Earlier that day: she finds Logan eating fried chicken in the woods around the mansion and tells him she's a murderer (UXM 325). She blames herself for not being a better leader to the Morlocks and letting them become Gene Nation, and now she doesn't know how to make up for it. She goes downtown to find out from Cable how to perform the ceremony of light (Cable 15). She calls Forge, still unsure what she wants from their relationship. Logan suggests Xavier should talk to her, but he says he's not good at father advice. Ororo goes to the Morlock cathedral and adjusts the mirrors, seeing ghosts from her past. Cable, on the streets above, senses something's wrong and telepathically scans for her. Ororo says she's sorry, as the light fills the cathedral; then a portal opens, a hand reaches for her, and she blasts it with lightning, collapsing the ceiling. Cable goes to Westchester to tell the X-Men that Ororo is dead, and Jean confirms it telepathically, but they're still not convinced. The police have the body. Ororo finds herself on a barren world, where Mikhail Rasputin took the Morlocks (UXM 293). Issue: Storm 2 Date: Mar-96 Story: The Ghost Has No Home (21 pages) Feature Characters: Storm Regular Characters: Cyclops, Jean Grey Guest Stars: Cable Villains: Tobe, Mikhail Rasputin, Callisto; Marrow (in flashback) Other Characters: Credits: Writer: Warren Ellis Pencils: Terry Dodson Inks: Karl Story Letters: Richard Starkings & Comicraft Colors: Ariane Lenshoek Editor: Suzanne Gaffney Editor-in-Chief: Bob Harras Synopsis: Ororo realizes the landscape is one huge slope and goes uphill past poisonous lizards and dead men's bones. She begins to learn to control its atmosphere, but acid rain starts to fall, so she runs for shelter. Cable looks at Piotr's portrait of Ororo, surprised how much her death has affected him. His father talks to him, saying he's not convinced she's dead. Ororo gets angry and takes control of the weather. She comes across a steel forest and realizes it is technological, like Gene Nation's armor. She finds their huts and gets blasted by Tobe. She considers killing them all, but settles for knocking them out. She finds one and interrogates him; he says they're all trying to get uphill: survival of the fittest. Jean tells Cable about Ororo's history: born in Harlem, parents moved to Egypt and killed, Ororo trapped in the rubble with her mother's corpse, lived on the street as a pickpocket till Xavier recruited her. Ororo flies over hand-to-hand combatants to the citadel on the summit, where Mikhail says he brought her to this world to be his companion. Issue: Storm 3 Date: Apr-96 Story: The Tinderbox of a Heart (22 pages) Feature Characters: Storm Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Cable, Forge Villains: Mikhail Rasputin, Callisto, Gene Nation including Marrow (in flashback), Pain, Snow, Loss, Glass, Charm Other Characters: Credits: Writer: Warren Ellis Pencils: Terry Dodson Inks: Karl Story Letters: Richard Starkings & Comicraft Colors: Lenshoek, Hoston Editor: Suzanne Gaffney Editor-in-Chief: Bob Harras Synopsis: Cable breaks into the X-Men's communication room and calls Forge to tell him Ororo is probably dead. He had just talked to her, and thinks she wanted to break up. Mikhail looks over his subjects as they struggle to climb up the hill; he kicks one off the cliff and tells him to evolve stronger fingers. Ororo is considering his offer to help him lead Gene Nation. Rattled by recent failures, she doesn't want to make a decision without considering its long-term consequences, and she remembers an African village brought to drought by that kind of mistake. She is impaled by a dart tied to a tether: Gene Nation is trying to drag her off the citadel. She blasts them with lightning, then regrets killing them, but Mikhail says no one dies in this world except of old age, and her wound is already healed. He introduces her to Gene Nation, those who have made it into the citadel. He is sending them on a mission to destroy X-Factor's headquarters with a bomb. Ororo confronts them, and a knife fight begins, but Callisto interrupts. Suddenly, Mikhail is in pain, involuntarily opening a portal. Ororo puts a knife to his throat, demanding to be returned home; Callisto says she'll kill him if he does, like she killed Marilou to impersonate Ororo's corpse. Gene Nations says either way, they'll detonate the bomb. Issue: Storm 4 Date: May-96 Story: She Will Destroy You (22 pages) Feature Characters: Storm Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Cable, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Iceman, Wolverine, Beast Villains: Mikhail Rasputin, Callisto, Gene Nation including Pain, Snow, Loss, Glass, Charm, Marrow; Dark Beast Other Characters: Credits: Writer: Warren Ellis Pencils: Terry Dodson Inks: Karl Story Letters: Richard Starkings & Comicraft Colors: Ariane Lenshoek, Malibu Editor: Suzanne Gaffney Editor-in-Chief: Bob Harras Synopsis: Ororo orders Mikhail to teleport the entire hill. Cable goes to the ruins of the Morlock cathedral to apologize, since he never got to know her. He telekinetically lifts all the broken pieces of glass and lets the light in; Mikhail's portal is triggered and everyone comes pouring through. Ororo tells him there's a bomb, so he grabs it telekinetically, and Ororo raises a wind to blow it up to the street, where it explodes in the sky. Cable grabs Mikhail and punches him out, then tells Ororo they though she was dead. Callisto pulls a gun on them, and Ororo blasts it with lightning, and the metal shards scar her face anew. Ororo has decided not to try to be her friend, but her nightmare. She tells Cable to call the X-Men, before Gene Nation recovers and flees. He contacts Jean telepathically, waking her. Callisto runs off, and Marrow helps her: she had a second heart. Mikhail teleports himself away, despite Ororo's lightning, and Gene Nation thinks she's killed him, so they accept her leadership. The X- Men arrive, and Ororo decides to take Gene Nation to Africa, to rebuild a starved-out village. Deep in the tunnels, Dark Beast plots revenge. Mikhail had been working for him, and he planned for Nation to be his soldiers. Ororo designs a new uniform for herself and shows her navel. Issue: X-Men vs. The Brood 1 Date: Sep-96 Story: Day of Wrath Part 1 (48 pages) Feature Characters: Phoenix, Cyclops, Prof. X, Storm, Cannonball, Bishop, Wolverine, Beast, Iceman Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Villains: Brood including Hannah Connover, Josey Thomas, Fred, Nancy; Firstborn Brood Other Characters: Rev. William Connover; John and Elaine Grey, Joey and Gailyn Credits: Writer: John Ostrander Pencils: Bryan Hitch Inks: Paul Neary Letters: Richard Starkings & Comicraft Colors: Joe Rosas, Malibu Editor: Jaye Gardner Editor-in-Chief: Bob Harras Synopsis: Note: this takes place before UXM 333. Hannah dreams of the Brood empress as she is made into a queen. They use other species to lay eggs, as slaves, and for food. Hannah resists, so the empress sends the Firstborn. In a motel in Sedona, Arizona, Jean wakes, having shared the nightmare. She checks on her family, sleeping peacefully in their rooms, then goes with Scott to investigate, contacting Xavier to send the rest of the team. He briefs them first (cf. UXM 162-167). The Connovers run a religious tent show, and Hannah do healings ever since she was treated for arthritis by Josey Thomas (UXM 232-234), who implanted her with a Brood egg. She won't tell William about her nightmares, or that she implanted eggs in all those she healed. Listening to his sermon of peace, love, and righteousness, she was reconverted and won't serve the Brood any longer. Jean senses Hannah is the Queen, and that she is fighting it off. Hannah rides into town with two of her nest, who aren't aware they're Brood, while William frets about the changes he sees and prays for her. Thomas welcomes the arrival of the Firstborn, who will kill Hannah and her nest; they don't take human form, and they die when their task is done. She leads them to Hannah and outlives her usefulness, so they kill her. Hannah's nest protects her, local policemen bravely pull their guns, Scott and Jean come to the rescue, and then the rest of the X-Men arrive. Much fighting. Scott's visor and Bobby's arm get damaged; Ororo charges Bishop with lightning; Logan's claws can pierce them through the inside of the mouth; Sam charges into one and gets knocked by its tail; Hank rescues the driver of an oil truck just before it explodes. The Brood retreat for now. Logan wants to kill Hannah, but Jean says she has been able to retain her humanity, and Bishop confirms there were benign Brood in his time. Hank wants to determine why she's been able to resist; Sam suggests it's a miracle. Hannah's nest comes to protect her and attack till Hannah orders them to stop. She says it's her fault they were all infected, and the Empress will keep sending assassins till they get her, so she asks the X-Men to kill her before anyone else dies. Issue: X-Men vs. The Brood 2 Date: Oct-96 Story: Day of Wrath Part 2 (48 pages) Feature Characters: Phoenix, Cyclops, Prof. X, Storm, Cannonball, Bishop, Wolverine, Beast, Iceman; Havok (in flashback) Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Villains: Brood including Hannah Connover, Randy, Edwina, Thomas, Maryanne, Felipe; Firstborn Brood Other Characters: Rev. William Connover Credits: Writer: John Ostrander Pencils: Bryan Hitch, Sal Velluto Inks: Paul Neary, Andy Lanning, Harry Candelario Letters: Richard Starkings & Comicraft Colors: Shannon Blanchard, Tom Vincent, Malibu Cover: Carlos Pacheco, Paul Neary Editor: Jaye Gardner Editor-in-Chief: Bob Harras Synopsis: The police tell William about the X-Men protecting his wife from the Brood. He remembers the X-Men and considers them good people. He prays that Hannah will come back safe. Logan is ready to kill Hannah, but Scott says the X-Men don't kill to save life. Jean insists she can fight to keep her humanity, like Logan himself. But Hannah wants to die, and she has her nest attack so she can get away. One catches Sam around the throat, and Logan nearly goes feral, but Jean telepathically calms him, and the Brood run off to their queen. The team splits up to search for them, and pairs of them debate the wisdom of letting a Brood live. The Firstborn attack Hannah's nest in the desert, and she feels each of them die. She prays to God, and resists the Empress unto death. Logan and Jean arrive and hold off the Brood till the team reassembles. The battle is intense, and William sees the lights in the desert and goes to find his wife. Jean pushes the Brood off, then telekinetically tosses Hannah to Sam, to get her to safety. The Firstborn retreat. Jean has a plan: let Bobby freeze Hannah to stop her brain activity, and the Firstborn will think she died. Logan still thinks they should kill her. The Firstborn recognize William and capture him. Hannah gives in to her Brood nature, knocks Sam down, and runs to her husband. He sees what she has become, but she's still his wife. She protects him; he says her sins were against her will (and that Judas's betrayal wasn't a sin, ignoring John 13:2,11,27). The X-Men come to their rescue. Jean mindlinks Hank and Bobby, so he will know how to freeze Hannah. The Firstborn think she's dead, so they kill each other to complete their mission. The X-Men leave William in the desert and take the Hannah- cicle to a stasis chamber, which they send to Muir. William preaches, on faith, love, and hope. Rogue shows up and yells at him, first for breaking into Xavier's computer, then for trying to learn about Magneto. The X-Men don't want him to revert to villainy, but he asserts he's a new man, and he needs to confront his past. She lets him go. Voght observes. Joseph tracks debris through the jungle and falls into a pit. He finds a shrine containing fragments of Avalon and is blasted by a likeness of Magneto. Acolytes swarm around him, then welcome him as a mutant. They wonder if he's really Magneto. Exodus oversees the construction of New Avalon, at the North Pole. He has Voght captive: she betrayed him, since the launching of New Avalon will cause a fissure in the earth's crust. She is unrepentant, so he decides to execute her, but Cortez (last seen killed by Exodus in Avengers 369) shows up and stops him. He has repented and now pledges himself to Exodus and pleads for Voght's life. Exodus grants a stay while he considers all this. Voght tells Cortez about Joseph. In the Andes, Joseph tries to convince the Acolytes that the X-Men are right, but Humanity's Last Stand has been active in the area, and peaceful coexistence seems unrealistic. Just then their Razors attack, and Joseph is drawn into the battle, and his power convinces everyone that he is Magneto, but he refuses to lead the Acolytes, and he flees into the jungle, where he finds the remains of Magneto's quarters. He looks through recordings and is impressed and horrified. Cortez finds him there and asks for help. Joseph insists he's not Magneto, but he agrees to impersonate him. Acolytes arrive and attack him, but Joseph commands them to stop. Scanner tells him Cortez tried to kill Magneto (X-Men II:3), but Cortez talks his way out of it, convincing Joseph he just wants to stop Exodus. Armstrong has located the Acolytes in the Andes, but Trask pulls the Razors back, planning to launch missiles to kill Magneto. Armstrong disobeys orders, wanting to avenge his dead brothers (Bobby, Sam, Ethan) on Magneto himself. Voght refuses to tell Exodus where Cortez went, so he lets an alien parasite attack and lay eggs in her. Joseph offers to lead the Acolytes to New Avalon, but they convince him they have to beat off the Razors first. They do, but Armstrong takes Orator hostage. Joseph orders his Acolytes to back down, then disables Armstrong's gun and then carries him to safety. He doesn't like being Magneto, and now has to justify himself again to the Acolytes. He realizes the missiles are approaching, locked onto his bio-signature. He magnetically opens a fissure in the earth and flies into it; the missiles follow; he flies up and traps them underground, where they explode harmlessly. The Acolytes acclaim him. He merges the remains of Avalon into a transport to take them all to the North Pole. Exodus thinks he's ready for Joseph's arrival. He tells the Acolytes he's not really Magneto and renounces his crimes. He doesn't think he can convince Exodus not to launch New Avalon, but Cortez says he's their only hope. Exodus considers blasting their craft out of the sky, but there's a chance Joseph really is Magneto, so he lets them through. The base rises from the ice; a satellite overhead detects this and alerts Trask. Joseph takes charge, impressing even Exodus, and then, on Cortez's advice, kisses Voght. This shows Exodus he's a fraud, and he blasts away. They debate methods and fight, while Acolytes battle Acolytes. Cortez, who wanted them to kill each other and leave him in charge, realizes there may not be anyone left to lead. Joseph orders his team to stop fighting, and he is blasted out of New Avalon, falling through the ice and permafrost into the earth's interior. Exodus's dream is dead, and he decides to accept Cortez's explanation and execute Voght. Joseph returns to Cortez, saying Magneto's persona has returned. Joseph and Exodus ally to defend against the jets; Voght follows them, and Joseph assures her he's really Magneto now, having rejected kindness because of his failure with the Armstrong family. Trasks's pet general has data that New Avalon's launch will disrupt the atmosphere, so he wants to alert the president and the UN to get backup. Trask shoots him in the head: he wants a disaster, in order to galvanize sentiment against mutants. Joseph sends missiles back to the jet that launched them, but has misgivings about killing and turns them away. Voght realizes if he's forced to kill, it could damage his shaky psyche, so she manages to teleport herself onto one of the jets, knocks out the pilot, and tries to eject him, but the jet crashes into New Avalon. Joseph, angered, throws the rest of the missiles into space, removes the engines from the jets, and captures the pilots. They assume he's going to kill them, but he says he'll send them back to civilization. Voght tells Joseph about Magneto's family: parents and sister killed in Auschwitz, daughter burned by an arsonist, wife left him when he killed in retaliation. Joseph understands Magneto's anger and realizes he almost fell into the same trap. Joseph impersonates Magneto long enough to order the Acolytes to disband; Cortez has already escaped. A local bar is being terrorized a thug, Rocksalt, who is too big for anyone to stop. But Juggernaut is there tonight, angry that they've interrupted Patsy Cline on the jukebox, and then Rocksalt accuses him of drinking light beer. He beats him and his truck, and Alex sarcastically congratulates him. She's a gorgeous blonde with an all-body snake tattoo; he's just drunk a keg by himself; they leave together. A mysterious someone on an alternate plane observes Alex, his dead sister, and then possesses the sheriff while he investigates the damage. Alex leads Juggernaut on a rampage through the town, avenging petty wrongs. The townsfolk come to him and ask to be killed, strangely suicidal. Alex senses her brother in the steel mill, so she tells Juggernaut a sob story and gets him to defend her. Black Tom shows up, no longer merged with wood (Generation X 25). He hits Juggernaut over the head, saying he can't leave him alone for a minute, then blasts Alex, revealing her to be Spite (X-Men Unlimited 13), then he continues to insult Juggernaut's stupidity till he slaps him, accidentally impaling him on his shillelagh (predicted in X-Men Unlimited 12). Juggernaut is distraught, then turns against Spite, till Tom reveals himself to be D'Spayre. D'Spayre and Spite both feed on the emotions of human misery, and he is feeding on Juggernaut, the vessel of Cyttorak. He looses his demons on the town. Juggernaut tries to fight him, although Spite says he's using his own power against him, and winds up submerged in molten steel. He rises, and he and Spite attack D'Spayre but are quickly defeated. She bemoans the fact that her brother always wins; that strikes a chord in Juggernaut, who confronts D'Spayre again, only to get the sum of all his life's worst moment thrown at him. Juggernaut says he always deals with despair by getting mad. Rage and hate feed him, even though he's reduced to bare skeleton, and Spite uses his distraction to drain Cyttorak's power from her brother. She does the honorable thing and returns it to Juggernaut, filling out his body again. She flies away, and the townsfolk throw a party to thank Juggernaut, which goes well until they offer him light beer.
