The girls are on their own, and they try to convince him to fight Emplateıs control; confused, he runs away through the wall. Jubes sends Paige after him, since he canıt really synch her power. M, impressed with the strategy, follows to finish him off. Paige catches Ev in the boiler room contemplating suicide, and he blasts her and catches her mid-husk. They both hurt, and Paige goes down, but Ev keeps himself from feeding on her. M arrives and tells him to synch with her power, to learn why Emplate never fed on her. He cries out in pain, and itıs over. The team reassembles, and Emma, who has been telepathically observing, says they need to solve the problem of M. Angelo answers the door while trying to stay out of sight and hires a man answering a job ad. He and Jono go to Xavierıs for help against Onslaught, but X-Cutioner stops their car, wanting to execute Angelo. He finds the Jono wounded (Angelo blew up the car to get away from X-Cutioner), and they stumble into a circus. He puts Jono underwater for safekeeping. Mr. Thomas is furious at Sean for not protecting Ev. Sean says worse things would happen if it werenıt for the school, and the Thomases realize they have to keep Ev there. Jubes tries to talk to him, her new best friend, but heıs still upset. X-Cutioner wants to kill Skin for murdering Angelo, not realizing Skin is Angelo, who doesnıt feel like explaining and brings down the big top instead. Emma talks to M: ³Youıre a young woman with secrets, Monet. Itıs one of the few things I like about you.² But she has her students to protect, so she invades her mind. M yields. X-Cutioner was Fred Duncanıs partner in the FBI and inherited his mutant caseload and weapon collection. He has gone vigilante. He finds some of Angeloıs skin and realizes it matches Angeloıs corpse. Still, he chases him into the wax museum. Angelo disguises himself as a mummy and realizes itıs getting easier to use his power. He swings toward X-Cutioner and gets blasted; the momentum blows him into the house of mirrors. He makes X-Cutioner question himself and then pulls the trigger on his energy lance. The blast bounces around the mirrors and puts X-Cutioner down. Angelo picks up Jono and wonders how theyıre going to hitchhike to Xavierıs. As the team flies a Frost Enterprises jet from St. Louis, Paige writes her brother Sam, comparing the team to his New Mutants. Theyıre not quite a family, yet, but getting there. Sean notices theyıre flying north to Canada and asks Emma whatıs up. Sheıs not telling, and he opens the escape hatch and flies away. Ev, without his seatbelt (long story), goes flying, too, and Paige has to catch him till they can break M out of her trance. Emma says theyıll sort things out when they get home. Sean finds himself on top of a mountain, not sure how he got there. He realizes Emma played with his mind and took the children. At the school, new handyman Chevy helped kill mutant Dennis Hogan (X-Men Prime) and is hiding out. He regrets it. Artie and Leech play in the biosphere, while Mondo lurks. Angelo is en route to Westchester and steals food at a rest stop on I-84. Jonoıs ill since the psi-plane went wacky. Angelo straps them both to the undercarriage of a tractor-trailer: he saw it in a movie once. Jubes questions Emma when they land somewhere other than Logan Airport, but she just plays mind games to goof up their powers. She blasts M with all ambient psionic energy and has her men take the kids to their new home. She is determined not to lose any more students and has regressed them to mental infancy. Toad is nearby. Sean gets to Montreal, tracking her, and escapes the police there. Would you like to be a member?² He finds Sasquatch, who also acts strange but tries to help. A tree falls on Emmaıs mansion, but she pays no mind. M brings her into the psi plane, saying Onslaught is affecting her and Jono, and her mind-control of the students is preventing them from fighting Toad, who has an ally who can transform mutants. Emma says she took Toad in out of pity after the Hellfire Club rejected him. He has made himself a kingdom of amphibians, which now breaks apart. Sasquatch crashes through the roof, two minutes too late to rescue them. Sean is close behind; he has reports about Onslaught and doesnıt blame Emma for being caught in the psychic backwash. Hugs all around, and even M and Jubes call a truce. Emmaıs salad attacks her, but it stops, and Mondo didnıt see it. Penance gorges herself, and her face is softening. Emma talks to M, sulking on the roof. No one trusts either of them. They agree they need to open up more, and share ice cream. Franklin, orphaned by Onslaught, is dropped off by his grandfather, who warns Sean to keep him safe. He takes to Artie and Leech like a duck to water, and they find a wounded blue lady (see iss. 23). Chevyıs uncle sends him back to the school, to stay out of sight or heıll be arrested. Angelo calls to say he and Jono are fine. Theyıre in Joshua Tree National Park in California, still hitchhiking, and Jono with a false beard. Bastion starts tracking down Jono. Howard the Duck stops to give Jono and Angelo a lift. Issue: Generation X 21 Date: Nov-96 Story: To Live and Die and Molt in L.A. Sean is stuck in traffic in New York City. The kids are restless, except for Mondo, who is enjoying America, and Paige is mooning over Jono. Sean gets fed up and orders the kids out of the van, telling Angelo and Ev to park it. The 51st Street subway is delayed, so dumped-guy meets late-for-work girl. Jubes and M have a spat over their relative worth. Armed men in a sedan hit a courier in the garage; Sean hears it and comes running, while Angelo and Ev attack. Sean uses his sonics to shield them from the bullets, but they are all captured by coils that dampen their powers. Itıs Fenris, and theyıre stealing a mutagenic wave generator, Methuselah-Alpha 001, which may be able to cure diseases but also causes mutations and kills mutants. They want to set it off in the city, as terrorists. M heard Sean and brings the rest of the team to the rescue. Andreas turns on the generator, to torture Sean and find out who heıs working for. He screams, breaking glass all over the block, and the rest of the teamıs powers go out of control. Before Andrea can have them all killed, Mondo breaks through the garage floor, and Ev synchs everyoneıs powers at once. Fenris get too close to each other, and their power activates. Boom. The mutants get up in the wreckage; Fenris reassemble and blast Sean, but the team comes running, and they flee. Late-for-work-girl gets a promotion and starts dating dumped-boy; adulterer-guy was also embezzlement-guy, and he gets arrested. Graydon Creed starts his anti-mutant campaign. Franklin starts to cry, missing his parents, and Paige sympathizes, saying she lost her father not long ago. Back at the school, local punks plan to attack with eggs, toilet paper, and soap, when they see a flame-headed skeleton and hanging mummy: Jono and Angelo. M lifts their car and tosses it, and the punks flee in terror. Emma observes, a bit concerned, trying as ever to keep the kids safe. She notices Nightmare lurking behind her and tells him to speak up. He has been playing tricks, like the salad (iss. 20), and now claims he needs her help to regain his realm. Sheıs not inclined to bother, but he wonıt let her sleep, and she realizes heıs trying to test her. She assures him she canıt invade his realm corporeally. Still, he gives her a nightmare of the children being attacked. He says itıs his way of thanking her: a warning of things soon to come. Jono and Paige go to Kentucky, and heıs impressed with the scenery. She tries to cozy up to him, but he reminds her he has no lips. M zooms away, and Sean follows, knowing thatıs what she really wants. She pleads with him not to see any more doctors, because her father had her poked and prodded enough. Paigeıs family is at the church preparing dinner, but Jono thinks theyıre trying to avoid him. She indignantly denies this. Bastion has Daria investigate Emma. Artie, Leech, and Franklin have befriended a reluctant Howard the Duck, who stopped by with Beverly to visit Jono and Angelo (see ı96 Ann.). They take them to see their sick friend, Tana Nile (the blue lady from iss. 20), whom they have kept secret. Jono tells Paige he can never be like her father. She says heıs a jerk for suggesting it, and she likes him for who he is. Sean lights a fire while M snoozes on the couch; heıs not sure how to help her. Emma says he let M manipulate him, and sheıs a threat, having lied to them. He says Emmaıs a threat, and she agrees. Jono leaves, apologizing for ruining the holiday. Paige gives him a Bronx cheer and cuddles unhappily with her stuffed dog. Jubes says they should tell each other everything, and she starts: she and Cynjen were troublemakers in the mall, till cornered by the police. Her mutant power manifested under the stress, and she escaped, but nothing would be the same again. M freaked out her nanny when she first manifested, but then all Monaco rejoiced, especially her father. Emplate arrives to debunk this myth, freezing everyone except M. He wants her to acknowledge the reason heıs trapped in an alternate dimension; she says he shouldnıt insult their motherıs sacrifice. He shows her his existence: grabbed by thousands of cold hands, and he wants someone to take his place. At age 13, Paige wanted mutant powers like her brother Sam, but as their mother said, you canıt rush things. She tried everything anyway, till she literally tore out of her own skin. She thanked God for the power. Emma says her parents had her committed ot a clinic when she heard voices in her head, and the guards abused her. She learned to control their minds and escaped, and she never looked back. Merry Christmas. Back at the school, Mondo is forced to wait in the snow. In Buddyıs in L.A., Tores has a tense phone conversation with Emma. Emma arrives at the school to find it covered with vines. Tom announces himself, and she finds her powers donıt work on him. Jubes flees Mondo and runs into Bastion. He shoots Mondo and puts Jubes to sleep. Tom gleefully attacks the tree house, and the kids, Howard, Beverly, and Tana Nile run for it. Artie, having seen one mutant massacre already (along with Leech, X-Factor 10), attacks with a hologram of Sabretooth, but Tom doesnıt flinch. He wants custody of the kids, but Howard has doused him with gas and now drops his cigar. Tom isnıt down for long, and Man-Thing arrives only to stare at Franklin. Howard tells the kid to relax, as Man-Thing envelops him, to keep him safe, and then rescues the rest of them. Tom retreats underground, but Penance follows. Gateway shows up, having tried to make amends for his part in the death of the Hellions (Uncanny X-Men 281), and he knows his time with Generation X is at an end. Tom has most of the team captive in a manner reminiscent of Krakoa (Giant-Sized X-Men 1), and Sean promises to kill him. Tom blames him for taking Theresa away and says he has to prove he can be trusted to protect Generation X. He orders him to kill Emma, and then manipulates her into attack him so he will. Emma pleads with him to kill her, to save the kids. He refuses, so she takes control of his mind, sacrificing herself for her students. Tom, exulting in destruction, slices Ev in half. Turns out the kids were just constructs full of worms, and Tom has them captive elsewhere. He has been spying on them through his Mondo clone. Penance attacks and splits him down the middle, and heıs gone. Sean still doesnıt know where the kids are. Deep beneath the ocean, a jellyfish-like transport rises, no longer under Tomıs control. The kids surface in the middle of nowhere, near Gordon Bennett. Franklin asked him why heıs such a grouch, and he complained about being dumped on earth. Tana Nile scolded him for talking that way around kids, then tossed him through a door to another reality. Franklin convinced Man-Thing to go after him, and Tana Nile got Artie to use his mind like a net to find him. Howard is in Nevernevernarniozbia, where Tweedlegreen wants him as a pet and rescues him from falling. He gets a Kree-like genie from a lamp. An empty ship glides through the nexus, captained by the Dark Hunter. Man-Thing lands Dorothy-like on the Red Witch of the Southeast. Munch-Things celebrate. A cross-dressing Dr. Strange fairy appears and agrees to take them to the king. The Red Witch of the Southwest attacks. Howardıs genie gives him a DeSoto to get home in, and he is not amused. Before he can use his wishes, black knights capture him. And so he winds up before a Doom-like king and a queen like Emma Frost. Leech breaks the Red Witchıs bubble, letting the others rescue Howard. Man-Thing instinctively protects Franklin from the black knights, but when the Dark Hunter arrives, he actually speaks, ³Oh, man! While they wander, Howard tries to figure out how Man-Thing can suddenly speak. They come to a Seuss-like town, go to the diner, and Franklin asks for food in rhyme. The cadence police soon arrive to arrest them, though, and Tana Nile hopes the jail can protect them from the Dark Hunter. Tana Nile says her race, from Rigel-Z, is ancient and forcibly colonized inferior planets. She tried to change their attitude but got jailed, so she fled to find the Avengers and instead found Generation X. Howard comforts her. Artie has a nightmare about Franklin and then confronts him, but Man-Thing protects him. The Dark Hunter arrives, and Tana Nile grabs and tosses him. They flee the jail, past the unconscious guards. The Dark Hunter nabs Artie, and Howard orders Man-Thing to follow, but heıs starting to decay and isnıt sure he can do it. They all wind up on Howardıs home planet, Duckworld. Howard is famous there, and every bird wants his autograph. He shows Artie the truth and convinces him to help him. Tana Nile swats the ducks away with Man-Thingıs decomposing body. She takes everyone to Howardıs dysfunctional family, who welcome them and turn out to be Cleaverish. This worldıs Dr. Richards is able to view earth, and Howard is a TV star. Man-Thing wants Franklin to tell the truth, but he explodes instead, pureeing Man-Thing and Leech. Howard yells, saying this isnıt his real family, and the illusion dissolves. He thinks Franklin has been creating all this and goes to see Dr. Richards, who is transformed from duck to human illusion. Tana Nile tells Franklin to stop, but he zaps her, instead, and goes off with his fake parents. Howard finds himself in a starry void, but the Dark Hunter retrieves him, having reassembled everyone. The Dark Hunter confronts Franklin, saying he used the Man-Thingıs connection to the nexus to create all this, and even he is a projection of Franklinıs pain. Franklin, furious, zaps him, but he forces him to face the (supposed) reality of his parentsı deaths. Reality dissolves, and they are in Man-Thingıs swamp. Franklin says farewell to his parents, but heıs not alone as long as he has his friends. Bastion observes, astonished. Jubes saves the guyıs life and then has to run from his buddies. Angelo is falling apart and dying of exposure, so Jono blasts off part of the organic raft to cover him. M, panicked, flies up to find help somewhere. Paige tells Jono to stop protecting her, so they can die as equals. Nightmare greets Emma as she wakes; he wants a favor in exchange for his warning (iss. 22). M pushes herself too far and falls unconscious into the water. Ev goes in, without powers, and saves her. She says theyıre going to die. Sean uses the schoolıs version of Cerebro but canıt find the kids. Emma joins him, and heıs amazed to see her alive: she had forced him to stun her, not kill her. She assures him the kids are alive. Jubes escapes the OZT facility but falls unconscious into the snow. She is found and returned. Bastion tells Jubes he killed Bishop, whom she remembers as saying she would be the last X-Man (Uncanny X-Men 288?). He shows her Wolverine captive, tortured, and broken. She laughs, knowing itıs untrue, and still refuses to provide information. She berates Bastion for fighting for the right to torture and kill. Daria, who has a conscience, doesnıt act on it. Her monitors pick up Bastionıs memories of his origin as a machine, which he tells her to ignore (see Machine Man/Bastion ı98). He says the team doesnıt really want these shallow dreams, and he doesnıt want anything fake. Glorian gets mad, and the fantasies dissolve. Angelo winds up with what he really wants, reality, and his friends back. The nanotechs within Daria defend her, sending a swarm of metal bugs to attack Jubes. They are NYPD detectives, staking out Leland. Emma scratches a bodyguard, runs, and gets cornered and knocked down in an alley. Dark Beast attacks the bodyguards and takes Emma. He is befuddled, remembering only part of his past, but still experimenting on other peopleıs body parts. They agree to help each other, and then Sean attacks. He loses, and Dark Beast is about to vivisect him, when Emma takes control of his mind, the first time she tried that power. Fontaine arrives with Leland, about to arrest Emma, but sheıs a quick study, and she has them take Sean to the hospital and forget everything. She plans to make a fortune in stocks and walks off with Dark Beast, the beginning of a beautiful friendship. At a protest rally at Nottingham Airfield in the UK, Sean watches for an international terrorist, Ramirez, who has a boy, Vortex, and is trying to steal nukes. Black Razors attack him and he escapes, but Sean is knocked down. In San Diego, Gen 13 gets word that Trance interrogated Carlos, then made him suicide. From his alternate dimension, Emplate observes a new source of food. Cerebro alerts Generation X to two new signatures, in San Diego, CA, and in Quantico, VA. Trance is in Quantico, planning to use Vortex to return home and claim his throne. Gen 13 gets Queelocke to teleport them, and then Generation X arrives. Emplate is not far behind, and they all fight over the boy. Trance offers Emplate Queelocke, which he puts in a trance and makes him open a portal. Grunge and Paige follow them through before it closes. Emplate and Trance soon realize theyıre immune to each other. The teams convince Vortex to help them, and he teleports them to New Orleans. Melee ensues; Trance entrances Sean, and he blasts Jono; Emplate swears to find a way to feed on Gen 13 but retreats; Trance entrances everyone to cover his own retreat. Emma takes Sean and Penance in disguise to her place in Florida, since OZT has begun. Tores has already told OZT to monitor Gilıs house, and now they transform into Sentinels and blast the house. They search for survivors and try to kill Tores, who is a mutant. Angelo grabs her out of the way, and the team runs for it, hiding in the sewers. Sean wonıt let Emma start the stove, and while she eats Spam, D.O.A. shows up with a message from Emplate: he always knows where M is and will tell them if they give him Penance. Daria is shocked at her bodyıs reaction to Jubesıs attack. She didnıt know she was part machine, and Jubes has to calm her down so she can get control of herself. Sentinels chase the kids through the sewers of Venice. Daria decides sheıs a freak, too, and frees Jubes. Emma psi-blasts Sean and hands Penance over. Sentinels attack.
