A Tyrannosaurus Rex attacks, tosses Rogue, slobbers on Jubilee, and runs off after feeling Logan's claws in its hind end. Logan opens a suitcase and uses one of Forge's devices to erect a force field; another contains a geodesic dome for shelter. Rogue contacts Xavier, who reminds them they're not to confront Magneto, just to see if he's still alive (after X-Men II:3). Rogue and Logan scout; Jubilee stays and reads David Copperfield for English and listens to U2 for Irish. Logan finds mutates with captive Fall People; he realizes someone united the warring tribes. He trails them to a throne room and attacks to prevent beheadings. He sees the mutates learned teamwork somehow. Rogue still has feelings for Magneto (UXM 274). She finds one of the ancient citadels, with working machinery, and Brain Child, insane, running it. Gaza brains her, and she wakes chained to a genetic transformer, which will turn her to goo if she breaks free. A native riding a pterosaur swoops over the force field and nabs Jubilee. Logan demands to see the leader, and he appears: Sauron. Sauron knows he can't break his bones, so he slices his tendons. Jubilee nearly falls into another chasm and lands on a flying lizard, whose owner, Gronk, is angry at this ptero-jacking. A lizard crawls onto Rogue, so when she breaks her chains, it gets his by the transformation beam instead of her. It becomes a dinosaur; Rogue fells it and Gaza and then chases down Brain Child, but he has mental blocks that won't let him name his leader. Logan grabs Sauron and slashes him; he drops Logan into the chasm and has his followers throw stones to bury him. Jubilee hits Gronk in the head with a Walkman; he falls; the flying lizard reads her mind, swoops down, and catches him. The tribe adopts her as a great warrior. Logan digs himself out, but Sauron already sent for a stampede of Tyrannosaurs Rex. Rogue sees the commotion and knocks Sauron into next Tuesday but stops Logan from throwing him to the dinosaurs. They take him, unconscious, to Brian Child and tell him use his genetic transformer to make Sauron human again. But Sauron says that would be like killing him, and they should let him loose in the Savage Land, where everyone is a predator. Logan is convinced. Storm and Bishop arrive in the Blackbird to pick them up, plus the machine and a giant metal sculpture of a hand: evidence of Magneto. They already rescued Jubilee from her engagement party: the natives mistook her for a man and tried to give her a bride. They find smudges on the wall that used to be Bonebreaker, Cole, and Reese; the room where Jubilee nursed Logan after he was crucified (UXM 251); and the cybernetics tanks Spiral used to create the Reavers. Logan turns off the power and puts a wounded cyborg dog out of its misery. They look for Gateway and find his vortex still swirling, having worn a groove in space-time. Jubilee touches it and almost gets sucked into the past, the day her parents were killed. She tries to warn them and throws fireworks at their kidnappers, but Logan pulls her back, knowing you can't change the past. A damaged Sentinel activates and repairs itself. With Spiral's fluids leaking into it and without Fitzroy in charge, it looks up, sees the stars, and ponders the infinite. Jubilee always suspected the car crash wasn't an accident. She remembers the cops when she got home from the mall, saying her parents were killed. The other Lees next door wanted to adopt her, but they had such bad taste she ran away to the mall, instead. She realizes the killers mistook her parents for those Lees. The Sentinel decided to use the vortex to benefit Sentinels and purge the world of humans. Logan attacks, but it holds Jubilee hostage. Issue: Wolverine 73 Date: Sep-93 Story: The Formicary Mound! They land at the Ant Hill, where a nest of Sentinels was buried by Iron Man (Avengers 104). Logan tries to cut Jubilee free; the Sentinel blasts him down; Jubilee gets angry and explodes the Sentinel's head apart but collapses from the strain. The Sentinel wonders at the illogic of self-sacrifice but discards the puny humans and digs up the Ant Hill. It activates the Proscenium of Reality and takes the designation pi, an irrational number. It revives #2's plan to eliminate mutants (and all life on earth) with a solar flare. Jubilee drags Logan up the Ant Hill and plots vengeance on her parents' killers; Logan tells her that's ugly luggage. He scares off a pack of dingoes and gets into the Ant Hill. He and Jubilee defeat pi, but he has reactivated the others. Logan and Jubilee run and then attack the Sentinels chasing them; Jubilee's fireworks are stronger since she's learned about her parents' murderers. Sentinel 99 tries to protect 86 and is afraid as it dies; Jubilee feels compassion for it; pi puts her and Logan in a stasis field while it considers the illogic of compassion. It releases them and asks them to explain, and then retracts and destroys the solar flare generator and reconfigures the Ant Hill computers to generate algorithms to understand human behavior. The Sentinels will be dormant for 2137.23 years, and Jubilee asks pi to send them to Los Angeles. Logan confronts Sally (iss. 38-40), who directs them to Reno and Molokai. He gets them to chase him to Mullholland, where they killed Jubilee's parents, and she attacks them. She considers fireworks in the brain, but Logan dissuades her, so she just kicks them in the gonads. Magneto ripped out Logan's adamantium (X-Men II:25), and the X-Men race from the moon back to earth. Xavier and Jean enter his mind to keep him stable and see a gallery of horrors ending in a tank in the Weapon X lab. Jean says they've no right to see this, and Xavier has to sever the psi-link anyway because the Blackbird is burning in reentry. Quicksilver makes course corrections manually, faster than the computer could, and Jean uses her TK to hold the ship together. Logan wakes and refuses sedatives while his body heals. Jubilee and Shadowcat, listening via radio, are panicked, and Scott remembers the Phoenix (UXM 100-101). Xavier reenters Logan's mind and tells him not to go into the light, which is Illyana-shaped (UXM 303), and who pushes him away. Jean can't hold the hatch together and is sucked out; she holds on to the edge, and Logan senses her peril, wakes, and pulls her in. Two weeks later, he's in the Danger Room, over Moira's objections. The X-Men watch as he displays fear against battle droids, but he perseveres. Suddenly, bone claws erupt from his bloody hands, and Moira rushes him to the med lab. Moira tells Jubilee to keep Logan out of trouble. Jubilee asks Logan about her powers, newly charged with hatred (see iss. 73); he says he doesn't even understand himself, but she should stick with Xavier. His healing factor is weaker, so he can't smoke, and he flexes his claws to keep the channels open. He considers himself a liability to the team, so he leaves in the dead of night. He writes notes for everyone and leaves Jubilee his cowboy hat. Logan's healing factor and senses are weak, so he lets feral dogs track down the fox instead of putting it out of its misery himself. Other bikers check on him; dazed, he pops his bone claws, painfully, at the presumed threat and collapses. The bikers take him to the address in his pocket: Heather. Parvenue's sources alerted him to Logan W. Logan crossing the border, and he sends Deathstrike after him. Logan has nightmares of being shot as a secret agent, of being Weapon X feral in a landscape of spikes, of Mariko's skeleton, of Magneto. He wakes insisting he is more than his adamantium. Deathstrike finds the bikers in a bar and gets Logan's location. Heather uses her Alpha Flight code to access government records, finding Ferro (killed iss. 64) and Hines (killed iss. 63). He realizes from Hines' research that his healing factor needs adamantium. Puck shows up, warning of intruders, just as Deathstrike attacks. She is unexpectedly moved by this and postpones their battle till it can be honorable. She leaves with Parvenue, and when Cylla and Bloodscream show up, she doesn't stand in their way. Logan gives Heather money for repairs and heads for Buffalo Wood, Alberta. Note: a pin-up follows. Bloodscream and Cylla trail him to Heath Junction and into the wilderness, where he has the jump on them. In a blizzard, he remembers the sword was forged of meteorite and realizes it's magnetic, so he can find north. While Cylla hunts for food, Bloodscream has kidnapped an old man to drink his blood. He was apprenticed to a naval surgeon in Francis Drake's fleet. Hit by a ball, he was made undead by a heathen magician, Dagoo, whom he killed, but not before he got the recipe from him, which needs the blood of a man who doesn't age. He became a soldier, seeking such a man, and realized Patch in Madripoor was unchanged since the Normandy invasion (he was a German soldier in iss. 34). Logan almost starves but gets to the town of Logan, where his bike has been sent. Bloodscream feeds on Cylla to regain strength and attacks him. Logan cuts him down with the sword. She takes him to her office and attacks him with a sword, wanting to know how her mentor and adoptive father Chang died (iss. 6). He gives her the honor sword and tells her to analyze the blood on it (Bloodscream's, last iss., who killed Chang). Cyber forces a scholar to show him bones, from Burke and Hare, who strangled people to sell their bodies to science (to Dr. Robert Knox, in 1827). Cyber imagines Logan's bare skeleton and taking the adamantium for himself (adamantium skin not being enough). He finds and attacks Logan, offering him claws with poison or hallucinogens. Logan shows him his claws are now bone and slashes his face; Cyber catches his hand and bashes his claws off. Just in time, Culloden drops a file cabinet on Cyber and gets Logan to her racecar, heading for Muir Island. Logan drinks too much and throws up, his healing factor not what it was. Culloden shows him Munoz's work: he found secret ingots of adamantium and a tissue sample marked Logan X #23 in a Federal warehouse and thinks he understands the bonding process. He calls on the test subjects to return, especially since he found a flaw in the DNA. Cyber in the ambulance catches them in the sports car on a bridge; Logan fights him, finally using a can of gas and a flare. Culloden jumps her car onto a ferryboat, and Logan forces it to go to Muir Island. Moira sees his bone claws and says there's poison and hallucinogens in his system, so she starts dialysis and puts him in restraints. Speedboaters run into Cyber in the Firth of Forth and don't live to regret it. Culloden makes fun of Kitty and Jubilee, Logan's little girlfriends. Moira activates security, but Cyber runs the boat into the island and shuts down the electrical system. Logan, his face regenerated and bestial, goes berserk. He and Cyber fight their way into the neutralization module; Kitty grabs Logan and phases him out of the room, while Moira activates it. Logan is calm, now. Hand ninjas attack; Yukio convinces them Logan is the wrong man because he has no metal claws, so they back off. Logan goes with Yukio back to her dump (iss. 56), wanting to make things right in case he dies. They embrace. Bloodscream senses dark magic in the woods of Canada, near a nuclear facility (iss. 48). He digs through a pile of ancient skeletons and finds Elsie (iss. 53). He jumpstarts her from his truck; she says she's been dormant for 300 years, and they dig up Albert, too. Logan goes to check on his ward Amiko, an orphan girl (UXM 181). He poses as an agent of LLL, which pays her upkeep, and finds her in cramped quarters and treated like a servant, so he comes back at night, posing as a ninja, and takes her away, saying she's under protection of the Hand now. Logan has Yukio take care of her and returns the honor sword to the Silver Samurai so he will keep watch over them. It has claw marks on the door, and they found evidence that a wendigo thawed out of a chunk of ice. Logan wants to make sure Heather is happy, and he asks James, his oldest friend, to be the executor of his estate. Elsie and Albert try to tell if Bloodscream is a friendly mutant or a liar; poachers confront them and shoot Elsie and Bloodscream but are quickly defeated. Elsie wants to deliver them to the authorities, and Bloodscream plays along because he wants help finding Logan. He says Logan has an illness and he wants to help him. Simpson doesn't believe in wendigos and opens the door; a wendigo rushes in, ripping her open. The Hudsons realize it's hunting them, and Logan realizes it's not the Hunter in Darkness (iss. 34). Sverdrup tries to attack with a robotic loading suit; it kills him, gets away, and howls to its kind. The survivors barricade themselves in a freezer. They never found Logan to rescue him, and the Hunter went back to his kind. Logan, suited up, confronts the wendigos. He and the Hunter recognize each other (iss. 34); the Hunter leads the pack away. The survivors fly out. Albert senses them leave, so he locates his bomber (iss. 40) on the bottom of Hudson Bay. Logan goes back to his cabin and remembers Silver Fox (iss. 65). Cyclops and Jean are in the Blackbird over Muir Island. It is overgrown with Phalanx, which attack. They land and get out as the jet is smashed. Tabeshaw flies Logan in a low-tech plane that the Phalanx ignores. Logan parachutes down and slashes but just gets entangled, so Cyclops and Jean rescue him. Logan was summoned by Xavier (who's now in France, see X-Factor 106); the Phalanx want to absorb all the hardware and software in Moira's lab, transmitting it to Lang (in the Himalayas, see X-Force 38), who has Psylocke captive but still can't transform mutants. He isn't fully Phalanx and has a private agenda. Logan apologizes for missing the wedding (X-Men II:30); the Phalanx attack again; Cable bodyslides in and helps beat them back. He begins to realize Cyclops and Jean are Slym and Redd (the Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix LS). Xavier also called him, to team with Logan and find the main Phalanx base. First, they have to get to Moira's Cerebro to locate the other X-Men. Jean enters the Phalanx's collective mind, bringing Cable with her and teaching him how to use his psi-power, while Cyclops and Logan attack physically. The Phalanx locks onto Cable's childhood memories as his weakness; it grabs Logan to use him as a shield, but he tells Cyclops to blast anyway. Jean has Cable concentrate on a shared memory (sneaking into Apocalypse's city, Adv. of C&P 2), and they unleash their force in unison; the Phalanx reels back, and Cyclops gets to Cerebro; the Phalanx blasts Cable out of the astral plane, so he pulls a big gun; Cyclops learns the X-Men are on Everest. Moira's library starts its self-destruct sequence; Tabeshaw picks them up, Jean telekinetically holding the plane still. Cable stays behind to cover the withdrawal, but his gun has no more power, and the Phalanx tries to complete his T-O transformation, so Logan goes back to rescue him. The library explodes. Jean uses TK to catch Logan and Cable; Cable's parents dote on him, ignoring Logan. They head for Everest. Note: continued in Cable 16. Bloodscream gets Elsie to tell the time-travel story (iss. 53). Past: they arrive in the middle of a tribal war; Man-Killer Wolf guts Albert; Elsie and the Hunter help beat back his followers. Forge is there (Elsie met him in iss. 40), having come with Logan from a later future to stop the Adversary. He has control of Man-Killer Wolf, healing and super-charging him and blasting him into Forge's lodge. Logan slices; Forge shoots a ray gun; Man-Killer Wolf runs toward a waterfall, where they must follow even though it's an obvious trap. Logan makes Elsie, Albert, and the Hunter stay behind; the tribesmen, angry at all this destruction, make Albert run the gauntlet, and when he succeeds, they make him war chief. There's a temporal explosion at the waterfall. Elsie and Albert can't find Logan, so they stay with the Siksika till their batteries run down. Present: Albert senses mutants in Tibet (Cable 16), and off they go. Future: a heavily armored cyborg chases Logan, who slices him apart. Forge is glad to see he survived the Adversary: he had been thrown only ten years into the future, died, and was buried by the Indians. Albert and Elsie's head are there, a bit confused over the time paradoxes, but happy that Logan saved her pink dress. Issue: Wolverine 87 Date: Nov-94 Story: Showdown in Lowtown (22 pages) Feature Characters: Wolverine Regular Characters: Archie Corrigan, O'Donnell, Chief of Police Tai Guest Stars: Gambit (Remy LeBeau), Maverick (David North) Villains: Tyger Tiger; the Hand including Kuro Ryu, Shiro Tora; Victor Creed (in flashback) Other Characters: Rose Credits: Writer: Larry Hama Pencils: Adam Kubert Inks: Farmer, Green, Townsend, Rubinstein Letters: Pat Brousseau Colors: Marie Javins Editor: Bob Harras Editor-in-Chief: Tom DeFalco Synopsis: Logan takes Gambit to the Princess Bar in Madripoor (last seen iss. 31?); sensing an ambush, they crash through the window, only to find a surprise party. The ladies of the evening recognize Gambit. Rose bought the place from O'Donnell, having retired from LLL (UXM 257). Tyger tangos with Logan; someone finds the Hand lurking on the roof and attacks; they fall through the skylight, and Logan slices their corpses and then takes Gambit to the roof to investigate, but they can't trace their helper. Logan tells Gambit about a mission with Creed and Maverick. Creed was wounded, and Logan prevented Maverick from killing him to guard their secrets, carrying him out instead. Creed blasted a flimsy catwalk, their only route of escape, so they had to fight, and Creed won the day and Logan's respect. He still thinks Xavier's nuts to bring him into the mansion (X-Men Unlimited 3). Gambit is shot at by an energy beam; they chase their attacker, who throws smoke grenades; Logan catches him: Maverick. He attacked because he has the Legacy Virus and wanted a warrior's death. Logan: "What am I? A Viking funeral director?quot; He tells Maverick to do his job and not drop out; Maverick tells him to follow his own advice. Issue: Wolverine 88 Date: Dec-94 Story: It's D-D-Deadpool, Folks! They tussle; Deadpool points out his own healing factor works fine and stabs Logan, leaving him for dead. Copycat and Weapon X want to make a new life for themselves and are actors in the Grand Guignol. Deadpool attacks Weapon X for stealing his girl; Copycat, indignant, attacks him. Logan's healing factor is starting to work again. He picks himself up, throws on a kimono, and catches a cab to the theater. The cab loses its breaks, so Logan cuts off the door and sleds into the theater. Deadpool throws a grenade to cover his retreat. Logan helps the kids pick up and tells them to stick with the people who care about them. Ghost Rider meets him on the George Washington Bridge and says occult things are happening, but Logan won't follow him till he says, "Ogun," his former master and an evil sorcerer. They go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the guards have been killed, and Logan is shocked to find Ogun's mask on display, since he destroyed it when he killed him (Kitty Pryde and Wolverine LS). Ghost Rider says it's mystic and can't be so easily destroyed. Ogun has his sword back, too, and attacks. They fight, sword, claw, and chain, into the Temple of Dendur. Ogun tosses his sword away and faces Logan unarmed, like when he was his teacher. Logan had won then by unleashing his animal nature. Ogun had tossed the sword upwards, and Ghost Rider stops it from hitting Logan, who takes it, slices Ogun's mask in half, and disintegrates him. Ogun had been using Logan's form, attacking him via his animal nature, but Logan has learned balance. Gambit gives Creed Logan's warning. Creed smashes himself against the force field, unafraid. Issue: Wolverine 90 Date: Feb-95 Story: The Dying Game (30 pages) Feature Characters: Wolverine Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Trish Tilby Villains: Sabretooth (Victor Creed); Linus "the Heinous" Dorfmann Other Characters: NYPD including Chief Eamon X. Reilly; Dr. Sybil Survess Credits: Writer: Larry Hama Pencils: Adam Kubert Inks: Mark Farmer, Dan Green Letters: Pat Brousseau Colors: Marie Javins Editor: Bob Harras Editor-in-Chief: Tom DeFalco Synopsis: Creed watches video of police beating deranged serial-killer Linus (iss. 43), when Logan returns to the mansion, wanting to "talk." Creed throws himself at the force field but is shocked and repelled. Logan would like to kill him, but he's an X-Man. Tilby on TV accuses the police of brutality; Logan says she doesn't know what it's like to be a cop, and the police chief says Linus attacked them. A TV psychiatrist babbles. Logan is worried enough about Creed to sleep in a different room that night. He remembers what the psychologist said: Linus repeatedly punished himself, which made him immune to pain. He realizes Creed is trying the same trick, and he gets to the cell just as he breaks through the force field. Creed taunts him, threatening his women friends, till he pops a claw through his skull. The world crystallizes. Note: the Age of Apocalypse intervenes, see Weapon X 1-4.
