The X-Men, having battled the Marauders, return to Westchester with wounded Morlocks (Uncanny X-Men 211). Kitty and Kurt are not too well, either. Moira sets up a field hospital, while Storm prepares the estate for attack. Dani foresees that the Morlocks and the New Mutants will die; Roberto squabbles with Magneto, then with Rahne, then with Doug; Magik is unable to heal Kitty, even in Limbo; Warlock is nervous because he senses his father nearby. Illyana teleports with Shan to check on her family, and their apartment blows up. The New Mutants follow through the Morlock tunnels, witnessing the carnage there. They pick up Shan and Illyana, then Warlock panics, carries them all into the tunnels, and then collapses just as his father appears. Illyana teleports them away. They stab Illyana through the heart, which restores her, and she restores the rest. Magus invades Limbo, and Dani uses her power to determine that his greatest fear is Warlock, who is currently frozen with fear. Illyana teleports them away. The wind up in medieval Scotland and defend the Bruce against British knights. The Bruce convinces them to continue running away from Magus, as he flees from the English until he gathers strength. Rahne reminds us that he finally defeats them at Bannockburn, and they leave. Rahne, Roberto, Amara, and Shan wind up in Westchester in the future (as in Days of Future Past) and are set upon by Sentinels. The future Sam and Dani come to their rescue and then describe to them how the Sentinels killed mutants and then superheroes, except for the ones evacuated to Lila's Dyson sphere. In the present, Magneto uses widget devices to tidy up the estate, preparing for when the New Mutants return. (He thinks they died when a plasma bolt wiped clean the Morlock tunnels: Thor 374). In the future, the Sentinels capture Lila, so the mutants go to her rescue, fighting in a ruined Manhattan, finally freeing her. Lila, Sam, and Dani escape to the Dyson sphere, leaving the rest behind to wait for Illyana to show up. Amara makes a volcano out of the Sentinel's Manhattan. Katie is now an old woman, leading the resistance, upholding Xavier's dream of one harmonious human race. They are attacked by arbs led by Roberto and Amara and are captured. Note: Doug and Warlock merge for the second time In the present, Magneto has a nightmare about his parents being shot by the Nazis and wrestles with whether or not he should join the Hellfire Club. Katie escapes, but Roberto plans to use psis to make the rest conform to his image of mutant-human relations. She uses her Soulsword to purge Limbo, splitting it and herself apart. In space, the Starjammers are on a planet trying to buy supplies to repair their ship, when Xavier comes across Illyana in a slave market. He and Binary attack, freeing her. On board the ship, Illyana describes the Marauder attack. Xavier, Lilandra, and Binary teleport with her to find the rest of the New Mutants, scattered in space-time. They arrive to find Limbo a paradise, purged of demonic influences. But S'ym is still in revolt and tells Illyana that he will be able to take over if Illyana ever removes her Soulsword. Xavier, now able to access Illyana's mind, helps her teleport to collect the rest of the New Mutants back to the Starjammer, and they are immediately attacked by Magus. Xavier augments the powers of Amara to hold together the planetary crust, Dani to form an illusion of a strong Warlock, and Shan to possess Magus's mind. Doug and Warlock merge and enter Magus's head, and reprogram him to be an infant. During a storm off the Carolina coast, Magneto tears apart a liner and forms a breakwater and decides with Storm that he should join the Hellfire Club, allying with them against the Marauders. The New Mutants help repair the Starjammer, and Illyana has an outburst, not wanting to return to Limbo because her evil nature is there. The ship comes under attack by the Shi'ar and evades them. Xavier chooses to stay with the Starjammers and gets Shan to force Illyana to take the New Mutants home. Illyana is angered at being used this way. Shan reminds Magneto that her brother and sister are still missing (since iss. 46) Magneto offers to help Illyana defeat S'ym and reassures her that if he could stop being an evil mutant, then she can overcome the demons in her soul. Amara conflicts with Selene, Doug with Tarot, Illyana with Empath, Sam with Jetstream. Dani and Thunderbird, and Rahne and Catseye renew friendships. Van Ostamgen presents a Roman statue of Selene to the Black queen, who reveals that it is forged and she is Amara's ancestor. Doug wins at poker, impressing Roulette. Later, Rahne and the rest of the team are shocked to find him with her, drunk. Before the two teams clash uselessly, Sam challenges the Hellions to find the person who swindled Van Ostamgen. Illyana spies on the Hellions, and ports the Mutants to Viper's hideout. They attack, only to find the Hellions have tricked them and have captured the Samurai and Viper, winning the challenge. Dani learns that Shan has left to rejoin her crimelord uncle, hoping to use him to find her brother and sister. Issue: New Mutants Annual 3 Date: 1987 Story: Anything You Can Do...! Warlock takes up the challenge, matching his shapeshifting skills, and the rest follow as they port and fight in New York, hold a beauty contest in Rio, play tennis and fight in London, and fight in Moscow until Illyana is able to port Warlock to Limbo. The Impossible Man is angered that his game was interrupted and threatens to change the earth to green cheese, so Illyana ports Warlock back, and the game continues in Tokyo. The New Mutants finally tell Warlock how to win: he can change color, while the Impossible Man cannot. Issue: New Mutants 55 Date: Sep-87 Story: Flying Wild! At the party, the Zyndarians attempt to make Sam look foolish, so Lila will accept Raek's proposition. They convince him to do drugs to be cool, abduct him, and plan to kill him. He blasts away; the New Mutants come to his rescue and subdue the aliens on board a garbage scow in the river. Lila arrives, recognizes Raek's greatest desire as jewels that she refused to steal for him, and Illyana sends him and his gang to Limbo as punishment. Tarot attacks Dani and Amara and soon finds her deck burnt by a magma bolt. Empath makes Amara and Thunderbird declare their feelings for himself and Dani, and Sam finally catches Bird-Brain. They make a friendly environment for him in the Danger Room, and Amara announces that she wants to transfer to the Massachusetts Academy. Doug finally talks to him, and he joins the team. The New Mutants on Bird-Brain's home island meet the Ani-mates and attempt to talk to them. They attack Bird-Brain, considering him a traitor because he befriended humans. When they see Rahne become a wolf, they befriend her. Roberto and Warlock return to the mansion, and Magneto realizes that the rest of the team is missing. Bird-Brain explains that he was being tested in a maze when he escaped. He now takes the New Mutants into the maze, where all are subdued by the Ani-mates. Animus and Rahne debate scripture: he doesn't want his creations acting like men or have names, and he plans to kill those who have rebelled against him including Bird-Brain. We learn that he is working for the Right, trying to prevent genetic mutations, and has produced his slave race of half-animals for his own profit. The New Mutants convince the Ani-mates to free them, and Doug stops the computerized auto-destruct sequence that Animus had begun. Hodge arrives, subdues the New Mutants, and orders his soldiers to kill the Ani-mates. They resist and free the New Mutants, Roberto and Warlock arrive, and together they attack the Right. Animus tries to shoot Rahne, but Doug takes the bullet for her. Hodge orders a bombing run, but his plane is downed by a giant squid-man. Bird-Brain defeats Animus and becomes leader of the Ani-mates. The New Mutants realize that Doug has been killed. Illyana sends Animus to Limbo to be tormented by demons. Issue: New Mutants 61 Date: Mar-88 Story: Our Way! Douglas Ramsey is dead. Rahne is hysterical; Sam blames himself; Illyana is angry. She transports the Smile-Faces to Limbo and gives them to S'ym. Bird-Brain stays on his island with his people, while the New Mutants return to Westchester. Magneto goes to the Hellfire Club, of which he is now a member (mistakenly referred to as White Bishop) and uses their equipment to locate the New Mutants. He learns of Apocalypse's attack and of the X-Men's troubles in Dallas (see X-Factor 25, Uncanny X-Men 226). He returns to the mansion, learns of Doug's death, and throws a fit, angry that he is unable to protect his students. He denies Illyana's request to help the X-Men, so she ports off by herself, only to find Dallas barred to her and the X-Men dead. Magneto blames humanity for Doug's death and for the Mutant Registration Act, but the New Mutants reaffirm their belief in Xavier's dream.
