blind now (see X-Men II:77), but they still have guns. Ness consults with Slaine, trying to find Nate again. Nate attacks Nemesis, who armors up and reveals himself. Maddie ports them to Pike's Peak before they get hurt, but Nate demands she return him before Nemesis kills again. She does; he uses psi-armor and illusions and tricks Nemesis into blasting all his energy skyward, where Maddie ports it away harmlessly. Nemesis disappears; he later stows aboard a ship to New York to find Dark Beast, killing en route. Nate and Maddie stay with the grateful MacAleers for a while. He awakes saying "Tramahoi", finds a Tech-Gnome causing the nightmare, and vaporizes it. In New York Slaine shows another Tech- Gnome to Ness but says the Hellbent can't identify it's technology. Manx and the Sisters appear and attack, saying they are traitors, but they beat them off. Slaine sends Ness to a Pacific island called Tramahoi, where he says the Tech-Gnomes were grown. Nate and Maddie are there first and get easily lost in the jungle. So Nate blasts away the foliage, revealing Gnome trees that reflect psi- powers, guarding a ship. The Gnomes swarm, so Nate tunnels under them and into the ship, where he finds Blaquesmith. This was all a test. Cable is unavailable, so he hopes to use Nate to stop Stryfe, who is returning. Nate refuses and tries to leave, but he and Maddie find themselves suddenly in Latveria. A pyramid has been hovering over the empty castle, and now it smashes down. Fury tells the Avengers to stay out of it. Nate realizes the pyramid is from his nightmares. Blaquesmith scurries away; a door opens; Stryfe sends his Dark Riders after the telepaths, while they are still weak (since X- Men II:77). Nate fights off Tusk and sends Maddie to Xavier's to warn them, but the mansion is deserted. Psynapse attacks Nate, scrambling his mind, and inadvertently breaking through his mental inhibitors. Psynapse is vaporized in the backlash, Nate is now glowing with his full energy. He easily sweeps aside the rest of the Dark Riders and brushes minds with Stryfe, who psychically reaches out for him and takes him captive. He plans to use the device Dr. Doom used on the Silver Surfer to tap Nate's power. Maddie goes to Anchorage, where she was once married to Scott Summers. She takes out Mainframe and Harddrive and teleports away without speaking to Jean, her original. Blaquesmith drops Cable in Latveria, where he meets Maddie. Ness arrives in Tramahoi and sees Blaquesmith. Note: the story continues in Cable 63. Cable uses the last of his energy to break away, carrying Nate. Latveria is chaos, and the people would flee, if any nation would take them. Ness slips in, to try to stop Nate before he destroys the world. Nate remembers most of this from his nightmares. Cable explains that Stryfe's pyramond focuses energy to him, so they have to attack him from outside. But the pyramond is growing, so Nate slips his molecules right through it, and Cable follows, blasting his way in. Maddie has been sapping Stryfe's power, and when Nate appears, she gives it to him. Stryfe hasn't been fooled and sucks the rest of the energy from her. Cable sends Nate to battle Stryfe while he uses his TK to keep Maddie from discorporating. Nate realizes the hard way that if he battles Stryfe, Stryfe will just suck up the psi-energy. He tells Cable to take Maddie and flee. Ness arrives and warns Nate not to blast Stryfe, or it will destroy half the world. So instead he attaches Doom's power siphon to Stryfe, creating a feedback loop. Stryfe explodes, and Nate escapes with Ness, who explains that he is the Witness. When a newspaper delivery truck wrecks, he sees Nate touted as a "faith healer", gets a mad on, and takes the sword again. Nate, floating above a rainy London, catches suicidal Colleen when she jumps off London Bridge. She's a drunk rock star wannabe runaway diagnosed as manic-depressive. When she realizes who he is, she asks him to heal her mind. He explains his telepathy is gone, but she just takes it as rejection and storms out. Nate goes to find her. Crusader publicly announces his challenge to Nate, who faces him and soon finds that mystic shields and swords are hard to beat. Crusader cuts a beam, endangering Colleen, whom Nate saves. Crusader realizes his error, his power fades, and the monks take him back. Colleen's near-death experience convinces her to live. Nate gets away with her, then gets shot down. She heals him and quickly learns to speak English, while the Hunters transform themselves into a Mega- Hunter. Maddie suggests that Ness just be honest with Nate. He says he's Hellbent, and what is she? Nate takes Sylph toward the north magnetic pole, so she can anchor herself to this earth. The Mega-Hunter catches up to them, but Nate soon takes it apart, revealing soldiers, who say Sylph is a convicted mass-murderer. She admits it, saying she did vivisections to cure a plague. They all begin to teleport back to their universe, but when Nate sees the labor camp, it shocks him away, back to our universe. Nate confronts Emma about the Dark Beast; she says he was just an acquaintance a long time ago. He's angry that she invaded his mind; she attacks him with superior psi- powers, then realizes his power. Gaia interrupts, getting them to focus on the abducted Gen X kids (Generation X 50). Emma grimly remembers the loss of the Hellions (Uncanny X-Men 281) and psi- traces her new team to Dark Beast's impenetrable underground lair. She gets Gaia to tear down the wall, and they find Gen X plugged into high-tech medical testing equipment. Dark Beast's thugs attack them; Nate bends light around himself to become invisible, and fights them while Emma frees Gen X, who join in. Nate realizes Wynter is animated by Dark Beast; Emma knew it all along and finds her way to his headquarters and is ready to kill him when Nate and Gaia interrupt. They found hatched Brood eggs, which Dark Beast had brought to earth. Emma, furious, breaks through his psi-screens, but it turns out he's not really there but just a sophisticated hologram. The base starts to self-destruct, and Nate and Gen X get out. Back at the Academy, they realize Sean is missing (Generation X 50). Emma asks Nate's forgiveness for her involvement with Dark Beast, and mentally gives him a list of his bases. Maddie pops in and takes Nate back to Ireland. Gauntlet readies to attack him again.
