She remembers X-Force helping the elder Richards get into Castle Doom to secure the time platform. They fought Doom's robots; Meltdown ran ahead of the team, and was knocked out by another robot. Dmitri is the heir to the Latverian throne, but wants to institute a democracy. Cable frees the two from Liddleville, and all go to the time platform. SHIELD intervenes, and Bridge, Cable, and Fortunov all claim the time platform. Fortunov pulls a grenade, SHIELD shoots him, the time platform activates, the castle disappears. Sunspot, Caliban, and Warpath wait as backup among the gypsies. When Sophia touches Warpath, her gift of prescience overwhelms her. Bridge considers killing Strucker and changing history; Cable (!) talks him out of it. Fortunov learns the Nazis are about to kill his grandfather and gets X-Force to fight them, warn Sabbat, and destroy Strucker's machinery. That done, they can all return to the present. Cable destroys the time platform and leaves the rest of Doom's toys for SHIELD. Richards plans to "make a deal with the devil." She tells Dani that Asgard has fallen, and gives her the "heart of the Valkyrior" to guard. (Dani was a Valkyrie, see New Mutants special ed., 1986.) Three giant hellhounds appear, swallow Brunnhilda, and leave. Dani takes a leave of absence from the MLF and contacts X-Force. They go to the Viking village in Ungava Bay, Canada (see X-Men/Alpha Flight 2, 1986), which has access to Asgard. They easily defeat some rock trolls and learn that Malekith has usurped Odin's throne. He, meanwhile, complains that though he has captured all nine Valkyries, they won't help him transport troops across the nine worlds. He sees mortals in Asgard and goes to hunt them atop a giant hellhound. Caliban fastball-specials Shatterstar up to fight him; Warpath catches a fallen Siryn; Malekith realizes Dani carries the Valkyries' secret and attacks; Cable takes the poisoned spear intended for her; he orders the team to retreat, leaving him behind to be tortured. In the forest, Kindra helps them escape through the tunnels to Jotunheim, where the dwarves have allied with the frost giants against Malekith. The Valkyries are captive in Valhalla, which only Valkyries and dead warriors are supposed to enter. Aragorn flies Dani up, with Roberto following them. They find Hela hovering over the dying Valkyries; she extinguishes Roberto's flame. Dani denies her right to take his or the Valkyries' lives, and shoots a psychic arrow, returning their spirit to them. Cable gets free and attacks Malekith; Dani she shoots an arrow into him, giving him all the pain he caused the Valkyries. They turn him over to the dwarves, to answer to Odin when he returns. The Valkyries fly them home. Note: a pin-up of X-Force follows. They go to a club, where Risque is a regular. She is recognized by Miguel, who is scared to death of her. Siryn and Shatterstar practice swordplay in the Danger Room; Siryn doesn't understand men; Caliban plays a Chopin nocturne on the piano, to everyone's amazement. Then he forgets how to play and has a seizure. Risque's employer has sent Blob and Mimic to finish her job for her. They try to capture James, but Risque helps him escape. James realizes she has some connection with the villains, but before he can get her to explain, she slips him a Mickey Finn. James wakes in a junkyard in Detroit, where Sledge says he was the one who helped Blob and Mimic, and he wants James's help. He shows him a recent photo of Whitecloud. He offers him this clue to his tribe's massacre, in exchange for a favor. Risque sends X-Force to Detroit, and are about to bust Sledge's head in when James tells them everything is okay. Risque tries to talk to him, but he feels betrayed and ends it. Domino returns from Brazil under the alias Christina Elizabeth Alioso. Bridge recognizes her and has her detained. He wants her help, stopping the government's Zero Tolerance program from compromising Dani, who he says is an undercover SHIELD agent. (Roberto is shown "powered-down" for the first time since Reignfire.) But Gryaznova knows who they are, and she locates and overpowers Shatterstar, Meltdown, and Rictor. The MLF recognize Domino, too (she ought to talk to Mystique), realize Dani betrayed them, and attack. Dani fells Wildside, and announces she is an undercover SHIELD agent. The three hostage scientists them reveal themselves as undercover Zero Tolerance Sentinels, authorized to kill all mutants. Cable thinks there's a connection between Caliban's seizures (iss. 65, 66) and the reemergence of Angel's wings (Uncanny 338), since both had been manipulated by Apocalypse. Ozymandias says it Apocalypse's way to reclaim Caliban. John tells his mother how his helicopter crashed in a storm, but he was able to rescue himself and the pilot. He doesn't realize he is a mutant. He saw a great bird in the sky (Phoenix?), which becomes his totem. His mother tells him she has cancer; her doctor says she's dying. Tabitha, her dad and step-mom are on vacation and visit a carnival. John takes James there, and Whitecloud tells him that there is something suspicious about the local cancer lab. James has his future read by Destiny. A tiger breaks out of its cage; John wrestles it down and gets an offer from Tiboldt. John and Whitecloud break into the lab; they find falsified medical records, animal and human embryos, and Martynec, who explains he is experimenting on causing mutations with radiation. He tries to take James hostage, but John kicks him, so he transmutes into a monster and fights him. James shoots him with a pistol, but to no effect. James sends Whitecloud and his brother out to call the police; Martynec explodes the lab; his body was not recovered. James survives and goes home; his mother doesn't really have cancer. Sledge explains that he had Risque seduce Warpath, so he would do him a favor: go through a dimensional portal (that he copied from Reed Richards). Forearm is angry when he learns Dani was a SHIELD agent. He leaves. (Bridge, by the way, was the one who sent X-Force to rescue Dani.) Gryaznova interrogates Domino, and we see possible bits of her back story: as a 13 year old shoplifter, a fighter in Madripoor, an NSA agent, a professional gambler, an executive in Hong Kong, and a mercenary. Gryaznova explains that Domino had defeated a Jericho droid that she had operated; the feedback put her in a coma, and she was made into a Sentinel. Her revenge involves putting Domino on an operating table. Cable sends Caliban to safety in the Morlock tunnels, while he plans to blow up the access tunnel to the X-mansion. Sledge and Risque monitor Warpath, who navigates through a confusing alternate dimension. He is greeted by an alien in the form of his boyhood cat Coyote (see iss. -1), and is led to his quarry: the Vanisher, who is telling stories to an audience of alien bunnies and is unwilling to return to earth. Gryaznova secrectly arranges for the doctors who made her a Sentinel to examine Meltdown, Rictor, and Shatterstar, who are captive in stasis tubes. Dani calls Bridge for information, knowing that SHIELD is only reluctantly cooperating with OZT. She, Siryn, and Sunspot attack Gryaznova's van, and together incapacitate her. In the Morlock tunnel, Cable retrieves Caliban, but Ozymandias intervenes, places an illusion in Cable's memory, and reclaims Caliban for Apocalypse. In an alternate dimension, Warpath is overwhelmed by the natives. Vanisher explains that all they really want is a story: the entire dimension is boring, and they have been holding him captive to entertain them. X-Force picks up Domino at a roadside diner, and Cable intercepts them in mid-flight and has them land at a safe house in the Blue Ridge. Domino says she needs to get her head back together and quits; Cable says Caliban has left, and asks Dani to rejoin. He wants to give them all new identities: to go underground until it is safe for mutants again. Shatterstar quits outright and goes with Rictor back to Mexico. The rest refuse to let Bastion make them give up their identities, so Cable realizes they can stand on their own and makes a dramatic exit. They are left with "no home, no money, and no rules." They decide to keep a low profile and not use their powers, so they bum a ride to town, where the mechanic says it'll be a day before he can get parts. When Bobby's credit card is rejected, they realize they have no funds and have to share a cheap hotel room. In a clinic in Virginia, Domino goes for a check-up to a doctor who owes her a favor. She learns that OZT has implanted a device in her skull that emits neurological "static," and it cannot be removed. In Westchester, Deadpool seeks Siryn and sees there've been some changes. James tells a bed-time story: in the alternate dimension he calmed the aliens with an Apache folk-tale, then grabbed the Vanisher and blasted away with his jet-pack. He delivered him to Sledge, who told him where to find Whitecloud. A noise: Stan and Oliver are putting Richie in their trunk. X-Force rescues him, and he offers a large sum to hire them. Theresa drives James to Nebraska and helps him catch Whitecloud, who is drunk and living as a transient. He explains that he had investigated Project: Stepladder, which involved mutagenic viruses in animals and humans. He brought his sources, DeWitt and Thorpe, to Camp Verde for safe-keeping, so the Project burned it down, killing everyone. Whitecloud has been drunk and on the run ever since. He gives James a key to a bus locker, but his head explodes (from an implant) before he can say more. The authorities investigate, and a mysterious villain is trailing Bobby. Domino opens her safety deposit box and retrieves yet another false passport. Just then, there's a stick up, and she is forced to intervene. Issue: X-Force 73 Date: Jan-98 Story: Stop Motion (23 pages) Feature Characters: Meltdown, Sunspot, Warpath, Siryn, Moonstar; Domino Regular Characters: Richie Alegria Guest Stars: Deadpool (Wade Wilson), Cannonball (Sam Guthrie, in flashback) Villains: Officers Stanton, Harl; Edwin Martynec/Martin Edwards and his Zero unit Other Characters: Det. But instead of arresting them, they use a tranquilizer gun. James catches the dart mid-air and throws it into one officer; Siryn screams at the other. Agents review tapes of Domino stopping the bank robbery (last iss.), while she sits in a cheap hotel, stitching her wounds. She decides she needs more practice, so she calls Hell House for work. Boomer writes a note to Sam, suggesting they meet at the Colossal Man gathering in Texas. The mysterious villain is still trailing Bobby, burning every place he stayed at. James and Theresa open the bus locker and find an envelope; Edwards (Dr. Martynec from iss. -1) confronts them, transforming into a monster and knocking them unconscious with the drugs on his claws. They wake in his lab, where he plans to experiment on them. He explains that Stryfe was behind Project: Stepladder. Theresa modulates her throat to burst her gag and frees James, who attacks Edwards. Theresa blasts the Zero and Edwards, but not before he injects James with amphetamines, which give him a heart attack, and he dies. Stryfe feels no guilt over Camp Verde and psi-attacks James. The team hangs out in a country-western bar in Missouri. Brunnhilde arrives to let ex-Valkyrie Dani know that James is in trouble, and she leads them to hell. Richie, left alone, is accosted by Blackshear and his thugs. Reignfire appears and incinerates the thugs, and Richie thinks its Bobby. Theresa pleads with James's corpse to revive, which gives his spirit a link to life. Blackheart tells Stryfe that his opportunity is slipping by, and X-Force arrives and does battle. Dani tries show Stryfe's greatest fear, but he fells her. Blackheart attacks Tabitha and Bobby, confronting them with awareness of their own wickedness. James rallies despite Stryfe's strongest attack and overcomes him, throwing him to the demons. A tunnel of light opens, and James leads his friends back to earth. His body revives, and he is content that Stryfe is paying for the massacre of his tribe.
