Belasco plans to use her as an instrument for his elder gods, to take over the universe. Storm and Kitty from a different timeline have become a sorceress and a warrior in Limbo, but they are unable to help Illyana as Belasco takes part of her soul, corrupts it, and makes it into a Bloodstone, inserting it into a pentagram amulet and giving it to her. Storm takes Illyana to her sanctum and enters her mind, but finds the dark part of her soul already too strong to be defeated. Cat, whom Belasco has made truly cat-like, wants to kill Illyana, to prevent him ever using her. But Storm decides to take her as an apprentice, to teach her to fight Belasco. She shows her the oak tree she grew from an acorn she made as the beginning of her sanctum, and teaches her to use her astral form, and see the life-force in all things. She also sees the potential for evil in her own and in Storm's souls. During the lesson, a year passes. Cat attacks Storm and takes Illyana, promising her a way home. She and Ororo argue about how best to defeat Belasco: steel or magic. Three years pass. When Cat sees Magik is ready, they enter Belasco's citadel. Cat kills the twisted Nightcrawler, takes Magik to Belasco's altar, and tries to phase her back to earth. But Belasco catches them, makes Cat even more feline, and takes Magik as his apprentice.
