X-Men, X-Force, and New Warriors have teamed up to stop AIM from recreating Proteus (iss. 128). Muir Island is out of contact, so they race there. The residents are there, but under control of the Shadow King, so Moira tries to shoot down Cannonball and Firestar when they fly recon. The New Warriors clear a landing area, then Siryn attacks, along with Multiple Man, Polaris, Legion, and Moira with a big gun, but they surrender when X-Force shows up. Harness has the bloated Piecemeal in Edinburgh, sucking up more energy. Police try to stop them, but Harness fells them all and takes Piecemeal to the castle. Cable briefs Moira on AIM's and Genetech's efforts to recreate Proteus; she says she knew it was possible but wanted her son to rest in peace. Moira relates how he had burnt out all his host bodies, including his father, and was dispersed by Piotr's metal. WHO alerts them to the activity in Edinburgh. In Switzerland, Gideon and Toad discuss their plots and play chess. The teams race to Edinburgh and attack Harness; Shatterstar opens with his force blast, but his armaments take down him, Siryn, and Feral. Moira leads part of the team to deal with Piecemeal, who is in agony. She forces Legion to create TK shields around each of them, and Marvel Boy a dome above them, filled with Speedball's energy. Multiple Men hold Piecemeal still; Firestar emits a high-frequency microwave to disrupt the Proteus energies, which she absorbs with a dampener. Harness finally goes down; Warpath punches her facemask to pieces, revealing a woman, Piecemeal's mother. There's too much energy; Legion drops his shields, so everyone has to flee; Piecemeal explodes, and the resulting being calls himself Piecemeal and Proteus. Note: continued in X-Factor Annual 6. They battle: Aminedi's cutting wind slices Blob's leg; Pyro's fire holds off Black Raazer's demons; Avalanche creates a fissure to separate the teams, and Kurzmann falls next to Freedom Force, which run to hide in a restaurant. Arabian Knight spots them; he is helping Desert Sword because they hold his children hostage. They attack and recapture Kurtzmann, then tell Freedom Force to surrender. Blob reminds Pyro of their orders, so he flash fires and kills Kurtzmann. Avalanche and the Commando make it to the airport, but it is now a minefield, and they are blown up. In the X-Men's old base in Australia, Sentinels attack the Reavers. The X-Men Gold Team attends a Hellfire Club ball in New York and is treated rudely by the Hellions. Frost crashes in, having stopped one in a series of assassins. Shinobi luxuriates in his penthouse with Fitzroy. Each has Sentinels at their disposal and are jockeying for position in the Upstarts by killing for points. Shinobi already killed his father (X-Factor 67), and Fitzroy says he sent the Sentinels to kill the Reavers and Frost. Frost tries to force open the assassin's mind, and the backlash hurts Jean. Ororo tries to stop her; Bevatron attacks; melee ensues, but Jean telepathically stuns everyone. The X-Men are there because Frost proposed an alliance against a mutual threat. Ororo demands more information, but Frost refuses and wants to continue her interrogation of the assassin. Just then Fitzroy appears, in force field armor, and kills Jetstream. In Australia, Pierce rushes to get to Gateway; Lady Deathstrike damages a Sentinel, but this model can repair itself. Pierce makes it through a sandstorm to Gateway, wakes him, and tells him to transport him to whomever is responsible for this attack. Some of the Sentinels make it through the portal after him. Fitzroy shoots Beef through the wall, and he falls to the street below. Frost suggests the remaining mutants defend themselves, but Fitzroy presses a button and becomes invisible. He pops up behind Ororo, who blasts him with a hurricane. Jean telekinetically locks his suit's circuitry, but before Frost can probe his mind, a portal opens and Pierce comes through. Pierce blames Frost for the Sentinels, which attack them both. Fitzroy orders them to attack the X-Men and the Hellions. Piotr, Tarot, and Jean are quickly put down, and Fitzroy is satisfied and leaves. The X-Men gather in the street, where Kelly berates them for endangering the innocent. He hesitates when he realizes Jean is dead. Xavier says Jean isn't dead, but she's in another body. Fitzroy goes to Shinobi's penthouse, bearing Frost's body and Pierce's head. He claims victory, but Shinobi is unwilling to concede his father's ring. So Fitzroy cuts his finger off. Forge has recovered some data from the Sentinel's head and locates their base on an iceberg. A time portal opens in Fitzroy's base, but the people are fused together, and Fitzroy absorbs their life energies. Fitzroy chews out Bantam, who was supposed to stop such intrusions. Xavier takes Cerebro to the Arctic and explains to the X-Men that Jean put her mind into Frost's dead body. He is surprised he didn't sense Frost's own death. Fitzroy kills Tarot and uses her life energy to open a portal, getting allies Burke, Kroeger, and Stylles from another time. Kroeger refuses to fulfill the bargain, however, and Fitzroy pretends to release him, but when he tries to go back through the portal, it kills him. Jean in Frost's body uses her telekinesis to free herself. Xavier immediately senses her and sends the X-Men to her aid. Ororo blasts through the base's shields, and the X-Men easily take out Fitzroy's forces. Then he sends in the Sentinels, but the X-Men have a strategy: Warren and Piotr smash them, then Bobby freezes the damage before they can repair themselves. Fitzroy absorbs the remaining Hellions and opens a wide portal. Future evil mutants stream forth. Then Bishop and friends come through and attack Fitzroy. Bishop orders a termination sweep, and the mutants flee in terror, each using an image inducer to look like Fitzroy and provide cover for him. Ororo realizes these people are all from a horrific possible future (Days of Future Past, iss. 141-142), and that Bishop wears the X. He absorbs energy and blasts; Piotr smashes him, saying X-Men don't let people get killed. Fitzroy gets away, only to be caught by Shinobi's men. Bishop doesn't believe these are really the legendary X-Men, so he puts a restraining cuff on Piotr, forcing him back to human form. Ororo blasts Bishop, but he just absorbs it; Bobby ices him; he blasts Bobby's ice sled. Warren catches him and shoots metal feathers; Bishop's men shoot at them; Ororo whips up a hurricane and finishes it. Xavier returns Jean's mind to her own body. Shinobi reclaims his father's ring from Fitzroy. He appeals to the Gamesmaster, who rules in favor of Shinobi. Shinobi sets off bombs to destroy Fitzroy's base, and Bishop uses the distraction to get away from the X-Men, whom Ororo lifts up to the Blackbird. He is reluctant to help the Russians, who dispute the island with Japan, but they need to work together to investigate an anomaly in a large pit. He collects power and blasts, but just gets pushed away, and something emerges. Piotr has a broken nose, and Jean is back from the dead again, having transferred her mind into Frost's body. Ororo wonders if Frost might have done the same, and Xavier and Jean begin to scan for her mind, but Forge interrupts with a distress call from Japan. Sunfire and the Russian army fall before alien invaders from the pit. The X-Men arrive and save Sunfire from death, but Warren is quickly felled, and Jean is stymied by how alien their minds are. Piotr drops down from the Blackbird, and Sunfire has to fly him out of the way, but the aliens decide to regroup. Forge shoots concussive missiles to knock them out, and they sacrifice themselves to protect the pit. The Primate's armor explodes, revealing a girl within. She warns them it is too late, and the pit implodes, sucking all down into it. Forge and Xavier, in the Blackbird, fear the black hole will destroy the world. On the other side of the world, Bishop and his men kill three criminals from his time who had resisted arrest after a spree of pillage and rape. He and Jean are taken in honor to a nearby city. Ororo wakes in an alien desert, where a hermit takes her in. When she explains she arrived via a portal, he gets angry, saying her world will be sucked into his, and they start across the desert to fix it. Warren descends into a skirmish and is mistaken for the Angel of Death but then attacked. His wings kill everyone in sight, while he is unconscious. He wakes, acclaimed by the rebels, and is taken to their leader Sha- Har-a-Zath, who names him Protector General, against his will. Bobby and Sunfire crash through the roof of Tooker's pub, angering him. But Bobby quickly defeats his bouncers. They hear a town crier announce a warrior of steel and realize it's Piotr. Piotr is surrounded by pretty girls; Jean interrupts, saying they need to look for their friends. Ororo arrives, and the hermit reveals himself to be Piotr's brother Mikhail. Tilby reports on Bishop's handiwork. The locals are blaming the X-Men for a mutant gang war. Issue: Uncanny X-Men 286 Date: Mar-92 Story: Close Call! He had been a cosmonaut, but when his government discovered he was a mutant, they faked his death (see iss. 99, Jun-76), then sent him to Sakhalin to investigate the anomaly. He was pulled in; his crew was killed; the Avatar's people rescued him, and he married his daughter Tra-Mai-a-Zath. Then he discovered the graveyard of ships that fell through the portal, and that his crew was killed by the Avatar. He raised rebellion and used his powers to try to close the portal, killing everyone around him, friend, foe, and spouse. Piotr tells him he's not to blame. Xavier and Forge fly in the Blackbird above the portal, which has swallowed the island. The best scientists are unable to find a timely solution. Piotr, angered at his brother's self-defeat, armors up and stalks away. Ororo explains that Piotr idealized Mikhail after his supposed death, and the truth has disappointed him. Warren, disoriented by Sha-Har-a-Zath's kiss, watches as his wings kill the Posse Comitatus, in what was supposed to be a training session. She wants revenge on Mikhail, who killed her family. The rebels attack the portal and Warren's team. He fells Jean, who tells him to fight the mind control. When Sunfire nearly melts his wings off, he snaps out of it. Piotr takes the blast of a neutronic cannon, and Mikhail finally reveals himself, just as the void begins to grow. He realizes that to close it now will destroy the alien world, but that would at least save Earth. Mikhail extends his power; Sunfire, Bobby, and Jean lend their skills to open a stable window home, and a small piece of island appears below the Blackbird. Piotr does CPR on his brother and saves his life: he wants him to live to meet Illyana. Jean confirms that the energy was dispersed safely, and the aliens have survived. Issue: Uncanny X-Men 287 Date: Apr-92 Story: Bishop to King's Five! Randall and Malcolm are killed in the line of duty. That gets the X-Men's attention, and they put Bishop down before he can kill Stygut in retaliation, thereby letting the criminal escape. Bishop passes out, still determined to capture him, and then Fitzroy, a spoiled brat with an influential father. While chasing down Fitzroy in the future, they (will have) stumbled across the long- disused X-mansion subbasements, with a recording of Jean being attacked. She says: "Alex?! Cable? anyone?! ? don't even know ? transmission being received? ? taken total ? taken totally unaware! Both teams ? and ? decimated! Mansion security was deactivated ? activated? activated? from within! ? betrayed by one of our own! ? Professor Xavier ? was the first to die. ? only one left ? power's negated. Our own fault, really ? should never have trusted? we knew so little about? You?! ? may have killed the X-Men? but the dream will never?! ?Die?quot; (cf. Onslaught: X-Men, Aug-96). After dropping Fitzroy at the maximum security Pool, Bishop went to visit the last person to see the X-Men alive: LeBeau, the Witness, for whom he had once worked. He demands to know who betrayed the X-Men but gets no answer. Fitzroy, meanwhile, had drained the life force of a rat, ported out of his cell, and started draining guards. He releases the prisoners, including Bantam, who acts as his anchor when he ports. Bishop, Randall, and Malcolm follow them through a huge portal and find themselves in the 20th Century (iss. 282). Bishop wakes in the X-Men's med lab, has a telepathic interview with Xavier, and joins the team, to the surprise of the other X-Men. Scott starts to lecture them, but Warren tells him to relax, then asks him if Betsy is gorgeous. Scott stammers, then goes to debrief Xavier about Omega Red (X-Men II:5-7). Jean overhears. Xavier has Ororo training Bishop in the Danger Room. He shakes Scott's hand, in awe of being among his heroes, and asks Ororo to take him to New York so he can acclimatize to his new environment. Bobby drops in on Opal; Warren has a message from Charlotte (both relationships since X-Factor 59), but he just goes nude flying. The rest of the team accompanies Bishop into the city. He says in his time, ground-level buildings were all slums, even the Waldorf. He stumbles across Stygut, the last of the 93 criminals that Fitzroy freed. Stygut absorbs the life forces of his two female companions and blasts Bishop, trying to overload him. Bishop tells the X-Men to stand back, then fights him. Ororo hits Bishop with lightning, to charge him up, and he executes Stygut. Ororo blows him back, saying X-Men don't (pardon me: "do not") kill. She draws his attention to the wounded bystanders, and he gets the point. Back at the mansion, he spends some time in the Danger Room, thinking. He goes to Ororo's bedroom and hands her his command insignia, thereby submitting to her leadership. Bishop is still in awe of his heroes. Bobby asks Forge to tie his bowtie, but turns out his mutant power doesn't work on ties. Bobby sees something is wrong, but he doesn't want to talk. Jean takes Xavier to her thinking log, from when she was a teenager. She sees he is bothered by the loss of his legs (iss. 280), but he doesn't want to talk. At Bobby's parents' house on Long Island, Mr. Drake doesn't like his son dating an Oriental. Outside, a policeman tries to arrest a prowler, Hiro (Opal's arranged fiancÈ, X-Factor 64), who knocks him out. Bobby gets Warren to do the tie; Warren thinks his dating days are over, since he is now "a blue-skinned Angel of Death." He sees himself, as the Avenging Angel, and they fight. Turns out it's Mystique playing with his head (she's staying at the mansion since Wolverine 52). Xavier calls Warren to his office, but he just flies off in a huff. Ororo berates Mystique; Forge, jealous of Bishop and Ororo, comes to her defense and bickers with them. He accuses Ororo of neglecting their relationship, and he proposes marriage. Bobby takes Opal to a restaurant, to meet his parents. Mr. Drake refuses to talk to her, and Bobby stands up to him, but their spat is interrupted by Hiro. He warns them they are about to be killed; just then ninja cyborgs attack, trying to kill the Drakes for vengeance. Piotr goes into town to buys tickets to Russia. Mikhail has been having headaches. He knocks into a pizza delivery guy and, enraged, merges him with a tree. Ororo soars high, considering Forge's proposal. Forge in a sub-basement, taking her hesitation as rejection. He finally fixes the Blackbird, and laughs to think he can fix anything but her. Jean slaps him with a towel, saying there's nothing wrong with her. Forge says she is incapable of life away from the X- Men, and that their only time together was in another dimension (iss. 226). He asks Jean if Ororo loves him; she says it's not her place to say, and Forge takes that as a negative. Hiro explains to Bobby that Tatsu'o wants vengeance for his interfering with his family (X-Factor 63-64). Opal surrenders herself to save the Drakes, but Hiro frees her. She refuses to let the boys fight her battles again, but Bobby ice-slides away with her. Hiro is in allegiance with her birth mother, Madame Tatsuo, and stays to fight the cyborgs. Bishop doesn't want Ororo to leave, since she's his only friend on the team. Mystique needles him; they compare the loss of Destiny to the loss of Randall. Forge interrupts and takes Mystique away, saying she's going insane. Hiro, overpowered and out of options, sets his self-destruct and blows up the restaurant. Opal cries out, but nothing can be done. She says it was a matter of honor that Bobby can't understand. Forge tells Ororo he's leaving with Mystique (as predicted by Destiny, iss. 255). Ororo says she needs him, but he knows better. "You'll never leave the X-Men -- not for good. You're going to stay trapped beneath the debris that is your life. Forever." He leaves her sobbing, "I was going to say yes," but Bishop is in the wings. Issue: Uncanny X-Men Annual 16 Date: 1992 Story 1: The Masters of Inevitability (36 pages) Feature Characters: Bishop, Archangel, Storm, Iceman, Colossus, Prof. X, Jean Grey Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Arize (Toymaker) Villains: The Death Sponsors: Timeslot, Sweepzweak, Deadair, Lead-In, Cancellator; Apocalypse Other Characters: Credits: Writer: Scott Lobdell Pencils: Brandon Peterson Inks: Terry Austin Letters: Chris Eliopoulos Colors: Joe Rosas Editor: Bob Harras Editor-in-Chief: Tom DeFalco Synopsis: Note: this is part 1 of Shattershot and occurs after X-Men II: Ann. 1. The Death Sponsors attack the rebel base on Mojoworld, then go to Earth to fight Arize, Spiral, and the fallen messiah. They work for a pirate network and want to embarrass Mojo. The X-Men rescue civilians in a burning building, where Bishop runs into Apocalypse, who holds him hostage to make Piotr let go of a main support beam (he wants to kill a latent mutant in the fire). Bishop threatens to blow his own head off, to eliminate himself as a hostage; Apocalypse says he's mad, and Piotr says that's not the solution. End program: it was a Danger Room scenario. Xavier questions if Bishop would have really killed himself; he shoots at Xavier's chair, blasts Bobby's ice sled, and goes to the showers. Jean is in Arize's head, calming him, and learns he is a genetic engineer who made a race of bipeds, who were immediately enslaved. So he made one with an independent streak: a messiah. At that point, he has amnesia. Xavier arrives; Arize says he created life but is responsible for the deaths of millions. The Death Sponsors find themselves in Tokyo, then lock onto Arize. The teleport to Westchester; Bobby, Warren, and Bishop defend the mansion, but Timeslot and Cancellator get past them and attack Jean and Ororo from the rear. Jean uses TK to get Timeslot off Arize, and all three are teleported to a spot over the mansion. Bishop breaks Lead-In's jaw; Cancellator punches Piotr up from the subbasements and into the sky; Sweepzweak uses his power to disrupt everyone's mutant powers. Bishop pulls a gun, but the Death Sponsors hold all the X-Men hostage, saying they just want Arize. He lets them go, but then shoots Timeslot in mid-teleport. They all explode, leaving Arize behind, with his memory restored. He goes off to learn about Earth, so he can fix his own world. Note: following is a pin-up of Strong Guy and Colossus. While helping a civilian, a terrorist with the ability to calculate every possibility shoots him, leaving him unconscious. He wakes as an earlier self, impaled on a wall, and knows he's hallucinating and dying. Amalgam, a.k.a. the Angel of Death, offers him death, or death and giving her his powers and memories, so he can live on in some sense. Amalgam shape shifts into other X- Men, trying to convince Warren to surrender. He does, and she kisses him, but something in him fights the process. Destiny, inside her, sees his time is not yet come, and one day he also will be called the Angel of Death. He wakes in a hospital bed, with the X-Men around him, who tell him he beat off the terrorists and killed their mutant leader. Note: following is a pin-up of Storm. Story 3: Roots of the Past (7 pages) Feature Characters: Storm, Bishop; Archangel, Iceman, Colossus, Beast (both in flashback) Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Villains: Other Characters: Randall, Malcolm (in flashback) Credits: Writer: Skip Dietz Pencils: Herb Trimpe Inks: Tom Palmer Letters: David Sharpe Colors: Kevin Tinsley Synopsis: Ororo, about to start a Danger Room session, goes to get Bishop, who still feels like an outsider. He says everything is different in his time: the mansion destroyed, even the lakeshore broken by Sentinels. Only a single oak tree was there, which was supposed to mark the graduation of the first X-Men and start of the next class, but Bishop realizes it isn't there. Ororo tries to help, but he says she doesn't trust his methods either, so he stalks off, falling asleep on the grounds. He wakes in a rainstorm: Ororo is watering a freshly planted oak, which, today, is just for him. Note: following are pin-ups of Archangel; Storm and Cannonball; and Colossus vs. Brood.
