Index to The New Mutants Version 2.1 last modified March 21, 2001 by Robert Diehl (rfdiehl@yahoo.com) Issue: Warlock 1 Date: Oct-99 Story: Cipher (22 pages) Feature Characters: Warlock Regular Characters: Esperanza "Hope" Ling, Chi-Chee Guest Stars: New Mutants: Wolfsbane, Magik, Cannonball, Sunspot, Magma, Douglas Ramsey; Night- crawler, Colossus, Shadowcat (all in flashback) Villains: Phalanx, Red Skull (all in flashback); Psi-Cops: Psiren, Relay, Fielder; Mainspring and Gate- keepers Other Characters: Phillip and Sheila Ramsey Credits: Writer: Louise Simonson Pencils: Pascual Ferry Inks: Mark Morales Letters: John Costanza Colors: Steve Oliff Editor: Bobbie Chase Editor-in-Chief: Bob Harras Synopsis: A transmode-virus owl flies above West- chester, and a trio of cloaked Psi-Cops follow him. He lands in a cemetery and reverts to human form: he is Warlock, visiting the grave of Douglas Ramsey (New Mutants 64). War- lock, an alien, fled ritual combat with his fa- ther, joined the New Mutants, and connected with Doug, infecting him with the virus. Both he and Doug were killed (New Mutants 18, 21, Ann. 2, 60, 95), but the Phalanx brought him back as a weapon, and he became Douglock, with part of Doug in him (Excali- bur 76ff). Red Skull took control of him for a while, which restored his memory (X-Men II: 1999 Ann.). He waits for Doug's parents to leave, then ex- tends himself down into Doug's coffin. He finds no trace of the transmode virus, and when he reemerges, the Psi-Cops attack with telekinesis, but he just morphs into monstrous shapes and beats them off. He flies to Project Mainspring, which is ex- perimenting with Phalanx matter: since he first brought the transmode virus to earth, he wants to destroy all of it. A Gatekeeper robot squashes him, and he feigns having been de- stroyed, then gets to the labs and frees a cap- tive girl and her monkey, Hope and Chi-Chee. Psi-Cops break in and attack, trying to destroy all Phalanx, and Gatekeepers counter-attack. Warlock realizes Chi-Chee has the virus and Hope is a carrier, like Typhoid Mary. She tries to avoid touching a Psi-Cop but transmodes him. Warlock considers letting her get de- stroyed, but then saves her. In space, Mainspring recognizes Warlock, and he wants Hope back. Issue: Warlock 2 Date: Oct-99 Story: Monsters (22 pages) Feature Characters: Warlock Regular Characters: Esperanza "Hope" Ling, Chi-Chee Guest Stars: Tony Stark (Iron Man), Happy Villains: Psi-Cops including Psiren, Scene Stealer; Gatekeepers Other Characters: Credits: Writer: Louise Simonson Pencils: Pascual Ferry Inks: Don Hillsman, Mark Morales Letters: John Costanza Colors: Steve Oliff Editor: Bobbie Chase Editor-in-Chief: Bob Harras Synopsis: Hope explains she is from Cuba and was va- cationing in Switzerland when the Phalanx took over (X-Force 38). Her parents were transmoded, but she was immune, so they used her as a lab rat. Now, everything she touches gets transmoded. Warlock explains that to his people (the Technarchy), the Pha- lanx are food by-product. If Phalanx spreads it forms a tower to mark the planet for de- struction. Gatekeepers attack, and they flee through the streets of New York. Warlock camouflages himself as a cab, and they get away. Psi-Cops deliberate: they exploded the Mainspring lab, but they still want to get Warlock and Hope, who meanwhile have hidden in the Metropolitan Museum, Warlock impersonating abstract sculpture. A Gatekeeper finds them and attacks, and Stark, who happened to be in the museum, dons his armor and comes to their aid; together he and Warlock rescue Hope, whom Warlock rushes away before she can infect him. He's exhausted, so she gives him some of her energy, then a damaged Gatekeeper finds her: they can sense when she transmodes something. Warlock blasts it, and then Psi- Cops surround them. Issue: Warlock 3 Date: Nov-99 Story: Into the Fire (22 pages) Feature Characters: Warlock Regular Characters: Esperanza "Hope" Ling, Chi-Chee Guest Stars: Villains: Psi-Cops including Fielder, Check, Psimon, Check, Scene Stealer, Psiren; Mainspring and Gatekeepers Other Characters: Credits: Writer: Louise Simonson Pencils: Pascual Ferry Inks: Mark Morales, Bud LaRosa Letters: John Costanza Colors: Steve Oliff Editor: Bobbie Chase Editor-in-Chief: Bob Harras Synopsis: Mainspring is angry because he can't catch Warlock and Hope. They are in the Psi-Cops' headquarters, battling them and losing. War- lock realizes they have various psi-powers and they're policing the transmode virus, to prevent a recurrence of the Phalanx. Hope is able to transmode inanimate objects, and Mainspring locates her and attacks. Psimon decides to team up with Warlock and Hope and battles his sister Psiren, who wants to eliminate them. She realizes they're not vil- lains, but they're too dangerous to live. Psimon escapes with Warlock and Hope, chased by Gatekeepers, and the Psi-Cops tele- port to safety. Chi-Chee falls and is captured by Mainspring. Psimon planned it that way: he realizes Hope is bonded to the monkey. Issue: Warlock 4 Date: Dec-99 Story: Control (22 pages) Feature Characters: Warlock Regular Characters: Esperanza "Hope" Ling, Chi-Chee, Psimon Guest Stars: Villains: Mole Man and Moloids, Mainspring and Gatekeepers Other Characters: Snook Credits: Writer: Louise Simonson Pencils: Pascual Ferry Inks: Mark Morales Letters: John Costanza Colors: Steve Oliff Editor: Bobbie Chase Editor-in-Chief: Bob Harras Synopsis: Psimon uses his TK to win money gambling in the street (3 cups with pea). Hope accidentally transmodes her hot dog, so Warlock trans- forms into a blimp to get away before Main- spring finds them. They hole up in an abandoned building in Harlem, and Psimon helps Hope calm her mind so she can eat, at least foods with lots of chemical additives. Mainspring has Chi-Chee tortured, and Hope feels it through their bond. She wants to go to his rescue, but Warlock re- alizes that's what Mainspring wants. Psimon helps her control her panic, and Warlock is jealous of him. Moloids bring the building underground. Mole Man asks for help but is interrupted by giant mutated monsters. Psimon is trapped by a lichen, so Hope concentrates, using her power to transmode it without hurting Psi- mon, who then uses the Voice to order the Moloids to dig under the monsters and trap them far below. Mole Man explains that pollution created the monsters and weakened his Moloids, which is why he stole a sewage treatment plant (Galac- tus the Devourer 1). Hope transmodes some lichen, then suggests he dig for gold and pay Tony Stark to repair the plant. On the surface, Warlock, Hope, and Psimon take shelter under a bridge, eat apples, and form a team. Mainspring realizes he can transform Chi- Chee and control the transmode virus without Hope. Issue: Warlock 5 Date: Jan-00 Story: Will! (23 pages) Feature Characters: Warlock Regular Characters: Esperanza "Hope" Ling, Chi-Chee, Psimon Guest Stars: Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Shadowcat (Kitty Pryde) Villains: Mainspring and Gatekeepers; Psycho-Man Other Characters: Dave Credits: Writer: Louise Simonson Pencils: Pascual Ferry Inks: Mark Morales, Hillsman, Koblish Letters: VLM Colors: Steve Oliff Editor: Bobbie Chase Editor-in-Chief: Bob Harras Synopsis: Mainspring tries to learn how to control Chi- Chee. Psimon helps Hope learn to control her power, while Warlock is jealous and yells at her for making more transmode virus. They are in a school, closed for Thanksgiving. Hope realizes Chi-Chee is on a satellite, so they go to Tony Stark to help locate it, but he isn't home, so they go to a computer expo. Kitty Pryde and Peter Parker are both there; Parker's friend Dave designed an astro- computer. Psycho-Man attacks with Fear; Hope's power has caused tremors in the Microverse. Psimon creates a barrier to protect Hope before her power goes out of control. Spider-Man shoots his web to punch the Hate button on Psycho- Man's box, which helps everyone attack him, so he shrinks them all down to his ship, where his equipment causes fearful hallucinations. Hope panics and starts transmoding things, so Psycho-Man switches to Doubt, but that just makes it worse, so he sends them back to the normal universe before he loses his whole ship. Kitty greets Warlock, but they are interrupted by winged Gatekeeper robots. Spider-Man goes to retrieve his camera, while Warlock cleans up the excess transmoded material. Mainspring has a robot retrieve the head of Bastion from the New Mexico desert (Aston- ishing X-Men 2). Bastion blasts off the robot's head with his eyes, puts his head on the ro- bot's body, and heads for Manhattan. Kitty phases them down to the Morlock Alley, where Bastion attacks them. Psimon erects a force field that disrupts Bastion's own, then Kitty phases through him, Warlock cuts through him, and Hope transmodes his robot body (the process is called trans-mech on in- animate objects) and leaves just the head. Kitty phases her hand through it, then phases it underground. Warlock decides they should go to Muir Is- land to get help locating Mainspring, who meanwhile has retrieved Bastion's head again. Moira tells her she should be able to trans- form things in other ways, and after some ef- fort she restores a glass that she had trans- moded. Mainspring has realized that transmoded ro- bots need an outside energy source and bio- logical control. Bastion's head works nicely, especially once Mainspring deletes Bastion's and Nimrod's programming, leaving only Master Mold. He places the head on a robot body and names him Template. Warlock locates Mainspring's satellite and tries to hack into its systems just as Template interfaces with them; he infests Muir's main- frame and reshapes it to his form. Hope has Warlock disconnect it from the generator, and it collapses. Warlock transforms into a rocket to take them all to the satellite. Mainspring has left the door open. In space, a planet had accepted the transmode virus from the Pure Phalanx, wanting the en- hanced perceptions and abilities, but now a tower has formed. To save humanity Main- spring rips out his robotic heart, which ex- plodes, destroying the satellite. The heroes return to Manhattan to help cut the tower off from its power supplies, but it keeps growing. Warlock dives into the ground to get to the source, taps the power, then re- leases it, burning the tower's cables. The Scar- let Witch busts the falling tower to dust and blows it out to sea. Warlock lets his father catch him, then transforms into a giant snake and bites his hand off, then realizes Magus has infected him with a variant of the virus Doug Ramsey and he used to devolve Magus to infancy (New Mutants 50). He shrinks, and the Psi-Cops catch him and tele- port everyone away, to Egypt. Magus finds them, so Hope has Psiren port them to a vol- cano, where Warlock can absorb enough en- ergy to activate Doug's Cypher power before his mind completely devolves. Magus arrives; the Psi-Cops attack him in unison; Warlock, with Hope wrapped inside him, jumps into Magus's mouth. Hope trans- forms Magus's cells, overwriting them with Doug's human gestalt, to make him see through human eyes. He starts to see himself as an abomination, the Psi-Cops attack again, and Magus bursts back into space. Warlock returns carrying Hope; she had given him one of Magus's cells to stop his devolution. Psimon chooses not to return to the Psi-Cops; he, Warlock, Hope, and Rahne are left on the tropical island and decide to go swimming.
