She has brought Healer, who is dying on the front lawn, and says the Morlocks attacked them. Mikhail has been having nightmares and hallucinations of his comrades, whom he killed (iss. 284). Xavier rushes Callisto and Healer to the med lab, then she has him read her mind and debrief the team: in the wake of Masque's death (X-Factor 9) Healer came to Callisto, but she's living aboveground now. Morlocks burst in, angry at her for abandoning them. Mikhail somehow heard this telepathic conference and wants to aid her, another leader who has lost her flock. Ororo insists it's her sole responsibility, Warren is angry that her leadership of the Morlocks resulted in the loss of his wings (X-Factor 10). He points out they live in a mansion and usually ignore the Morlocks. Meanwhile, Healer has dragged himself over to Callisto and healed her, thereby killing himself and returning her to her natural, ugly state. Interlude: in Eden Rock Nursing Home, a nurse and an agent look at a patient, "humanity's last hope" (see iss. 313). Xavier decides to go with the X-Men, saying he can telepathically calm the Morlocks. Jean is worried that he is overcompensating for losing his legs. They go through the tunnels and find a large pile of Morlock corpses. It is an illusion: a psychic "Do Not Disturb" sign. The Morlocks are insane and destroying themselves; Xavier senses their minds are linked, deranged by Masque. Bobby is back in the mansion guarding Callisto, so she doesn't go to attack the Morlocks. Mikhail demands he release her. Ororo goes to reassert her authority (iss. 170), which she had abandoned, like she abandoned Forge. The Morlocks surround her, asking for help, and she gets claustrophobic, and brings lightning to Times Square and blasts a hole to freedom. Issue: Uncanny X-Men 292 Date: Sep-92 Story: ?the Morlocks Take Manhattan! Warren wanders off to find the altar where he was impaled (X-Factor 10). Xavier finds Brain Cell, a young telepath, and realizes he can calm the Morlocks through him. Colossus and Jean fight a Me Me, whose power is to graft other people to himself. Bishop tricks Monte into bio-blasting him, then gets surrounded by cops (investigating his murder spree, iss. 287). Bobby, now solid, transparent ice, is freaked. Mikhail says he just helped him achieve the ultimate extent of his powers. Bobby knocks him down with ice cubes, saying he's getting power-mad, and the X-Men are his friends. Mikhail shatters him. Callisto ransacks Ororo's attic and gets her vest back (iss. 170). She plans to destroy the Morlocks. Xavier drags himself hand-over-hand to Brain Cell, hiding in a corner. He snags his trousers on something, then realizes he has cut his leg badly. He sometimes loathes his legs, and wants vengeance on the Shadow King (iss. 280). Ororo calms down and sweeps the cops away from Bishop, who has opened fire. She yells at him, then flies to the Morlocks. Jean, seeing no other choice, turns off Me Me's mind, freeing his victims. Xavier gets to Brain Cell and touches him, activating the boy's telepathy and freeing the Morlocks. He comforts him, while the Morlocks retreat below ground. Mikhail has reverted Bobby to human flesh: he is still unwilling to kill. Callisto kisses him, saying she will work on that. Mikhail says he's only good at killing, and he opens gates to the East River, flooding the tunnels. Callisto slashes at Xavier while the waters rise. He punches her, but realizes he shares her anger over physical deformity. Mikhail lifts uses his power to drag her to him and explains he seeks redemption by putting the Morlocks out of their misery. Bobby arrives and traps him in ice, which he easily shatters. But this time Bobby has backup. Jean finds Warren mourning his lost wings. He tells her to back off, furious: "You have no idea what it's like to have your entire life pulled out from under you!" "Warren, please. You're talking to a woman who's been killed, cloned, and kidnapped more times that I can remember. Let's keep it in perspective." She tells him he's responsible for his actions, not Apocalypse and not his wings. Bishop charges up and attacks Mikhail; Piotr pulls him back before he gets killed. Bobby and Ororo ineffectively try to hold back the flood. Piotr tells his brother he's a coward; Warren swoops him out of the way, not trusting Mikhail. Mikhail puts the X-Men in a force bubble and ejects them from the tunnels, then waits to die. Piotr calls home to say he won't be visiting, and he has no surprise. Jean hugs him. Ororo finds all her plants dead, her last companions from Kenya. Bishop comforts her. Below the stage, terrorists plant a bomb, trying to kill Xavier. Stryfe, impersonating Cable, shoots them, wanting to kill Xavier himself. In Westchester, Scott and Jean go to Harry's Hideaway, and Scott daydreams about Betsy again. Bobby and Piotr go to the Shop Rite. Opal is taking some time to think, and Piotr is grieving over his brother. At the concert, Remy tries to comfort Ororo about her break-up with Forge, but she says he hasn't been much of a friend since he went to the Blue Team. He waltzes with her, to rock music, because that's the only step he knows. X-Factor is in the Grand Hyatt, watching the concert on TV. Multiple Man annoys Strong Guy by doing the conga with himself and rubbing it in that Lila didn't ask him to bodyguard. He annoys Quicksilver by existing. Jean telepathically yells at Scott: "?is this ability to drool whenever Psylocke enter a room some new mutant power of yours?quot; He reassures her that he loves her, and they kiss. Then Caliban bursts in. Piotr and Bobby rush to help and are attacked by Famine and War. Lila makes a short speech on tolerance and introduces Xavier, who gives a long speech on tolerance. Many in the crowd heckle him, and then Stryfe shoots him. Scott thinks he killed Apocalypse (X-Factor 68); Caliban says he has new power, enough to ignore Scott's blast and Jean's TK. He no longer snivels, and he rejects Caliban, the name Callisto gave him: he is Death, and he brings down the ceiling. Famine zaps Piotr, but he is armored, so her power feeds on herself. Piotr punches War, then the Horsemen teleport away, taking Scott and Jean. Warren flies at Stryfe, furious; he fires a few shots then bodyslides away. Xavier is wounded in the head. In their base on the Camp Verde reservation, X-Force gets their TV working and sees news of the attack. Note: continued in X-Factor 84. X-Force is detained in the Danger Room, in ugly school uniforms, and Cannonball reconsiders his leadership ability. They bicker with Jubilee, whom Strong Guy ejects. Polaris questions if they should be treating these kids like criminals. Betsy knows what it's like to have her mind and body transformed against her will, and she seems about to put Xavier out of his misery, when Moira calls a conference. Sinister told Bobby that Apocalypse has Scott and Jean; he swats him away, saying he shouldn't be so gullible. Hank sees how weak he is, but gets swatted away as well, slamming Ororo out the window with him. Jean is being held by mechanical hands; Stryfe taunts her, suggesting she did the same to him. Val tells what little they know about Stryfe: he leads the MLF, terrorists attacking genetics labs. His motives are unknown, and he may be Cable. In violation of international law, Logan has taken Bishop to Canada's Dept. K, to get information on Cable's safe houses. They fight many guards. Quicksilver, Piotr, and Warren get Apocalypse down, but his house has alien technology, which recharges him. He is still weak, so he teleports away. Havok and Remy interrogate Cannonball, wanting help finding the MLF, and offering to release them for the duration of the mission. Cable bodyslides to Dept. K, finds it already under attack, and hopes to get away quickly with information on the MLF. Then he runs into Logan and Bishop. Note: continued in X-Factor 85. The Dark Riders, newly allied to Stryfe, try to stop Scott and Jean from escaping. Jean uses their psychic rapport to stop Scott's unvisored eyes from blasting, until Tusk gets close enough. They make their way through Stryfe's huge complex, Jean extending a TK line and doing a Luke and Leia across a chasm. Stryfe observes complacently. Hank has removed the bullet from Xavier's head, but the T-O virus keeps growing. Moira has broken its binary code, but it just says, "You are smart but I am smarter," with a picture of Stryfe behind it. On Graymalkin, Cable, Bishop, and Logan review Stryfe's actions thus far: assaults on Xavier, Jean, Scott, and Apocalypse. Bishop suggests they find what links all of them. Apocalypse recovers from his battle with Stryfe and offers to save Xavier, and Warren believes he can do it. Jean and Scott come across a replica of Scott's baby (X-Factor 68). Jean senses a mind and picks him up, and Stryfe announces he is linked to his own consciousness and the complex's life support. Therefore, he is Stryfe's human shield, but on the other hand they can kill him just by killing the baby. Jean and Scott are outraged at the suggestion, but Stryfe tells Zero he knows they'll do it, because he saw them do it before. Since they can't find a way to free the baby, they decide to surrender. Stryfe has his Dark Riders shoot to kill and sets the complex on self-destruct. Stryfe is shocked to see them protect the baby and fight back: his whole life of hatred has been invalidated. He deconstructs the baby, which wasn't really alive; Scott and Jean jump and are sucked out a hole in the wall. Cable's Professor scans all of Apocalypse's bases but can't find Stryfe. Logan realizes he's not on Earth (cf. X-Factor 68). Note: continued in X-Factor 86. He uses a silent hammer gun invented by Forge; Hank says it's an example of "The Use of Genetic Advancements in Practical and Commercial Employment," the title of Warren's junior-year term paper, which he paid Hank to write, but then Xavier had him deliver the paper telepathically, showing he didn't have an original idea in his head. Hank admits he tipped off Xavier, but not till after he cashed the check. Jubilee roller blades around the mansion and falls flat on her face when she sees Xavier walking. He says he temporarily has his legs back: an after-effect of the T-O virus. He admits he misses standing, running, etc., so she offers him her blades. Remy finds Rogue on the roof of the mansion and refuses to let her brood alone. She says she has no chance at happiness because she can't be touched; she wishes Remy could, but slaps away his hand when he tries. He goes away. Jubilee takes a reluctant Xavier by the hand and gets him to blade. He starts to get the hang of it, then she pulls him into the pond with her. Warren says he wishes he could go back to the old days; Hank says Apocalypse made him blue, while he did it to himself, but they're both stronger people for it, so stop being blue. A cop interrupts them, and their image inducers automatically activate. They convince him they're contractors working overtime. Remy comes back with a blanket and hugs Rogue, saying everything's going to be fine. Promise. Jubilee and Xavier huddle in blankets; she tells him she thought he was a stiff, but sees now that "underneath it all there's, like, this vague semblance of a normal guy." Xavier rises to go back to the mansion, but his legs give out. Jubilee helps him back to his wheelchair. Issue: Uncanny X-Men 298 Date: Mar-93 Story: ?For the Children! Friedlander (see New Mutants 43, Sep-86) now works at a Catholic school in Middleborough, and Xavier has asked her to baby-sit a mutant. The Acolytes appear, and Cargill (see New Mutants Ann. 7) punches her out. Bishop and Remy train in the Danger Room: without weapons, they have to get past Warren and many holograms of Warren, and touch Jean. Obviously, Jean is trying to get the two of them to play nice. Xavier and Ororo meet Charlotte in Central Park; she is one of his informants and gives him a coroner's report. Xavier hears a primal call for help and telepathically alerts the X- Men. Corsi, driving the school bus, senses something is wrong and backs away. The school explodes, and Eric Kleinstock flies to attack the bus. Corsi shoots a hole through his belly. Unuscione picks up Corsi with her exoskeleton, and luckily for him, the X-Men arrive. The remaining Kleinstocks blast Warren with plasma; Unuscione catches Jean, but she dissolves her psionics and slams the Kleinstocks, who merge into one entity. Remy gets Cargill to chase him through the playground, where he hits her with a charged inner-tube swing. Jean says Magneto would never attack innocent children; Remy tells Cargill he never thought was a follower. Unuscione splits open the bus and uses her psychic powers to find the mutant, Teddy; she realizes he also has Down's syndrome and throws him back. Warren recovers and says the boy's family was killed by supremacists. Unuscione orders the Kleinstocks to "purify" the bus; Bishop throws off their shot, which starts a fire. Gambit tosses cards to create an energy barrier protecting the bus, while the others evacuate the children. Ororo arrives and puts out the fire with rain; the Acolytes escape. Trish reports that 14 staff were killed in the school; Kelly tours the site, says, "I told you so," and says it's a wake up call to the Mutant Menace. Forge says it survived the crash too well, so something or someone guided it. Inside, they find Magneto's empty armor, with Delgado and Anne Marie kneeling, statue-like before it. Jean takes Xavier to ABC-TV in New York: his assassination attempt (iss. 294) has upped his public image from genetics expert to mutant- rights activist, and he is on Nightline debating Kelly (chairman of the Federal Committee on Mutant Affairs) and Creed (head of the Friends of Humanity, whom they don't realize is Victor Creed's son), in the wake of the Acolyte attack (last iss.). In St. Mary's Boys Home, Warren puts Teddy to bed and chats with the Mother Superior, who is pro mutant. Xavier points out that there are good mutants as well as bad; Creed tries to blame the X-Men for Kelly's wife's death (iss. 247), but Kelly denies that and says he's not out for vengeance. He just wants to police the mutants, and Creed calls for the implementation of the Mutant Registration Act (iss. 224). Fitzroy wants to offer Creed membership in the Upstarts, which now includes Cortez, who claims to have killed Magneto. They bicker, and Gamesmaster rules that Fitzroy's secret other protÈgÈ will be the last Upstart. Whoever wins gets the service of all the others. Piotr sketches; Illyana gets out of bed to give him a valentine she made for him. He says he'll always be there to protect her. Hank joins the TV debate, with the Avengers symbol behind him. He says "Sieg Heil" to Creed and proceeds to ridicule his position, ending the debate with a raspberry. Xavier hides his face. Bobby, Bishop, Ororo, Warren, and Charlotte watch the debate at Harry's; Bishop thinks he recognizes one of the waitresses; Ororo raises a toast to fallen comrades and fallen foes, and finally to the future. Kelly realizes he agrees with much of Xavier's position. Off stage, Jean hears a telepathic voice: Kelly's aide is a mutant. Xavier is in touch with Scott and prepares to take the team to France, where the Acolytes are based. He arrives to find Forge with a large, complex gun, which he shoots, enveloping him in metal strips. Kurt proves his identity by teleporting free. Forge explains: there's a sixty-mile zone in the north of France that Cerebro can't penetrate. He has created a booster to help Xavier, and he leaves Kurt with it, refusing to help further because he no longer believes the dream. The X-Men were supposed to meet Moira on her family's estate near Paris, but it is burning. Piotr, Logan, and Bishop check and find no one among the wreckage, and Ororo blows out the fire with a hurricane wind. An angry mob of locals appears: they set the fire, and they want no mutants here (cf. iss. 200). Xavier makes Bobby and Bishop stand down, apologizes, and uses mind control to make them think the X-Men have disappeared. Logan protests, and Xavier doesn't like it, either. He thinks back to when he planned the school with Moira. He started with the original five and kept the international candidates (Ororo, Piotr, Kurt) for later. He claims to have named them X-Men after the X-factor in their genes, not himself. He knows Magnus is a threat. The Acolytes have Moira captive in the abandoned monastery Mont St. Francis, and are torturing her. Milan scans her mind, projecting her memories onto a video screen. A neophyte Acolyte, uncomfortable with Cortez's brutality, brings her a tray of food. Stevie is watching Illyana, who has a cough and a fever. Bobby tries to reassure Piotr but gets told off, since he is an only child. The X-Men had stolen files from the FAA and projected he Acolytes' plane from Middleborough back to France. They land and greet Kurt. Cortez wants to use Moira's methods (X-Men II:2) to brainwash new recruits. Moira grabs him by the ponytail and reminds him she knows he killed Magneto. He calls Voght and tells her she can have Moira's mind wiped now. Moira talks to the Neophyte, trying to convince him Cortez is a villain, but he is afraid of him and walks through the floor with his hands over his ears. Warren takes Bishop to scout ahead and congratulates him on getting Xavier to be more aggressive, attacking the Acolytes in their base. Cortez calls for the Gamesmaster, who tells him he's reaching too far. Neophyte overhears, realizes Cortez did kill Magneto, and escapes through a wall. Cortez enhances his power, propelling him through the monastery and out the other side. Xavier uses Forge's enhanced Cerebro to locate him, lying in the mud. A local woman finds Neophyte and tries to help him; Katu shoots her in the back. Cortez has denounced Neophyte as a traitor, and Senyaka catches him with his psionic whip. The X-Men arrive: Logan slices the whip, and the feedback fells Senyaka; Bobby dumps ice on Spoor; Scott zaps Katu; Xavier tells Neophyte there is a better way. Cortez has Moira brought to him, to see what effect his power will have on a flatscan. Neophyte has got the X-Men into the monastery, and they attack, rescuing Moira and destroying the computer banks that held her stolen memories. Piotr and Kurt punch and kick Javitz and Cortez; Bishop blasts the Kleinstocks; Warren hits Milan with flechettes; Unuscione crushes Warren, whom Kurt catches; Piotr throws off Unuscione's skeleton, then rescues Kurt and Warren from the Kleinstocks; Bobby goes up against Cargill, morphs his form into something stronger, and punches her out; Javitz puts his huge hands over Scott's eyes, only to get blasted; Melloncamp attacks Jean and gets psi-blasted through the ceiling. Jean takes Moira to the Blackbird for medical attention. Xavier finds Voght praying to Magneto's helmet; she teleports away. Bishop catches Cortez on a turret, waiting for teleportation, and is about to execute him when Cortez enhances his power, burning him out with his own energy, leaving him depleted. But before Cortez can kill him, Neophyte emerges from the floor and punches him, then Ororo flies Logan in, and he slices him. Neophyte is afraid the X-Men will brainwash him, but Xavier lets him go; he says Magneto and Xavier were both great, and their dreams more similar that either realized. Then X-Cutioner kills him. He tells the townsfolk that he only kills mutant murderers. Elsewhere, Jean is married with two kids and one on the way. Little Nate gets her to buy him X-Men figures in a toy store. Nimrods appear and attack him, a latent mutant. Jean knows nothing about this and grabs him; the Nimrods kill a few humans trying to get to her, and then the XSE's brother and sister team of Bishop and Shard takes out the Nimrods. The X-Men arrive, and everyone compliments Bobby, now Icemaster, who leads the team and has become a celebrity. Shard makes Bishop withdraw before he gets into a fight with Logan; while Bishop's back is turned, Fitzroy kills Shard. Bishop and Jean both feel something is wrong with this reality. Then Scott and Rachel arrive, and the kids want to go to the X-Men movie. In reality, Bobby, Jean, and Bishop have been overcome by Mastermind, who is still comatose on Muir Island. Ororo, Warren, and Piotr are trying to determine a way to free them, before Mastermind dies and takes them with him. They had come at Mastermind's request, but no one knows how he was able to write a letter. Ororo sent Bobby and Bishop to guard Jean while she spoke with him; all three were immediately attacked. In illusion: Jean and Scott sit before a roaring fire which for a moment becomes the Phoenix, but they don't know what it is. Rachel and Nathan come downstairs, complain about their parenting, and blast Scott. Jean uses TK to smash them against a wall, saying she's not actually their mother, then she scans their minds and realizes they're projections of her own insecurities. She explodes the landscape and finds Mastermind in the rubble, apologizing. Bishop also realizes he is in an illusion, and he joins Jean. Alarms sound: X-Cutioner is approaching Muir, and he is armed with a variety of pilfered weapons, and wanting to avenge the death of Fred Duncan at the hands of a mutant (?). Ororo sends Warren and Piotr to fend him off. Piotr doesn't ask questions but just knocks him off a cliff (actually, he knocks the cliff off), and Warren has to swoop down and catch him. X-Cutioner returns the favor by paralyzing him, then faces Piotr. Jean and Bishop kill the X-Men, who have turned nasty, and rescue Bobby. Jean finds and remembers Mastermind's letter, then Bishop sees a window to reality. Ororo stops X-Cutioner before he hurts Piotr; he explains he is there to kill Mastermind. Mastermind explains that he got sick (the Legacy Virus) and was sent from the asylum to Muir. He regrets his pathetic life and says his manipulation of Jean (UXM 129-137, of course) is the closest thing he ever came to love. Death approaches; Jean uses her TK to push Bishop and Bobby out into reality, but she is still stuck, so they begin CPR on Mastermind. Ororo unleashes full-force winds at X- Cutioner, then lightning. Mastermind asks Jean not to hate him and uses his last energy to push her out of his mind. He dies, alone, but having made amends, and Jean let him think she was the Phoenix. X-Cutioner has disappeared; Warren thinks Ororo incinerated him and denounces her callousness; she says she just electrified the air, and he must have teleported away. Ororo says they need to have a talk about Kamikaze (X-Factor 85), but then Warren finds Piotr, unconscious and sliced through the head and torso. Note: a preview of X-Men Anniversary follows. (He had killed him because he questioned him in public). Blaze and Benton are surrounded by cops in the New Mexico desert; he wants her to use her mutant power, but she says that'll just make things worse. Fitzroy ports in, kills Benton, and uses his energy to port in a train holding mutant prisoners from the future, including an older Blaze. The train smashes the cop cars, then ports back to the future. Fitzroy wants her to join the Upstarts: kill mutants, get big points. He knows her from the future.
