Yasinov and Uzbek are representatives of the Soviet government who ask them to come to Russia and teach their mutant-hunting methods. Hodge arranges a meeting with Thompson, who reveals that the Soviets are dissecting mutants in an attempt learn enough to produce a master race. Heinreich is the son of a Nazi doctor and heads this program. In a mutant prison camp within Russia, the Dynamo prevents an escape. X-Factor lands at an airport in Moscow and are attacked by Garnoff's cell. Soldiers beat them off, killing a mutant. Warren, secretly flying in on his own, is attacked by Russian helicopters and evades them. Heinreich is introduced to X-Factor and immediately realizes they are mutants. He has Bobby abducted and uses his own mutant power to mimic Bobby's shape and powers. Garnoff's cell kidnaps Bobby from his assailants and interrogates him. He reveals that X-Factor are really mutants. X-Factor, with Heinreich as Bobby, rendezvous with Warren and sneaks into the prison camp. Doppelganger and the Dynamo attack X-Factor, and Bobby leads Garnoff's cell to attack the camp. Bobby generates so much ice that floor collapses, burying Doppelganger alive, and Hank teaches him enough Russian to command the Dynamo to cease his attack. The captive mutants are freed. For their own good, Garnoff mesmerizes X-Factor, forcing them to turn Mikhail and him over to the Russian government, thus giving X-Factor an alibi. They are allowed to board their plane home. Warren buzzes the jet, and, inexplicably, Heinreich is alive and aboard the same plane. Quicksilver carried him to the moon and blew it apart. A crazed Quicksilver and Lockjaw try to abduct Franklin, but Leech inhibits their powers and catches them with the help of Power Pack and X-Factor as the X-Terminators. Scott orders Leech away, and Lockjaw teleports them to his home, Attilan, the Inhuman city in the blue area of the moon, which is also where Phoenix died. Quicksilver is distressed by this and also by seeing his daughter Luna. The Inhumans attack Quicksilver, but Lockjaw teleports away with him, Franklin, and Medusa. It is revealed that Crystal had abandoned Quicksilver and their daughter Luna for Johnny Storm, and this bothers Jean, reminding her that Scott did a similar thing for her. It is revealed that Maximus has been controlling the minds of Crystal, Quicksilver, and Lockjaw and causing Black Bolt's migraines. He plans to use Franklin's psychic powers to control all the Inhumans. The Inhumans and X-Factor attack Maximus's tower and defeat him. Quicksilver is freed and reunited with Luna. Issue: X-Factor Annual 3 Date: 1988 Story 1: Unnatural Selection (36 pages) Feature Characters: Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman Regular Characters: Ship, Arthur Maddicks Guest Stars: Emma Frost, Psylocke, Dr. Druid, Franklin Richards, Rachel Summers Villains: The High Evolutionary, Stack, Major Purge, Gatherers, Purifier troops; Apocalypse and Caliban Other Characters: Subterraneans created by the Deviants, including Moloids, Tyrannoids, Lava Men; a telepathic Subterraneans named Val-or. Purifier troops battle Subterraneans far beneath the earth. X-Factor is rebuilding the Empire State Building, damaged in issue 25. Suddenly, telepaths all over the world are interrupted by Val-or's psychic scream, which renders Jean unconscious. The Subterraneans just as suddenly become docile, allowing Stack to sterilize them so they can no longer reproduce. When Val-or is grabbed, however, he spurs all of them to renew their attack. X-Factor tunnels down to help, find tortured Subterraneans, and are attacked until Hank locates Val-or and Jean calms him down. Apocalypse objects to the High Evolutionary's interference in natural selection and is promptly attacked by him. They teleport to observe the Subterraneans. Purge captures Val-or and is stopped by him after he attacks Hank. This proves Apocalpyse's point that even genetic "dead ends" can be worthy of survival. The High Evolutionary remains unconvinced, but he teleports his troops away. Val-or remains below ground to help his people. NOTE: the original covers to issues 8 and 16 are included. Story 2: Changes! Shinsky advises Wyndham not to play with genetic mutation until the genetic code is broken. Wyndham is given information on that subject by a mysterious stranger. S'ym sends N'Astirh to steal 13 powerful babies, as a sacrifice to open a permanent portal to earth. He shows up in a cemetery, captures Bill and frees the demon within him, then sends all his demons out to find small, powerful humans. Rusty turns himself over to the navy (having gone AWOL in X-Factor 1), and has a tearful good-bye with Skids. Rictor, Boom Boom, and Skids go to Phillips Academy, where they meet many snobs. Artie and Leech are enrolled in St. Simon boarding school, where they befriend Taki, a wheelchair-bound mutant with the ability to create machines. He invents one that measures energy fluctuations, and realizes there is something strange going on. That night, demons try to kidnap Leech and Artie (thinking they qualify as babies). He realizes he can mentally reconfigure his wheelchair, and attacks the goblins with guns blazing, but fizzles out when he gets too close to Leech, and the demons make away with the pair. Their teachers call the police, and find they can't get through to New York to alert X-Factor. Taki makes his wheelchair a helicopter, flies to Phillips Academy, picks up Skids, Boom Boom, and Rictor, and jets away (fueled by Boom Boom's bombs) to the Navy prison where Rusty is being held. They break in and break him out, even though it's illegal. Issue: X-Terminators 2 Date: Nov-88 Story: Speed Demon! N'Astirh makes a deal with Hodge, granting him immortality. His servants bring Artie and Leech to him, thinking they are babies, and he yells at them for incompetence, and says they can eat the mutants after their work is complete. He is having trouble doing magic on earth; the ether is too dense. Artie is able to send a visual message that guides the X-Terminators to him in New York. But Rusty makes them stop and try to call X-Factor. To get a quarter, Boom Boom demolishes a Pepsi machine, but Taki rebuilds it. Rusty can't get through on the phone, so they head to New York, after stopping to get some clothes (courtesy Taki's trust fund) and take the name X-Terminators (after X-Factor, see X-Factor 8). The demons find baby Timmy in the 'burbs, attack his parents and kidnap him. They observe the X-Terminators and hear that Taki's computer has a spellchecker, and think that will help N'Astirh cast spells, so they pursue them. New York is hot and full of trash, and the phones still don't work. Only Taki believes they are fighting goblins, and when he follows one alone, he is kidnapped. That convinces the rest of the team, who fight off the demons but can't save Taki. N'Astirh is about to enter the computer age. Issue: X-Terminators 3 Date: Dec-88 Story: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? The X-Terminators find a map of Queens in the public library, and are attacked by demon-possessed books and the lion statues. They take the subway, and the train becomes a runaway. Rusty punches out the demonic conductor, who turns human again when unconscious, and Skids brakes the train. In the subway tunnel, they are attacked by rats. They climb up into Queens, are attacked by some bikers, defeat them, and borrow their Harleys. N'Astirh uses Artie and Leech as hostages to get Taki to make a computer for him. He plans to use magic to overthrow S'ym, who he thinks relies too much on his techno-organic abilities. Taki demands privacy, health food, and computer parts in order to work. Supplies are also provided to Leech and Artie, so they can care for the assembled infants. The X-Terminators finally get to N'Astirh's mausoleum and attack, while he forces Taki to type spells into the computer (he can't himself; demons drive make the computer short out). The demons defeat them, and the spell transports them all to Times Square. The demons fly into the sky with the babies in formation, and the next spell opens the portal to Limbo. Issue: X-Terminators 4 Date: Jan-89 Story: Finale! Demons have overrun Times Square. N'Astirh gives Artie and Leech to Crotus to eat, but Taki punches him out with his wheelchair. He gets Artie to pull the plug on the computer, which is keeping the portal open, but Crotus plugs it back in. The X-Terminators have got free and are attacked by demons. Taki creates a flying machine around them all, and blasts off into the sky to disrupt the portal. Demons follow and break the ship into individual ships; Taki is captured again. Skids pulls a baby out of the pentagram, and with the help of Leech, Rusty, and the New Mutants. The New Mutants go to free the rest of the babies, while the X-Terminators go to free Taki. N'Astirh takes control of Taki and makes him operate the computer, to create spells to attack S'ym. Taki is able to multiply the spell out of control, so that it attacks N'Astirh, as well. Rictor saves Taki from N'Astirh, who decides to let S'ym make him techno-organic, so he can absorb the computer and have its abilities himself. But Taki restrains the computer, keeping it normal, and the stress causes an explosion. The New Mutants have the babies; N'Astirh and the portal are gone. Taki is hurt, but a hero. Jean, in stasis, is being pulled through the sky to Ghaur to act as the sixth bride. Hank holding on desperately to her ankles, is able to break through to her telepathically, and they plummet to the sea. Jean is sucked underwater to the intake of a water purification system, which Attuma explodes. He takes Jean captive and orders Hank killed, but Andromeda attacks and allies with Hank. Attuma tries to rape Jean, but she repulses him, and Andromeda and Hank come to the rescue. Hank is unable to resuscitate Jean and reluctantly gives her to Ghaur, to save her life. Ghaur also steals Andromeda away before her father Attuma can kill her. Magneto attacks, and we see Doom's memories of his gypsy father's death, his vow of vengeance against uncaring humanity, and his transformation into a super-villain. Doom counter-attacks, and we see Magneto's memories of Anya's death, his vow of vengeance on uncaring humanity, and his transformation into a super-villain. Magneto ends the duel and destroys both his helmet and Alexia, who as a witness is now a threat to him. Karthon slays Naga and is almost controlled by the serpent crown, but Namor intervenes. Lemuria takes Karthon as their new ruler. Llyra, the high priestess of Set, plans to kill Karthon and become empress. Ghaur observes her. He takes a walk, incognito, along the streets of New York. He defends Synthia from a street gang, immediately falls in love with her, and is knocked out by the gang. He wakes in Synthia nearly barren apartment, and she takes him as her lover and protector. The next morning, she bites his finger, drawing blood, but he doesn't mind. He dreams of a blood-red sky, and a monster that becomes a man and hunts Synthia. He realizes she is not entirely human, but she is not forthcoming with explanations. He lives with her for days, grows weak, and is unable to contact X-Factor. He dreams of them as monsters attacking Synthia, and he defends her. He realizes he is her prisoner, and that he is dying. She finally explains that she is a cosmic being, beyond good and evil, and that her kind have been hunted down by the Dark Ones. She has been draining Hank to replenish her own energies, and she preps him to defend her for real. The Dark One arrives, and the world goes topsy-turvy. But Hank concentrates and helps Synthia overcome her foe. She thanks him and leaves him in an alley so he can return to his life. While X-Factor is playing jai alai and Scott and Jean bicker, a grown-up Franklin flies over New York City and decides that Ship doesn't belong there. He dematerializes it. The Fantastic Four explain that they were attacked by Franklin and call on X-Factor for help. Rachel attacks Franklin and is repelled. Jean meets her and refuses to believe she is her daughter. Sentinels attack Franklin atop the Chrysler building, and X-Factor and the Fantastic Four destroy them. Ahab uses his harpoon to turn Rachel back into his hound, but fails. He and his hounds battle X-Factor, the Fantastic Four, and the New Mutants beneath the Statue of Liberty. Torch and Bobby destroy Ahab's portal and reveal his machinery, which Scott destroys. Ahab and his hounds are immediately sucked to their own time. Franklin reappears and tells Scott that his son will be a powerful mutant, but he should never have been born, so he takes him away. She moved to America, married Sam, and was rejected by her aunt for marrying outside their faith. She is an example to Jean of how to have many lives and yet remain true to herself.
