Scott and Madelyn are flying a geological survey team across Alaska, when they run into a mysterious storm similar to Shaman's attack in Uncanny X-Men 120), and a bright flash of light. They crash-land. Illyana helps Doug avoid getting beat up by Larry. In the Danger Room, Rachel has a psi-flash and recreates her own apocalyptic future. Xavier calms her mentally and learns she was shocked by her father's pain. Blaming Alpha Flight, she flies to Canada and attacks Shaman and forces Aurora to her Jeanne-Marie personality. The rest of the X-Men follow to restrain her, Northstar attacks Rogue and has his personality absorbed by her, and Xavier pulls her into the astral plane, lecturing her on not tampering with people's minds, regardless of the provocation. Then he switches Jeanne-Marie to her Aurora personality. Snowbird is ill and says an evil lurks in Ungava Bay. The two teams ally to investigate. Loki is trying to make a deal with They Who Sit Above in Shadow. He has to do a good deed for humans and prove himself worthy of favor. Rogue and Northstar locate a grassy field in the middle of the snow, and a wondrous city, from which Scott emerges and greets them, his eyes cured. He says the city is a paradise, and the humans there has been transformed and given great power, like mutants. Madelyne heals Puck, Sasquatch, Aurora, and Rogue of dwarfism, mad rages, split personality, and uncontrollable power. Shaman realizes Snowbird is missing, and Wolverine, Rodriguez, and Wilson go to track her. Xavier scans Scott and Madelyn's minds to ensure they are not being controlled, and learns that Madelyn is expecting a baby boy. Since in Rachel's timeline, she was the firstborn, she believes this means she will never exist, and runs off in a huff. Ross shows them the Magic Fountain/Firefountain that is the source of all these miracles, and Heather (the only human present) is drawn into the light and is transformed into another Guardian. Once all humans are so transformed, there will be no need to fear or hate mutants, but Xavier has his doubts. Shaman is attacked by monsters out of his own medicine bag, and Madelyn announces that he is dying. Then the ceiling collapses, and Rachel punches a hole through the wall to the Firefountain. When Talisman touches the fountain, it winks out for a moment, indicating it is magical in nature. Madelyne surreptitiously heals Wolverine of his berserker rages. He is unable to tell why he didn't continue looking for Snowbird, and Kitty suspects Beastmaster made him stop by controlling his animal nature. He goes now and finds Snowbird, curled up in a cave and dying. Pathfinder and Beastmaster appear and tell Logan there is no place for Snowbird and Shaman in the new world. Ross translates a rune stone that Talisman found: it is a dedication stone to Loki. Rogue strikes up a friendship with Northstar, whose mind she had absorbed last iss. Wolverine interrupts the party, having killed Pathfinder, and dumps Beastmaster's wounded body on the table. He and Ross explain that the fountain consumes all magic, and will kill all mystics. The teams divide on whether to support or reject the new world, and square off for a fight. Domenic reveals that the fountain also eliminated human creativity. Loki arrives to say it's still a good deal, and brings Snow Giants to force them to get with the program. Cyclops blasts him, and Rogue tries to absorb his power, but no go. The teams do, however, best the giants. Madelyn tries to save a wounded Ross, but Loki has taken back his gift. She pleads with him to let her save him, and he returns the power, under the condition that she no longer resists him. Loki thereby claims victory, but They Who Sit Above in Shadow intervene, declare him unworthy, and make him swear never to harm the teams. Loki leaves, taking back all his gifts. Issue: Alpha Flight Annual 1 Date: 1986 Story: Homebody! (38 pages) Feature Characters: Heather, Judd, Roger, Madison Jeffries, Jean-Paul, Jeanne-Marie, Michael, Snowbird, Walter (in flashback) Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Villains: Lillian van Loont (Gilded Lily), Esteban Diablo Other Characters: Sgt. Carter Synopsis: The spirit of Gilded Lily (see iss. 21) has become one with the mansion. She sends an electrical elemental to break Diablo out of prison to aid her, but he has had done with fighting super-heroes. Lily attacks Alpha Flight using the house as a weapon and captures Aurora, taking her through a mirror into darkness, which reverts her to her Jeanne-Marie personality. Diablo, under pressure, decides to help Lily possess Aurora's body and make it immortal, but Alpha Flight arrives, and he surrenders. Aurora reasserts herself and forces Lily to drink Diablo's formula, which disintegrates her. Diablo is returned to prison. Issue: Alpha Flight Annual 2 Date: 1987 Story: The Fire Inside! In Antarctica, Ice Station Redleaf houses Project Hotcore, a Canadian scientific effort to track geothermal energy. A volcano erupts unexpectedly, breaking the ice and dumping the base into the ocean. The surviving members of the team are attacked by cave men and dinosaurs. Alpha Flight is persuaded by Cody to investigate. Jeffries merges with Box and transforms into a jet and flies them there. Heather is downed by lightning; Jeffries transforms to a robot Tyrannosaur and helps Walter kill a real one. They realize the geothermal energy has created a pocket of warmth under the ice (the Savage land, or what is left of it after Terminus almost destroyed it in Avengers 257). While they drill through the ice to find it and Heather, she wakes with amnesia and no memory of how to use her suit. She runs the Cretacian gauntlet, surviving by her wits. She sees preparations for the sacrifice of mutant Neanderthals and attacks, freeing them. She forms them into a team and trains them to survive. They help their village defend itself against another tribe and are accepted back as equals. Heather is conked on the head and has her memories restored. Walter and Jeffries arrive and take her home. Issue: Alpha Flight Special I:1-4 Date: Jul-91 thru Oct-91 NOTE: These are reprints off issues 97-100 Issue: Alpha Flight Special II Date: Jun-92 Story: First Flight (39 pages) Feature Characters: Sean Benard (Groundhog), Logan (Wolverine), Walter, Alec Thorne (Smart Alec), Snowbird, St. Elmo, Mac, Jodi (Stitch), Michael; Marrina, Jeanne-Marie, Lil, Madison Jeffries, Jean-Paul, Windshear, Heather, Judd, Kara, Laura, Goblyn, Kyle, Knapp, Witchfire (all in forward flash) Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Canadian P.M. Pierre Elliott Trudeau Villains: Dieghton, Frazer, Arnolds; Egghead; Eel, Porcupine, Swordsman, Power-Man, Solarr, Rhino Other Characters: Synopsis: Detective Benard is cornered by corrupt cops and kills two. Logan arrives and fells the last one, then gets the Prime Minister to clear Benard and transfer him to Dept. H. Egghead comes to Canada and assembles a team of super-villains. Benard is given Hudson's first exoskeleton, and the team has its first training session. It doesn't go well, and Hudson tells Logan, "Second chances are what the Flight is all about." He wants to use Jodi, a girl with the ability to mentally manipulate metal, who is so afraid of her own mutant power that she has become a basket case. Egghead announces his intention to launch a nuclear missile at New York City unless the US turns over its armed forces to him. He knows it will never happen, but wants an excuse to bomb New York so his next threat will be taken seriously. The Flight attacks, and with some difficulty overcomes the villains. But Egghead has had time to start the detonation sequence. Elmo transmutes the missile into light and absorbs the energy, exploding himself into auroral light. Michael pulls Snowbird from the team, Benard quits, and Mac decides to split the rest into senior and junior teams. Issue: Northstar 1 Date: Apr-94 Story: Fast and Loose! (22 pages) Feature Characters: Jean-Paul Beaubier (Northstar) Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Heather McNeil Hudson (Guardian II) Villains: Gen. Jeremy Clarke and Weapon P.R.I.M.E.: Double Trouble, Tigerstryke (Mitchell), Yeti, Killspree; Arcade Other Characters: Clive; reporters including Klaus, Ritchie Ward; Raul, Max Belmonde Synopsis: Following the end of Alpha Flight, Clarke instructs PRIME to remove Northstar from the public eye. In Ibiza, Spain, Northstar has been partying. He is annoyed by the press, so he annoys them back. He goes off alone, and decides he is miserable. He is surprised by Raul in his room. PRIME attacks the wrong guy. Heather calls Northstar to warn him about Clarke, and that Ward was killed, and he will be blamed. He flies off to clear his head, just before PRIME catches up with him. Max, a nephew of Raymonde Belmonde (see Alpha Flight 7, he found him as a child and raised him), tells him he has been threatened. Northstar realizes all his old friends from Separatiste days are being harassed. He gets away from a fumbling PRIME and flies to Paris to protect Mariel, not aware that Arcade is waiting for him. Issue: Northstar 2 Date: May-94 Story: Fast and Furious! (22 pages) Feature Characters: Jean-Paul Beaubier (Northstar) Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Heather McNeil Hudson (Guardian II) Villains: Weapon P.R.I.M.E.: Double Trouble, Tigerstryke, Yeti, Killspree (flashbacks); Arcade; Carl Kerridge Other Characters: Mariel; Yves, Ritchie Ward (flashbacks) Synopsis: Northstar finds Mariel's Paris apartment in disarray, her missing. He is attacked by Arcade's robot mimes, but gets away. He remembers parting in anger from Mariel and Yves. Arcade shows up and tells him the game: he has planted 5 bombs around Paris, with clues to Mariel's whereabouts. Northstar races around town, finds the bombs, and then finds Mariel in the Metro, working up an uncharacteristic sweat in the process. He reconciles with Mariel, and Issue: Northstar 3 Date: Jun-94 Story: The Quick and the Dead! (23 pages) Feature Characters: Jean-Paul Beaubier (Northstar) Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Heather McNeil Hudson (Guardian II) Villains: Arcade; Weapon P.R.I.M.E.: Double Trouble, Tigerstryke, Yeti, Killspree Other Characters: Ritchie Ward, Max Belmonde, Mariel (flashbacks) Synopsis: Arcade has lured Northstar to a circus in Russia. He is captive and about to be killed by the circus people, who are under his control. Northstar defeats them without harming them, although the trapeze artist accidentally shoots her own clown. While waiting for Arcade's next clue, Northstar is accosted by PRIME again. He surrenders, but the circus crowd attacks them all, and Northstar has to convince Tigerstryke not to harm them, and instead locate and destroy Arcade's machinery. He finds Arcade's clue (a tarot card) and runs off. Heather (see next iss.) sneaks up and knocks Tigerstryke aside before he can catch him. New Orleans: Northstar goes into the tarot shop and is knocked out. He awakens in a recreation of a Quebec City bus terminal, after a terrorist Northstar had bombed it. The dead rise, and Northstar admits his guilt. He is then attacked by Issue: Northstar 4 Date: Jul-94 Story: Running on Empty! (23 pages) Feature Characters: Jean-Paul Beaubier (Northstar) Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Heather McNeil Hudson (Guardian II) Villains: Arcade; Short Fuse, Link, Barb, Sadista; Weapon PRIME's Tigerstryke; Carl Kerridge Other Characters: Graham Synopsis: Northstar fights Arcade's rag-tag team, but he is near exhaustion after the events of the day (iss. 1-3). Violating the laws of at least two countries, Heather arrives to help him, and they win easily. Arcade rewards him by offering him a videotape of the murder of Ward (see iss. 1). He flies to Vancouver to get it, asking Heather to stay behind to delay Tigerstryke. Northstar reaches his limit and has to rent a car to get to Vancouver. He arrives at Kerridge's mansion, who greets him and then attacks him. He had hired Arcade to exhaust him, so he would know what it is like to die as a normal human. He hates him for having "genetic and emotional quirks." Northstar remembers the bus in Quebec City. Northstar had saved all the people: there had been no deaths, that was just government propaganda. He bests Kerridge and takes the videotape that shows him as the one who paid Arcade to murder. Issue: X-Men / Alpha Flight 1 Date: May-98 Story: Survivors (32 pages) Feature Characters: X-Men: Cyclops, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Storm, Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Prof. X; Alpha Flight: Vindicator (Mac), Shaman, Snowbird, Aurora, Northstar, Sasquatch, Puck Regular Characters: Gary Cody, Lockheed, Heather McNeil Hudson Guest Stars: Marrina (flashback) Villains: Tundra, the Master (both in flashback); LeMieu; Hydra including Baron Von Strucker, Helmut Other Characters: Grace Synopsis: Note: this story takes place just after Jean's funeral, when Kitty joins the X-Men and before Cyclops leaves (Uncanny X-Men 138, Oct-80). It takes place after Puck is up-and-at-em (iss. 5) and before Aurora leaves (iss. 8) (Dec-83 to Mar-84). Cody, acting for the Canadian government, makes a suspicious bargain. In Westchester: Cyclops visits Jean Grey's grave and feels a void within himself. Nightcrawler doubts his ability to contribute to the team. Kitty and Colossus nervously prepare for their first date. In Canada: Cody calls on Alpha Flight, but only Mac shows. Cody suggests that Dept. H may be revived; Mac tells him to stop jerking him around and flies off. In Manhattan: Kitty, Colossus, and Nightcrawler are attacked and trounced by men in high-tech armor. Heather sees it on the news, and shows Mac that they are his design. The rest of the X-Men arrive, are likewise trounced, and are ported away. Mac fumes at Cody, who blames his assistant LeMieu. Xavier contacts Mac, Wolverine having recognized Mac's handiwork. The X-Men are being held in a Hydra facility in the Pacific. Strucker wants vengeance on Xavier for past defeats. Mac assembles the Flight. Issue: X-Men / Alpha Flight 2 Date: Jun-98 Story: Should Old Acquaintance Be Forgot... (32 pages) Feature Characters: X-Men: Cyclops, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Storm, Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Prof. X; Beast, Iceman, Angel, Marvel Girl (in flashback); Alpha Flight: Guardian (Mac), Shaman, Snowbird, Aurora, Northstar, Sasquatch, Puck Regular Characters: Gary Cody, Lockheed, Heather McNeil Hudson Guest Stars: Villains: LeMieu; Hydra including Baron Von Strucker; Magneto (in flashback) Other Characters: Synopsis: The Flight trains in the Danger Room against the original X-Men. They don't impress Xavier, but they're all he's got. Shaman has a vision: Mac killed in an explosion (iss. 12). The team attacks the Hydra base, and Mac confronts Strucker and is trapped. The X-Men have been able to escape during the battle, and Shaman explains that Canada gave Mac's suits to Hydra for money. Both teams come to Mac's rescue. LeMieu turns on Strucker and is shot down; Strucker ports away. Back in Westchester, the teams socialize. Mac is reconciled to Weapon X's defection.
