Rahne, watching disasters on the TV news, is moved to tears by the disparity between her life and that of the poor. Boom Boom tells her to just be "Zen" about it. Then, they discover that a river on the estate is polluted. Warlock, a big TV fan, detects a new, alien signal. He and Sunspot pull it to earth and find a vidiot: a TV-headed being from another dimension ruled by a corporate-military-media megalopoly. He and Boom Boom open a portal which transports all five there. Rahne is seduced by a Siren representing consumerism and temporarily buys into a politically correct life: husband, two rent-a-kids, everything money can buy, but morally empty. The rest overhear Rurdock plotting a cover-up. He rents a president to distract public opinion and is successful. Roberto realizes that this world is like America, where the press is assumed free and is therefore free to conspire and conceal. They wander down to the Third World, which is under constant bombardment from M.A.D., a double-headed figure representing America and Russia. As they squabble, they bombard the Third World. Boom Boom and Roberto attack them, spurring them to knock each other out. When they awake, the Third World realizes how puny they are and laughs at them. Boom Boom, Warlock, Roberto, and the vidiot attack the Megalopolis itself, despite the attempt of Situation Ethics to confuse the issues. They follow the bottom line to the power center, which contains an altar to Greed and is bedecked with symbols of the US and of the USSR. They are attacked by robots and decide to fight them. Rahne comes to her senses and joins them, follows a child who has discovered the Mediamogul behind a curtain (as in the Wizard of Oz), and pulls the plug on him. His soldiers disappear, and his people laugh at him. The New Mutants are returned to earth, where kids calling themselves the Wobblie Sneaker Gang had decided to sit in the polluted river as a protest. The media took note, embarrassing the megazine president enough that he ordered his printing factory to stop polluting. The river is saved, and TV is legitimized. They see animals who are really Skrulls, and the tiger tells Sebastian that the these teenagers have super powers. Roberto and Sam can't knock down milk bottles because the game is rigged as a test. Boom Boom wins by using her power, but the prize teddy bear has chemicals in it that make Rahne ill. In the first aid tent she and Rictor are knocked out, miniaturized, and put on display with other captives. Sam sees it but does not realize it is real. Boom Boom is accosted by a large Skrull, who is felled when Rictor uses his power to break out of the case. The New Mutants (and everyone else) flee, but the Skrulls attack, planning to sell them into slavery. The police arrive; and the carnival transforms itself into a spaceship and zooms away. The miniaturization has by this time worn off. Rahne and Cable deplore the fact that nothing is completely safe and innocent. NOTE: a team picture follows, still including Rusty and Skids. Sunfire arrives and beats off the attack. They ally to forestall the MLF from engaging in chemical warfare. Stryfe and Coy plan the destruction of the New Mutants. Rahne defends her interest in Rictor to Roberto, who finds the newcomer too moody (!). Sunfire, Warlock, Boom Boom, and Sam fight Kamikaze, Sumo and Dragoness (read: Cannonball, Blob, and Sunfire) and are winning until Zero and Stryfe show up and paralyze and capture them. Cable spots an intruder and attacks him. When he and Wolverine recognize each other, they begin to fight in earnest. Sam flirts with Dragoness; she kisses him; he filches the key from her (while his hands are shackled above his head!), and Boom Boom, not understanding and jealous, also kisses him. They impress each other. Rictor tips a water tower onto Cable and Wolverine to stop their fight. They ally to stop Stryfe, who decides to use human soldiers to stop the escaped mutants while reserving super-powered henchmen to pour chemicals. Sam and Sunfire use judo and threats to subdue and intimidate Stryfe's soldiers and find the chemical stockpile. Cable and Wolverine arrive, then the MLF. In the ensuing battle, Cable and Stryfe argue, Wolverine destroys the poison with his claws (?), and Rictor fells Dragonness, whose fire ignites crates of explosives. The New Mutants escape and hope that Stryfe was killed in the explosion. Franklin 2017 arrives at the ruins of Xavier's mansion. Ahab, alerted to his presence, takes his hounds to capture him. The New Mutants are working out in the Danger Room when visitors arrive from the future and attack them. Trying to flee, they are transported to the future themselves. Doug is shown to have been infected by Warlock and turned into Magus. Rahne realizes that Franklin has generated all this illusion, and both it and he are dispelled. Banshee and the Richards arrive, and all are attacked by Ahab and his robots. One of the hounds explains that the adult Franklin is a monster, and they were sent into the past to abduct him as a child. Ahab kills the blabbermouth. Franklin 2017 constructs another Rachel in the Museum of Natural History. When Sentinels attack, they ignore them, but the New Mutants, Banshee, and the Richards defend them. Franklin finally realizes he is under attack and destroys Sentinels and hounds alike. Adult Franklin confronts young Franklin, tells him his powers are bad, and removes them. This, however, means he will be unable to stop the future Sentinels, so Reed pleads with him to restore the powers, but since both Franklins locked them away, they cannot be restored. Story 2: Tribute the Second (10 pages) Feature Characters: Cypher (as a ghost), Wolfsbane Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Villains: Other Characters: Teddy, Winston Credits: none listed Synopsis: In the graveyard, the ghost of Doug Ramsey is sad that he is dead. Other ghosts tell him to get over it. Rahne visits, lays flowers on the grave, and asks Doug's permission to love Rictor. Vandals start spray painting the tombstones and attack Rahne. She shifts to wolf-form and nearly kills one, but since animals can sense ghosts, Doug is able to call her off. He tells her it's okay for her to love someone else. Pipeline has transmitted Storm, Boom Boom, Rahne, Rictor and Warlock from Westchester (Uncanny X-Men 270) to Genosha, an island nation off the east coast of Africa, made rich by using mutate slaves. Warlock's energy is gravely depleted. The rest are subdued, and Wipeout removes their powers. Hodge plans to try them for crimes against the state, and to make Warlock infect him with the transmode virus so that he can shape-shift. Warlock slips away from Hodge and shorts out the prison cell to let the rest escape. He is left behind, depleted, while the others split up, fleeing to the American embassy. Rahne doubles back to help Warlock and interrupts Hodge absorbing his energy, but is too late to save his life. He disintegrates into dust. X-Factor meets up with the X-Men in Westchester, and they realize that Havok is helping the Genoshans. They are called upon by the U.S. president. Issue: New Mutants 96 Date: Dec-90 Story: Flashpoint! The Gengineer makes Rahne a mutate, and she and Rictor separately admit their love. Cable, Gambit, Sunspot, Marvel Girl, and Forge are captured, their powers wiped out. Jubilee, Rictor, and Boom Boom are nearly captured, but the mutate lies to cover them. Seeing Rahne as mutate, Rictor plans to force Wipeout to return his powers, then shake the island apart. Storm restores Jean, but the three of them barely hold back Hodge, until a tracker bomb detonates, courtesy Forge, and Hodge flees. Jubilee, Boom Boom, and Rictor follow the Genegineer as his mutate tunnels into Hodge's complex, just in time for Forge's bomb. Boom Boom recovers Warlock's ashes. Storm restores powers to the rest, and Cable and Forge rebuild their limbs. Havok remembers himself and escapes Hodge. Rahne attacks Rictor until the Genegineer stops her. When Storm arrives and restores them all, her wolf-girl form is larger and stronger, courtesy the Genegineer. She, Rictor, Sunspot, Cannonball, Jubilee and Boom Boom take out some frustration on Hodge's lab and power source. Hodge attacks and downs Iceman, Banshee and Psylocke, but Gambit, Forge and Beast counter. Hodge disengages and races to defend his lab, using shoulder-spikes on Jubilee and Sunspot. The rest attack, most effectively the Genegineer, whom he kills, then he phases away. Cable and Storm lead the able-bodied mutants to follow him. Gideon's agent Eve poisons Emmanuel. Rictor starts for Genosha to rescue Rahne. Deadpool sneak-attacks Cable, sent to kill him by a Mr. Tolliver, but he talks long enough for Sam to sneak up on him; Rictor, Sunspot, and Boom Boom join in; and Deadpool is about to take them each out when Domino appears and downs him. She is Cable's old friend (flame?) and stays on to help with the remaining team. Deadpool is FedEx'd back to Tolliver, and Rictor runs off to save Rahne. Gideon breaks into the mansion to tell Roberto that his father has died of a "heart attack." NOTE: Cable's first name is revealed: Nathan. Cable chooses not to follow Rictor to Genosha, outraging Sam and Boom Boom. Thunderbird returns to find his reservation destroyed, all killed, and a Hellfire Club mask in the wreckage. Roberto tells Cable he is leaving. Cable is uncaring. Sam and Cable argue, Cable asserting that they are fighting a war and should not be sheltered from pain; Sam asserting that caring about your teammates eases that pain. Roberto leaves. The team is down to Sam and Boom Boom, and Cable plans to rebuild the team the right way: his way. Thunderbird joins up; Feral spies from the air duct and decides to do the same; Shatterstar appears, unconscious, on the Danger Room floor. He is in the Danger Room, beating up robots, and defeats Thunderbird, Cable, Domino, and Sam in turn. Then Cable gets mad, takes his sword, and punches his lights out. They take him to the med lab, and bad guys materialize in the Danger Room, tracking him. The Morlocks also break into the mansion, tracking Feral (better recheck the security systems!). Shatterstar wakes and explains that he has come seeking the X-Men's help against Mojo V and Spiral, one hundred years after Longshot's Mojo. Cable is skeptical. Boom Boom goes to fetch food for the new bohunk and catches Feral in the kitchen. She asks for asylum from the Morlocks. Shatterstar, Thunderbird, and Domino are attacked by the Imperial soldiers, and when the others assist, they learn that Feral is, well, feral. Shatterstar is also extreme, sticking a sword through his own body to kill the man holding him from behind. As soon as the soldiers are defeated, Masque shows up and demands Feral's return. Cable shoots Brute in the head, and Masque and Hump retreat. Cable assembles his new "fighting unit," including three new members with personal enemies. Cable decides too many of their enemies know their location, so they must relocate. He declares Xavier's dream "dead," and they must now fight for what's right. Sam and Boom Boom stay on, convinced they can still help the world. Stryfe plans terrorism in Genosha as payback for the X-Tinction Agenda. He removes his helmet, revealing that he looks like Cable. NOTE: the series continues as X-Force. In the hospital, Taki is introduced to the new New Mutants. They explain that the Alliance has been working its way up the East Coast, and they plan to stop them. Genetech has a meeting, in which they realize that the energy pattern being collected by the Alliance matches one they have been paid to duplicate. In Vail, Gideon and Toad play chess. At Niagara Falls, Harness forces Piecemeal to eat another energy deposit right over the falls. The New Mutants attack and defeat them, but Harness and Piecemeal teleport away. The New Mutants interrogate Tower and then break into Genetech. They easily defeat the guards, but they find that the New Warriors are defending the lab. Taki makes a small model of the saucer, and says that is all that she saw. That satisfies her and the police, and she invites them in for cocoa.
