Issue: New Mutants 77 Date: Jul-89 Story: Strange! They return Illyana to her home in Russia, and Dani and Brightwind are downed with a fever that Ship diagnoses as mystical in origin and refers it to Strange, who is currently pretending to be dead, but helps in his astral form when Dani erupts into fire on his doorstep. He sees that she is human (mutant Cheyenne), Valkyrie, and death together in one, and he removes her astral form. This, however, frees the other spirits in her, and she rampages, shooting fire from her hands. Rusty and Roberto lasso Brightwind while Sam tackles Dani. Strange talks to Dani on the astral plane and tells her she can control the spirits that are attacking her. She reasserts control over her body and uses her power to conjure an ice-maker to quench her flames. Strange uses his mystical powers to restore what Dani had destroyed. The ensuing fight takes them to Liberty Island, where the Blob says that the government wants Rusty to train the mutant babies from Inferno, who were supposed to be returned to their families. Near Ship, Avalanche causes a tidal wave, and Dani breaks free from her ice and is under control of Hela. Strange, realizing the true nature of the battle, transports the New Mutants (minus Rusty and Skids) to Asgard. Boom Boom explodes the floor of their prison, freeing the New Mutants, who free the wolf prince that befriended Rahne (see New Mutants special ed.). Hela opens a warp in space to connect Valhalla to Hel, and when Warlock tries to jet through it, he manages only to get himself, Boom Boom, and the wolf prince through. The rest are trapped with Hel and Dani. Empath attends Mass, and Amara asserts her pagan faith, telling him how she met a god: The New Mutants watch a lame movie featuring Hercules, and although Amara laughs, she later prays to her gods. Hercules responds in person, but everyone thinks he is an actor. To prove himself, he demonstrates his powers, but the New Mutants match them. Hercules tries to transport them all to Olympus, but Zeus refuses, annoyed that Hercules made that stupid movie. The gods need mortals to have faith in them, just as mortals need to have faith in their gods. Amara follows Hercules into New York City, where they foil a robbery and put out a fire. They rescue Suarez and sit with him in the hospital until he dies. Hercules opines on the frailty of moral life, and Amara finally believes he is a god. Issue: New Mutants 82 Date: mid Nov-89 Story: The Road to Hel... Volstagg's kids tell Boom Boom, Warlock, and Hrimhari to seek out the wizard Tiwaz for help against Hela, but en route they are captured by frost giants. Skids finally collapses, lowering her forcefield, and she and Rusty are captured by Freedom Force. Hela forces Eitri to make an uru sword for her. She plans to give it to Dani to kill Odin ignominiously in his sleep, thus dooming him to Hel. Rictor and Sam steal the sword and have to fight off Dani as they flee. Mist finally succumbs to Hela's domination. In prison awaiting trial (see X-Factor 1), Rusty sees the vulture jailed and threatening to break out with the help of Nitro. Dani retrieves the sword for Hela just as the New Mutants fall into the Abyss of No Return. They rescue them, and Hrimhari convinces the trolls that Hela is their true enemy. Volstagg's kids alert Balder and Karnilla that Asgard is endangered. Karnilla is able to make her enchanted stone people mobile. On earth, the Tinkerer sends the Vulture a new set of wings in prison, and he breaks out, carrying Rusty with him. Hela's army attacks the combined forces of Asgard: warriors, stone people, and flying trolls. While the forces of Hel battle those of Asgard, the New Mutants try to prevent Dani from slaying Odin. Eitri breaks out of prison with the Einherjar. Dani defeats Rictor, Sam, and Roberto, but Eitri attacks her then, damaging the Deathsword. On earth, Rusty frees Skids, and they pursue the escaped Vulture. Eitri reveals that the sword is flawed, and a proper blow will release its magic. Dani swings for Odin, but Sam takes the blow. The sword and Hela's magic shatter, freeing the various enthralled Asgardians. Defeated, Hela flees back to Hel. Issue: New Mutants 86 Date: Feb-90 Story: Bang! He refuses, however, and goes to Nitro's trial in Albany and frees him. Rusty fights the Vulture and both are hurt; Skids contains Nitro's explosion, and he turns to dust. In Asgard, the wounded are healed. The Crimson Commando takes custody of Rusty and Skids, falsely accusing them of aiding the Vulture. The MLF destroys a lab, an act of terrorism to try to force the release of Rusty and Skids. Issue: New Mutants 87 Date: Mar-90 Story: A Show of Power! In Asgard, the New Mutants are feasted as heroes. A messenger comes from Tiwaz, who gives Karnilla a vial which restores her people to flesh and blood and gives the New Mutants a extra-dimensional map of the way back to earth. Dani decides to remain in Asgard as a Valkyrie to restore the damage done by Hela. Stryfe demands the release of Rusty and Skids from custody and then sends the MLF to break them out. Cable attacks them but is defeated. Guards shoot Rusty rather than let him escape, convincing Skids to join the MLF. Warlock sails the New Mutants through the dimensions to earth, and they battle Mindless Ones en route. They arrive in New York in time to see Ship flying toward the city. He sends Spike, Coal, and String, who look like Warlock, Roberto, and Rahne, to steal the horn from Namorita. She is duly fooled, and with S.U.R.F. attack the New Mutants, who were searching the Atlantic looking for X-Factor's Ship. Sam convinces them they are innocent, and they team up. Ghaur blows the horn, and a sea monster attacks Atlantis. It also lashes out at Ghaur's vessel, and the horn is conveniently destroyed. The mutants lure the monster to the Hudson underwater canyon; Boom Boom explodes it, and, Rictor, Roberto, and Sharkskin bury it. Rahne calls Moira, who looks and acts severe. She calls her home to Muir Island. Rictor recognizes and harbors a private grudge against Cable. He orders them to design their own course of study and new uniforms. In their first Danger Room session, Rictor is overwhelmed and accuses Cable of setting him up to fail. Angry, he goes into the tunnels to beat up some Morlocks, and is attacked by Caliban and Sabretooth, who decide to fight each other. Cable takes the New Mutants and follows him. They defeat Caliban, but Sabretooth runs off with the wounded Rictor, who is forced to defend himself (and keeps making an undershirt appear and disappear: pages 16-18). The New Mutants find Rictor and are about to battle Sabretooth, then Masque intervenes, claiming the right to fight Sabretooth, then Caliban intervenes, claiming the right to fight Sabretooth. The New Mutants happily back off, allowing Caliban to break Sabretooth's neck. Rictor recuperates and comes across Cable working out in the Danger Room. He begins to respect him.
