Bishop shows the final battle of the Summers Rebellion (including the death of Cyclops). Then the mutant prison camp where they were raised, the day the XSE came after Virago, who tries to use young Shard as a human shield. Bishop intervenes, and Sureshot kills Virago. That is when he realized he wanted to join the XSE. In the present, Bishop asks Shard to join the X-Men, but she refuses to follow his footsteps. He shows their grandmother (evidently Storm) telling them tales of the X-Men. On her deathbed, Bishop promised to protect Shard. He feels guilty about her later death. Shard reminds him that he saved her from thugs and got her accepted to the XSE academy with him. In the Summers Rebellion, humans and mutants overthrew the Sentinels, but mutants remained outcasts. Mutant terrorists (Exhumes) spurred the formation of the XSE, mutants policing mutants, using the M tattoo now as a badge. Cowardly classmate Fitzroy and Hecat'e each give them a hard time, but they persevere. On a class trip, they are attacked by Emplates, who kill Trace and Sureshot. Bishop rallies the cadets until help arrives. Because of this, he is inducted into the XSE. In the present, Shard explains she always had to prove herself so she wouldn't be in Bishop's shadow. She reminds him about Malcolm and Randall, who fought beside him against Exhumes who destroyed the human-mutant utopian commune Harmony, killing Malcolm's brother. They later died defending Bishop (Uncanny X-Men 278). He corners Shard, but she defeats and collars him. She gets promoted and works on a prototype holographic soldier, which Bishop shows to be flawed. They fight, and Hecat'e reprimands both. Shard admits she dated the creepy Fitzroy just to bug Bishop. He is the bastard of Anthony Shaw, and when his legitimate brother William dies, there is room for him in the Hellfire Club. He quits the XSE and goes villain. Shard and Bishop later catch him, and at the trial, Shaw offers Bishop a place in the Hellfire Club. He refuses. Shaw gets Fitzroy off, who forms a group of debauched Hellions who torture humans. The XSE catch him again, and since his father won't help, he makes a deal: he tells Bishop how to find the Exhumes. Shard goes after them, without Bishop so she gets credit, and her whole team is made vampiric by Emplates. Fitzroy set them up. He knocks her out, instead, and takes her to see the Witness. He asks him to make Shard a hologram, and agrees to work for him for a year. Hecat'e is willing to just suspend him from the XSE, since information about the Witness would be useful. Bishop works with Shackle, his former classmate Shirley, who sold out to Stark/Fujikawa. He talks to the Witness, who says he is in jail and is a jail. After a year, he takes his sister's holoprojector and returns to the XSE, who send him after Fitzroy, whom he chased back through time (Uncanny X-Men 282). In the present, Shard goes off to be part of X-Factor, with Bishop's approval. They are immediately attacked by A.I.M., who claim the capsule, and S.H.I.E.L.D., who aren't sure what's going on. They get away to Mystique's safe-house in the Alps. A.I.M. discusses them: they faked their deaths in a jet crash so they could get away from X-Factor and take care of some private business. A.I.M. plans to track them through their government restraints (X-Factor 112, 120). Flashback to Jerusalem, where Mystique poses as a Mossad agent, teamed with Creed (a CIA agent at that time). They try to rendezvous with Irene, and all are captured by Catalyst. In the present, Mystique explains to Sabretooth that the capsule is a computer program called Access, created by Catalyst to unscramble satellite transmissions, and which also contains the location of Catalyst's secret base. Since Mystique and Sabretooth saw Irene kill Catalyst, all that's left to do is destroy his life's work. Then A.I.M. breaks into the safe-house. Flashback: Mystique wakes in a cell with Irene. Catalyst enters and torments them with his power to change the rates of chemical reactions, including biological ones. Unafraid, Irene predicts that hers will be the last face he sees before his death. Unimpressed, Catalyst takes her away to torture her. Mystique escapes with Creed. In the present: Mystique realizes that A.I.M. is tracking Sabretooth through his restraining collar, and she has no choice but to remove it. They jet to Catalyst's secret base on an island in the Labrador Sea, find it inhabited by Hydra, and are shot down. A.I.M. is already storming the base, and Mystique and Sabretooth separately try to get into the base. Sabretooth falls into a moat filled with piranha, and Mystique is captured by Catalyst's guards Dismember and Corrosion. Cypher blames Ritter for letting them escape in Switzerland, and kills him. They find him torturing her, Creed crashes in, and Irene kicks Catalyst into a vat of acid, dissolving him. In the present, Mystique finds herself a prisoner of Catalyst, who had been regenerated (with an uglier face) by his mutant power. He plans to complete the Access program and become Supreme Hydra. Sabretooth breaks in, a stray shot frees Mystique, and A.I.M. simultaneously takes over the bas and floods it with poisonous gas. Cypher hooks herself into the base's systems so she can process all the valuable data herself. Catalyst decides to cut and run, and Mystique follows him while Sabretooth attacks Cypher. She has had time to use the Access program to set up a nuclear attack from a US sub against Russia. Sabretooth is forced to let her escape while he rips up all nearby equipment to stop the launch. Mystique sidesteps Dismember and catches up to Catalyst. She assumes Irene's form, scaring him into falling off a ledge and into the moat. Irene's was the last face he saw before his death. Mystique tries to convince Sabretooth to put his restraining collar back on, since X-Factor is the safest place for both of them, in the light of recent anti-mutant hysteria. He refuses, but when she then tells him she has poisoned him and won't give him the antidote unless he dons the collar, he chooses to believe her. They fly back to X-Factor. On Jones Beach, Guido and Lila enjoy the sun. He doesn't fit in with X-Factor any more, but doesn't want to work for Lila. Just then, Jorkens pop in and kidnap her. They want her to port a bomb into the Kront palace. She just ports back to the beach and makes Guido come with her on tour. Meanwhile, the Jorkens decide to kidnap him and blackmail her into helping them. But they accidentally nab Kree-tor, another of Lila's guards, who is then nabbed away from them by the Kronts. Lila goes to rescue Guido, borrowing a ship to go to the Kront world. Guido takes a ship and tries to catch up with her, but crashes instead. He, Lila, and Kree-tor find themselves captives of the Kront king Ulek, who threatens to dip them in acid unless Lila helps destroy the Jorkens. Guido asks him for the time, and when he looks at his watch, he pours the acid on himself and dissolves. Guido uses the Jorken homing beacon to trick both sides into shooting all their ammo at Yordel, destroying the casus belli. Lila gets to her concert on time, and Guido agrees to rejoin her. Her next concert is interrupted by the forces of Jorken and Kront, united against her. Guido gets her into the Millennium Falcon to escape. Note: 4 puzzle pages follow. Chop Chop sneaks aboard, paralyzes them with darts, and hacks them to death slowly, while they are still conscious. In X-Factor's basement, Sabretooth tries to kill a snake, but his restraining collar stops him with high-voltage to the brain. Puck informs Kyle that his ex-girlfriend has been butchered, and he decides to catch the killer. Sabretooth has fought the Yevgrafs before and explains that they are ex-KGB assassins and now rogue psychopaths. He convinces Kyle to let him come along, as a training exercise. At the Brandt family farm, sister Leisl runs them off with a shotgun. At the scene of the crime, Sabretooth explains the whole scenario and discovers Yuri's beaten and drowned victim, while Kyle gags at the stench of blood. Sabretooth tracks the killers by scent and by beating up the locals for info. He and Kyle catch up with Yuri in a forest hideout, just as he kills his latest innocent victim. Yuri is on massive pain-killers and able to fight Sabretooth. Chop Chop shows up, and Kyle goes berzerk, but is paralyzed with darts. Leisl, having separately tracked them, shoots at both killers, but they escape. Sabretooth, badly wounded, falls over a cliff into the river, where Leisl recovers him. She plans to avenge her sister's murder. Kyle is able to move again and starts tracking. Sabretooth and Leisl find the Yevgrafs first, in an abandoned slaughterhouse. Leisl tries to shoot Yuri, but Sabretooth keeps her from that and attacks Yuri himself. He swallows some dropped pills and is able to resist his collar and break Yuri's neck. Kyle arrives and stops Chop Chop from attacking Leisl. Kyle resists the urge to beat him to death, but lets him get away. He climbs toward a skylight, but slips and impales himself on a meathook, dead. Kyle denies being bloodthirsty like Sabretooth, but Sabretooth says there is potential there, and realizes he has found a way to overcome his restraining collar. At the Hellfire Club, Annabella informs Shaw that she's joining as the Rook, and will prove herself by destroying the XSE. Seymour denounces the XSE on TV and demands a final solution to the mutant problem. Bishop and Shard investigate, to prove Randall innocent. Just then, he breaks jail. Bishop is unable to stop him joining the Fanatix. Randall, a captive, learns the Rook can grow and wear body duplicates, which is how she impersonated him. She now dons Bishop's form. They kill all the humans and destroy the statue. Rook removes her helmet, revealing Bishop's face to the TV cameras. Shaw lets Bishop know Annabella is out to destroy the XSE. Hecate sends Malcolm to apprehend Bishop, and confines Shard to monitor duty. Bishop sneaks in and asks her for information on the Knox family, then he goes to a dive bar and asks the same. Shard learns that the ancient police force SHIELD has been experimenting with organic Life Model Decoys, and that Annabella has no records. Malcolm arrests Shard, and then corners Bishop. Instead, he agrees to help him catch the Rook. The Rook impersonates Hecate, planning to kill Trask and discredit the XSE. Randall has turned Pulsar against the Rook, so when Bishop attacks to free him, the Rook kills Pulsar, phases away with Shadowbox, then kills her. The XSE pursue, finding the Rook in her lab beneath their own building (formerly owned by Jerome Knox). They destroy all the Rook's grown bodies, forcing it to return to its original. Turns out to be Jimmy Knox, a little boy. The XSE catch him and congratulate themselves.
