Cecelia has decided to be a doctor, not a hero. On the way out, she bumps into Ororo, who says she's always welcome back, and Logan, who takes her on his bike to Our Mother of Mercy hospital, South Bronx. She explains her recent absence to Gibbons, who is reluctant to have a known mutant on staff and warns her to keep things calm. Scott and Jean fly commercial to Alaska to begin their new life away from the team. They meet new neighbors, and Jean suddenly senses something homicidal on the jet. Cecelia is about to perform an appendectomy, when one of the other doctors tells the patient's parents she's a mutant, and they refuse to let her operate. Storming out, she stops for emergency surgery on a gunshot victim. The other doctors refuse to eat lunch with the homo superior, but when Pyro comes into the ER, they call her right away. He was shot during a bank robbery, and he has the Legacy Virus and can't stop burning. Cecelia removes the bullets, puts him under police guard, and makes her rounds. On the docks, Sauron breaks out of a crate sent from Antarctica. Daredevil observes and then approaches Cecelia; she mistakes him for a villain at first (horns, and all), but then treats his infected gunshot wound (see Daredevil 370-371). He advises her to be a hero, since you can save more lives that way. She continues her rounds, and Pyro tricks her into loosening his restraints. She gets fired for letting him escape, returns to Westchester, and tells Logan to stop smoking (and ignores Ororo's strangely uneven breasts). Scott is still hurting from his emergency surgery; Jean detects nothing but static on the psi-plane. A passenger starts freaking out, and Jean tells Scott to act like a civilian and let the flight attendant handle it. Warren flies to the mansion, too late to say goodbye to Scott and Jean, and too late to help with repairs. He gets the cold shoulder and leaves. A cloaked AIM ship has docked with the jet, causing turbulence. Scott keels over in pain, the anxious passenger says "they" want him back, and AIM bursts in. They demand Sibelius give them the entity, but he says it's rigged to explode if they take it. They zap him; Jean realizes she and Scott aren't the targets. Scott remembers the death of Dark Phoenix; Staci remembers having a lump in her breast; Chris remembers his mother's death; Planck remembers getting a face full of chemicals; then the psychological attack passes. Sam gets a letter from his girlfriend Meltdown, who invites him to the Colossal Man festival in Texas (see X-Force 73, 75-76). Jean sneaks her way to the cargo hold, finds the entity, and links minds: it is an other-dimensional entity with empathic powers, captured and tortured with tests. AIM orders the jet to land; the entity emits another wave of anguish, and the pilot hits AIM's craft. Scott, too weak to use his optic beam, takes out the AIM agents with the flight crew's help. The passengers panic; Jean gets the entity to help her calm them; the pilot lands in Winnipeg; the Canadian Dept. H takes the crate with the entity. Warren is guilty about abandoning the team; Betsy says life is about choices and falls off the building, forcing him to focus on her, swoop down and catch her. He resents such manipulation. In Westchester, everyone goes swimming in the pond in winter, courtesy Ororo. Logan stops an intruder who turns out to be Stone, the local school inspector: Xavier hasn't been keeping up with the paperwork. She sees the mansion and puts the school on probation. In space, Bishop is captive of Deathbird, who loves him and nurses his wounds. Joseph explodes the TV when Agee claims to be able to reverse mutations. Rogue suggests she use her power on him to access his hidden memories, but he refuses. Bobby throws a snowball at Logan, and he goes berserk. Marrow shows up and talks tough. Bobby cuts himself on something in the lake: he freezes its surface and reveals the original Blackbird (stored there since X-Men II:1). Logan is fed up with the team and considers leaving. He is attacked and cries out. The team runs to find Rogue over his unconscious body; Ororo suspects her, so she runs off, but it was Sauron, who swoops down on them. The Summerses arrive in Alaska, and Jean easily clears the snow from their driveway, making the sign of a dark phoenix on the blacktop. While Rogue runs off, upset, Sauron uses the life energy stolen from Logan to attack the team. Sam blasts into him, and Bobby and Ororo lower the temperature, since he's cold-blooded. Sauron drops Sam onto electrical wires; he blasts to keep immune but hits the ground hard. Sauron fled the doomed Savage Land, mailed himself to New York, and went on a killing spree, especially seeking mutants to drain. Rogue interrupted while he attacked Logan, and now he shoots Ororo, hypnotizes Bobby and makes him encase himself and Jubilee in ice, and tussles with Maggott. In space, Bishop admits his attraction to Deathbird, but he knows she's lying, claiming he's paralyzed and the rest of the X-Men are dead. Their craft is attacked. Rogue finds Joseph unconscious in the mansion and gives him mouth-to-mouth. Marrow sees them and thinks they're a couple. Sauron tosses Maggott to the ground; he has his slugs chew up the dirt for a soft landing, right on top of Ororo and Sam. Sauron knocks out Jubilee and stands triumphant. In the Ptarmigan Creek suburb of Anchorage, Alaska, Scott practices his optic blast on tostado shells, but he's still in pain. He is alarmed to see Jean wearing her Phoenix uniform. Logan recovers and attacks Sauron. Then Jubilee drops him with a few fireworks. The rest recover and plan to hand him over to SHIELD. Logan wants to find Rogue, but she has taken a cab into the city, to the Agee Institute. A low-flying craft knocks them over: it is Alpha Flight, here to arrest Weapon X for the murder of Madison Jeffries (Alpha Flight II:8). Rogue sees Dr. Agee. He claims to have cured his sister, a mutant, and takes an oral swab to get Rogue's DNA. Logan says Mac and Walter aren't right, mistakes Manbot for Box, and refuses to be arrested. In Alaska, Jean and Scott argue about her calling herself Phoenix. She says it's nothing to be afraid of: she's just claiming her own. The Flight attacks Logan; he says they've been duped by fake video. Heather realizes his claws aren't adamantium any more, so Dept. H has been lying again. Rogue sees the tussle and gets backup. Ororo short-circuits Heather's suit; Maggott scares Murmur to death; Rogue tries to hit Radius; Flex surrenders to Sam. Sasquatch hits Maggott with Sauron (!), Murmur tries to mesmerize him but gets nasty backlash; Rogue keeps trying to hit Radius. Sam gets everyone's attention and says Logan has an airtight alibi: the X-Men were all Bastion's captives when Jeffries was killed. Heather calls off the attack Scott leaves a message for the X-Men: he's worried about Jean. Warren is grumpy: problems with Betsy since the Crimson Dawn, plus he had to fly coach; meanwhile Bobby is literally wearing his jester's hat. Their taxi hits a blackbird, a moose, and a totem pole. Chris, a local cop, puts the moose out of his misery and gives them a ride up to Scott and Jean's. Bobby sees a strange man in the trees. Logan calls SHIELD about Sauron, and they beam him up. Chris introduces the guys to his wife, who has a good-looking, available sister. They settle in with Jean and Scott; Jean senses something outside, where blackbirds are gathering. Scott tells Hank she's been wearing her Phoenix uniform; he points out that Phoenix never really was her (a long story, ending in Fantastic Four 286, of all places). Scott is still worried, especially after the Xavier-Onslaught fiasco, and wants their oldest friends to verify that she's okay. Bobby lights a fire and toasts marshmallows, and they reminisce about the early days, and how the team is always accepting wild members, and that the new house is built on Inuit land, and that Xavier is still missing. Jean says she has pushed her limits but found no trace of him. She coughs: the chimney is blocked. Bobby shoots ice up it, and Warren sees a dead blackbird pop out. Melissa, walking the dog, sees Warren's wings. Rogue has belated suspicions about Agee. He is linked to an organization called Mutopia but he denies any wrongdoing. In Anchorage, they decide to eat out, but Inuits are protesting, claiming the land. Chulyen the Crow God lurks in the shadows. They find another restaurant, and Scott starts to make plans for the team's future, while blackbirds gather outside. Chris uses a shotgun to scare the birds off; Bobby tells him Chulyen is to blame, but Chris says super-villains don't happen in Anchorage. Agee plans to "cure" Rogue, like he did his mutant sister, which left her horribly deformed. Back home, Jean insists they must save the town, even if it blows their cover. Melissa comes knocking and sees Jean in uniform and Warren with his wings out. She's tolerant, being six-toed herself, and just wants help against the birds. In space, Deathbird's craft is damaged and falling toward a sun (conveniently labeled "SUN"). Bishop says the time for lies is over; she should free his from pretended paralysis so he can help save them. When he says he loves her, she frees him. Scott sends the team out. Bobby captures Chulyen; Hank finds polluted water; Jean and Scott rescue Chris and his deputy; Jean catches one bird that has no psi-signature. The team reassembles, each followed by thousands of birds, which make a huge form of a crow in the sky. Chulyen says it's the Crow God reclaiming the land. Jean disassembles the robot crow; Bobby ices Chulyen; Scott blasts the murder of crows, re-injuring himself. The crows dissipate, but nobody is sure why. The deputy blames mutants; Hank says it's the polluted water; the Chris says the mutants saved them all. In Alaska, the original X-Men pack to leave. But Scott says the realtor called and the sale of the house is off, probably because they were revealed as mutants. A brick is thrown through the window. Then the psi-plane explodes (X-Men II:77), leaving Jean catatonic. A Chnitt attacks Deathbird, and she shoots it through the eyes. They go across a dangerous desert to a smuggler's city with a warp gate. The Chnitt mother-ship descends to stop Karel. Bishop sends him and Deathbird to the gate, while he uses a metal-eating charge against the ship, which explodes and destroys the gate. At the last minute, Deathbird stays behind to be with Bishop. Deathbird dreams of dining with Lilandra, but instead of food, she gets a note saying "gith," which is alien vermin. A servant takes her to an infested cellar (like where she was punished as a fledgling), and she eats them with her bare hands. Lilandra has left the dining hall, but a bird is on the platter, and Deathbird picks it up. Bishop, stranded in space with her, asks if she ate the bird, but she doesn't know. She thinks it is a vision from the goddess Sharra; Bishop knows she is insane and teaches her chess. She wants to renew their romance, but he says that was a mistake. Their ship detects a probe that leads them to a jump gate. They find themselves near the moon, caught in a tow beam from a Shi'ar fleet. The year is 2018; Lilandra's daughter Alanna is Majestrix; earth is her conquered capital, Angel her consort, and Sauron her bodyguard. Deathbird attacks the first guards she sees and gets stun-gunned. Lab tests prove she is the legendary one who defeated the Phalanx (Uncanny X-Men 343-345). Bishop wakes in a cell next to Juggernaut, a demented shadow of his former self, who warns him against Alanna. Deathbird summons him, and they share a bath. Alanna's seer says she needs Deathbird's support to put down the Morlock revolt, so she offers her the planet to govern and shows her the city. She psionically assaults a protesting human; she is a mutant like her father Xavier. Cable, Vertigo (Jubilee), Longshot, and Falcon attack, capturing Bishop. Vertigo goes after Sauron for revenge, but he starts leeching her; Falcon protects her and gets killed, while Cable triggers a preset grenade. Deathbird paralyzes Longshot with toxins in her talons. Wolverine leads the revolt from beneath the city; Falcon had been using birds for espionage. Lilandra lost a revolt on her world and asked earth's heroes to mediate. While they were all in Xavier's mansion, Alanna had it blown up and took over. Doom launched probes to create jump gates and attract allies. Cable forces Vulture to get them into Alanna's celebration. But she is telepathic and jails Vulture and sends guards to find the infiltrators. Vertigo blasts through a suddenly locked door, and Bishop sets charges around the shield's power core. Alanna announces the restoration of Deathbird's birth name; she crumples the paper, saying she can't be bought and challenging Alanna to single combat. Sauron attacks, breaking Bishop's detonator, and Vertigo gets shot. Bishop shoots the charges with a machine gun and has to absorb the resulting explosion, but Sauron drains him, accidentally overloading and killing himself but saving Bishop. Deathbird defeats but holds back from killing Alanna. Bishop is proud of and kisses her. They return through the jump gate, leaving Angel temporarily in charge. Gyrich and the Brickmans observe Agee's process, highly skeptical. The nurse asks Rogue if she's having second thoughts, but she has recently touched Remy, Joseph, and Logan (iss. 349, 354, and 353), and wants more. Mystique impersonates the nurse, pulls a machine gun, and fires at Agee. Rogue goes after her, so Mystique reveals herself and says she's come to rescue her. Jean is inconsolable. Rogue goes with Mystique to her Upper West Side apartment and gets bawled out, but she insists she wants to be cured so she can have a lover and babies. Mystique says she's betraying all mutants, like she did Remy, whose form she takes. Rogue throws her down and says she abandoned him only because his voice in her head said to. She touches Mystique, since that is the only way to know the truth. Gyrich takes Agee to the Mutopia lab, where there's a backup system. Rogue, having borrowed Mystique's power, takes Mrs. Brickman's form and gets to the lab, busts up the guards, and touches Agee. She learns his experiments killed and mutilated, but now the process works. Rogue ignores both Agee and Mystique and makes up her own mind. She destroys the machine and sends Agee to care for his sister. Jean finds comfort in Scott's arms, but she'll need time to recuperate. Rogue returns to the mansion. In Westchester, Hank asks Cecelia to the opera, which Reed and Sue also attend, while Logan forces Sam and Ben forces Johnny to join in a serious poker rematch (see X-Men II:48) at the FF base on Pier 4. Beynon crashes the opera with Psychoman's emotion-stimulator. The opera singers start fighting, then the audience. Sam wins at poker and gloats. Beynon has sent his robot Hadley, disguised as Psycho-Man, to interrupt them, but they quickly defeat it. Reed sends up a "4" flare, so they rush to the opera. Reed, Sue, Cecelia, and Hank fight, while Beynon isn't even aware his machine is working, and overloads it. Ben runs his flying car into Logan's motorcycle, so they try, and fail, to hail a cab. Sam and Johnny have flown ahead and find the opera empty and wrecked. Ben forces a cab to stop, but as they're riding, the robot attacks again. Ben gets a cab over the head, but a fastball special puts the robot down for good. By the time they get to the opera, Beynon is already captured. While they argue about what to do with him, he escapes with the machine. Back in the lab, the real Psycho-Man shows up, angry. Fortunately for him, the heroes come to the rescue, but he fights them, damages his own miniaturizer, then activates it, shrinking himself and Psycho-Man down to the Microverse. They all go back to Pier 4, chat, and fall asleep playing poker. She mentions Sentinels, Onslaught, and OZT. Cerebro imitates Xavier and collects new X-Men: Grey King, a psi who can negate mutant powers; Chaos, autistic with a blast; Mercury, a mercenary who make his body metal; Rapture, a nun with wings and a sword; Crux, who runs hot and cold; Landslide, with super-strength. (Resembling Phoenix, Havok, Colossus, Angel, Iceman, and Blob, resp.) Excalibur has disbanded, so Kurt, Kitty, and Piotr are on a cruise, and they wonder where their lives would have taken them if there hadn't been a mutant problem. The false X-Men attack the ship and capture Kitty. The real X-Men are in sewers under the Pentagon, planning to meet Corbeau, but they are attacked by defense lasers. They break through and overhear that Corbeau has been abducted by the X-Men. The X-Men meet Val at the Lincoln Memorial; she says they are wanted by the Feds, especially the Benassi team. She gives them a Lear jet and a mini-TV. Kurt and Piotr go to the empty mansion. Kurt finds Marrow's detritus in his room; Piotr sees Ororo's attic is overgrown. Cecelia pulls a shotgun on them. The false X-Men want Kitty to save Cerebro, which she embraces as Xavier, then realizes something is wrong. It says it was taken by Bastion and altered, has been collecting non-viable mutants in tanks, and is dying of a computer virus. Kitty takes a look. Cecelia realizes Kurt and Piotr are good guys and says Ororo asked her to keep an eye on the mansion. She sends them to the Cape, and Kurt repairs the original Blackbird (iss. 353). Koppisch, the launch director, is shot by his own team to divert attention from the satellite, which can identify and kill mutants. Kitty captures the virus, Cerebro is healed, and the false X-Men put her in deep storage. The X-Men's jet falls apart. They expect Magneto but find the false X-Men instead. Mid-air battle ensues. Grey King turns off Marrow's power, and she is suddenly agonized by bone growths. Ororo backhands Crux with hailstones. Landslide beats on Rogue. Rapture tosses Logan down, but Kurt arrives just in time to catch him. He gets the X-Men to the Blackbird, but Grey King attacks from a distance, and Mercury shoots at them from his craft. Note: continued in X-Men II:80, and a tribute to the 35th anniversary and a pin-up of the original X-Men are included. They came to meet with Black Tom, who wants Ororo to steal a gem. Rogue flies into the mansion; Logan knows from her scent that she's been looking for Remy in Antarctica and says she can't make him come back till he wants to. Marrow has swiped Piotr's sketchbook, Kurt swipes it back, Marrow puts a bone to his throat, and Rogue yells at her. She has been living in the Danger Room, and they want her out so they can practice. Piotr mentions that Logan took his old room, so Logan decides to move out to the grounds. Piotr goes to Marrow, now in a closet, to give her a sketch of herself, but she doesn't want him to see that she collects pictures of pretty people. Juggernaut is dying. He had gone back to Korea on rumors that another gem was found, but it was a trick, and it drained power from his gem. He's still rampaging in the streets, though. Remy returns on a motorcycle and makes him drop a building, knocking himself out. Ororo berates him for being out of touch, but he says he didn't know anybody cared. He's also in town to steal the gem. Kitty introduces herself to him and finds a map in Juggernaut's pants. They partner, go to the temple, and get attacked. Kitty gets backed into a pool of piranha and phases into the chamber with the gem, while Ororo and Remy fight the animated statue that the cult wants to power with it. Remy "guards" the gem and sends Kitty back to Ororo, who realizes they've been duped. But Remy overhears her hope that he will prove himself a hero, and he gives the gem to Juggernaut. Ororo asks him to come back with them, and Kitty wants to know how he got out of Antarctica.
