Lorna tells Guido her fears about being teamed with Alex, her erstwhile lover. Guido flirts with her. Val goes to Genosha to convince Alex to lead the new team, but fails even after standing under a falling girder. Xavier arrives with Scott, lectures Alex, and tells him Lorna will be on the team. That changes his mind, and he flies back to Washington, taking Rahne with him. Pietro gets Lockjaw to transport him down from the Blue Area of the moon, defuses a terrorist bomb, and announces his power is making him age. He joins the team, wanting help in tracking down the evil individual who did this to him. (How the postcard from the evil individual reached the moon is not elaborated.) Jamie plays a practical joke: an un-open-able mayo jar. He is hit in the gut with a shotgun blast, crashes through his window, and falls many stories to the ground. Issue: X-Factor 72 Date: Nov-91 Story: Multiple Homicide (30 pages) Feature Characters: Havok, Polaris, Strong Guy, Multiple Man, Wolfsbane, Quicksilver Regular Characters: Val Cooper, Lockjaw Guest Stars: Villains: Prof. Vic Chalker; Senator Steven Shaffran (Ricochet) and Mr. Sinister (in the shadows, last seen pulverized by Cyclops in X-Factor 39) Other Characters: reporter Ariel O'Hare, Guido's masseuse Babette Credits: Writer: Peter David Pencils: Larry Stroman Inks: Al Milgrom Letters: Michael Heisler Colors: Glynis Oliver Editor: Bob Harras Editor-in-Chief: Tom DeFalco Synopsis: Jamie's death is reported on the news. Val screams, Pietro jokes. Lockjaw ports the team to the crime scene, where they finds a dead Jamie and a live one. He is beside himself when he fails to reabsorb his dupe. He now realizes they may have their own thoughts and feelings and be real people. Chalker sees them on TV and plans the destruction of all mutants (although, with a face like that, why should he complain about green hair?) Lorna tries to get back together with Alex. Instead, they rescue a mother and child from a burning building, then they kiss, which makes Rahne jealous. Val holds a press conference announcing the disbanding of Freedom Force and the establishment of X-Factor. Guido picks the codename Strong Guy, and Jamie is accused by a man in the crowd who claims to be him. X-Force render all the Jamies unconscious, which makes all but two disappear. Guido makes an impassioned statement to the press attacking labels and prejudice against mutantkind, and makes up the term "genetically challenged." Chalker finishes building an exo-skeleton to combat mutants, but it doesn't fit him. Lorna warns Alex not to be so serious, like his brother Scott. After interrogating the Jamies, they are still unable to determine which is the original. An evil individual plans to use his "ricochet abilities" on Guido next. Guido moans Kim Basinger's name (and sleeps hanging upside down on gym equipment); Alex moans Lorna's (and Rahne wakes him); Pietro moans Crystal's (and sleeps with a teddy bear). Alex tells Lorna that Rahne has a crush on him. Val calls in Atkinson, who is her ex and a polygraph expert. He determines that Jamie #1 is the fake, so Val releases #2. Slab is on top of the Washington Monument, holding hostages and calling for Guido. Ramrod and Ruckus knock over a convenience store. Jamie #2 reabsorbs #1, leaves the team, and gets into Atkinson's car, who is really Sinister. #2 had made a deal with him, to take over the Jamies and become the primary personality. Shaffran is revealed to have the mutant power to make others screw up, and plans to use it to become president. A doctor examines a much-aged Pietro and says he is just under too much stress. Chalker has refitted his exo-skeleton, but the batteries wear down, and he is stuck inside. Alex realizes that someone has been messing with their powers, and that they released the wrong Jamie. The original Jamie reasserts himself and replaces his multiple. The Nasty Boys immediately attack him until Sinister lets him go. He thinks Jamie will attack the Senator, and tells the Nasty Boys be there for it. X-Factor also arrives, and battle ensues, up and into the capitol. Shaffran reveals himself as a mutant and flies off. Sinister reveals that he manipulated Shaffron into being revealed as an evil mutant, and that he wants Alex and Lorna to be acclaimed as heroes. He suggests Shaffron kill himself, but he shoots at Sinister, instead. He is killed by a ricochet. He emerges from the rubble, pounds the ground to release excess kinetic energy, and explains that he has been poisoned. Rhapsody breaks out of jail and flies off with Jamie. She admits killing Sharp (too much ecstasy), so Jamie and Pietro return her to prison. Val gets a doctor to prepare an antidote for Guido, but he doesn't trust it. He would rather give the crooked Shrew up rather than risk his life. So Alex drinks the same poison, putting his own life on the line, and they both drink the antidote. Coswell tries to turn a Genoshan ship away from New York harbor, but a mutant on board shames him for not welcoming immigrants and corrodes all the weapons to dust. The Brotherhood attacks and wants the Genoshans to join them. Pietro captures Toad but is felled by Phantazia. X-Factor then attacks in earnest (leaving Pietro temporarily twitching on the ground!). X-Factor split up, taking various Genoshans to the playground, a bar, the Statue of Liberty, a disco, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. At the museum, Taylor starts a cold fire sculpture, is identified as a mutant, and beaten by some locals wielding a baseball bat. Rahne weeps over him while Jamie gets an ambulance.
