Michael brings Northstar out of his mystical coma (placed by the dark elves in iss. 82). Elizabeth goes off to battle the Sorcerer alone. Gamma Flight arrives to arrest Alpha Flight, does battle, and loses. Elizabeth sees the Gateway of Night is now open, evil armies are coming through, and to close it she must open the Gateway of Day, which is dangerous. She sends a vision to warn Alpha Flights and convince Gamma Flight to help them. The Canadian military attacks, but their courage cannot overcome the creatures of the Twisted Realms. Laura ports the Flights to help, but they are ineffectual, as well. Northstar is able to share his light with Aurora, reestablishing their original powers and temporarily driving back the hordes. The Sorcerer captures Elizabeth. She tells the twins to go to New York and get Dr. Strange to open the Gateway of Day. Jeffries reaffirms his love for Heather. The Sorcerer gloats at how much man has polluted the earth even without his influence. The twins find Strange, and he takes them through the dimensions, planning to open the Gateway of Day from the inside. The Flights have regrouped and attack the Sorcerer himself. Strange and Elizabeth together open the Gateway, letting the armies of the Shining Realms pour forth. They cancel out the forces of darkness, so everything reverts to normal. The real Winslow and his men are freed from limbo, and Alpha Flight plans a new beginning as a team. Issue: Alpha Flight 87 Date: Aug-90 Story: Building Blocks Part I: Loyalty (22 pages) Feature Characters: Jean-Paul, Kara, Laura, Goblyn, Heather, Michael, Walter, Jeanne-Marie, Elizabeth, Madison Jeffries, Lil; Colin Ashworth Hume (Windshear); Judd (flashback) Regular Characters: Gamma Flight: Nemesis, Auric, Silver, Wild Child, Witchfire Guest Stars: Logan (Wolverine); Canadian PM Brian Mulroney (flashback) Villains: Other Characters: Samuel Higgins of Roxxon Energy Research Synopsis: Wolverine, having smuggled into Canada following someone, knocks out the mounties that catch him. He feels he has to repay a debt. Windshear, hired by Roxxon to tame their out-of-control basement, fails. Wild Child has gone wild, and when the teams chase him, he injures Laura. Flashback: the Canadian Parliament decided to drop all charges against Alpha Flight and reinstate Dept. H. Then they disbanded Gamma Flight to make them Alpha's training team, which put Wild Child on a rampage, angry about being discarded. Michael, Elizabeth, Walter, and Aurora try to find Judd, and get nowhere until Walter threatens hospital workers, and Elizabeth and Michael cast spells to see the past. Judd was abducted out of the hospital. Roxxon imports Jeffries to fight their basement. It plugs into him and attempts to communicate, he goes into the cybernetic mind, and it spits him back out, screaming. He says there's an angry man inside the computer, which has taken over Roxxon's systems all over the world. Wolverine catches Wild Child in a park and dumps him at Heather's feet. Issue: Alpha Flight 88 Date: Sep-90 Story: Building Blocks Part II: Trust (22 pages) Feature Characters: Heather, Kara, Elizabeth, Walter, Michael, Jeanne-Marie, Madison Jeffries, Lil, Judd, Mac, Windshear Regular Characters: Nemesis, Auric, Silver, Wild Child, Witchfire Guest Stars: Logan (Wolverine); Val Cooper; Forge, Sean Cassidy (Banshee), Dr. Moira MacTaggert, Amanda Sefton (later Day Tripper), Tom Corsi, Sharon Friedlander (miscalled Mary) Villains: Remnant Men (see next iss.) Other Characters: Samuel Higgins Synopsis: Heather sees that Wolverine is alive (he died in Uncanny X-Men 227). Nemesis doesn't want to turn Wild Child over to the authorities. Judd has been taken to a secret lab in South Dakota. Elizabeth, Michael, Walter, and Aurora go there and battle disfigured humans. Aurora has trouble reconciling being a superhero and a nun. Roxxon's basement has been brought to Cooper's attention. She decides to bring Forge in. Unfortunately, she doesn't tell him, so when Jeffries, Lil, and Windshear go to Muir, they are attacked. Heather decides to break Wild Child out of prison to give the ill Wolverine a transfusion: they have similar healing factors. But he's already escaped. Elizabeth mystically learns the Master has Judd, and she opens an interdimensional portal to his base. They find Judd suspended in solution. Forge agrees to help. When he arrives, the Roxxon installation blows up, killing many. They find Mac hooked into the remaining machinery. Issue: Alpha Flight 89 Date: Oct-90 Story: Building Blocks Part III: Faith (22 pages) Feature Characters: Judd, Michael, Walter, Jeanne-Marie, Elizabeth, Heather, Kara, Laura, Jean-Paul, Madison Jeffries, Lil, Mac, Windshear; Marrina, Snowbird (flashbacks) Regular Characters: Nemesis, Auric, Silver, Wild Child, Witchfire Guest Stars: Logan (Wolverine); Forge Villains: The Master of the World and his Remnant Men Other Characters: Melanie Killgrave, Dr. Giloski, Darby and Susan Dean, Samuel Higgins; Quwrlln (flashback) Synopsis: Judd is a monstrosity. The Master has used his doctor to inject him with Scramble's enzymes (see iss. 30ff) and his own blood from when he was a dwarf, which has made him a monstrous dwarf. He wanted to mate him with Marrina's offspring and produce an ultimate warrior. Walter can fix it. Heather and Wolverine track Wild Child. They realize Gamma Flight is with him, and are later attacked by them. Laura is in the hospital, critically wounded (iss. 87). Her parents arrive. Walter makes Judd normal again, and a dwarf. The Master arrives and sends his Remnant Men to attack. At Roxxon's former lab, Jeffries's systems are overridden. Higgins explains that Mac really was on Ganymede for 10,000 years (see iss. 25). Forge merges with Jeffries, they fight their way in. Jeffries talks to Mac, and when he mentions Heather, Mac wakes up, realizing he is alive. Mac reiterates that he blasted himself to Ganymede 10,000 years ago, was nursed by aliens and returned to earth, found by Roxxon, and left to sleep for two more years, during which his subconscious mind took control of their computers, attacked them when they tried to unplug him, and then Jeffries woke him up. He is now part machine, and he reconciles with Lil, who helped kill him (iss. 12). Windshear quits Roxxon and tags along. Elizabeth inverts her father's bag over her head to find a spell to return the Remnant Men to normal. The Master retreats, content with his experiments to date. Elizabeth is comatose and is taken to the hospital. Heather lets Silver and Auric go home to China; Witchfire joins Alpha; and Nemesis ports away with Wild Child. Wolverine leaves. The team reassembles at the hospital, and sees Mac alive. Mulroney announces the re-establishment of Dept. H, and a new Alpha Flight base in Toronto, with Beta Flight for trainees and Gamma Flight for research. Heather readopts the name Guardian. Doom plans to hold trade talks with Canada. Issue: Alpha Flight 91 Date: Dec-90 Story: A Thirst for Power (22 pages) Feature Characters: Judd, Jean-Paul, Lil, Mac, Madison Jeffries, Heather, Michael, Elizabeth, Jeanne-Marie, Laura, Kara, Walter, Windshear, Witchfire Regular Characters: Gen. Before they can be interrogated, they self-immolate. Mac is behaving coldly mechanical, especially toward Heather. Doom is conducting trade talks (water for technology) with Canada and demands Alpha Flight as bodyguards. Elizabeth is recovering. Laura is comatose, and Heather announces her intention to have Alpha Flight adopt her. Walter and Patrick evaluate the erection of their new HQ, and their prospective new members. Doom is attacked by freedom fighters, Alpha Flight defeats them, and they self-destruct as before. Mac realizes Doom set the whole thing up, and he accuses him of being an impostor. He ports away, and the real Doom gives a cure for Latveria's water to the Symkarian ambassador while planning Kristoff's downfall. Clarke things Mac should lead the team, while Patrick supports Heather. Issue: Alpha Flight 92 Date: Jan-91 Story: Compromising Positions (23 pages) Feature Characters: Heather, Mac, Walter, Michael, Jean-Paul, Jeanne-Marie, Snowbird (dead since iss. 44, and she disappears after one appearance) Regular Characters: Gen. Jeremy Clarke, Kerry Patrick; Gary Cody (dead since iss. 52) Guest Stars: Reed and Susan Richards (Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman) Villains: Other Characters: Maj. Chasen, Cary Albertson, Eric, Albertson Synopsis: Heather battles Mac to test his abilities, but he cheats, using knowledge of the suit he designed. The government wants Mac to lead the team, and Roxxon biochip implants in all the team members, for communication. They refuse the chips, and Heather convinces Mac to investigate Roxxon's lab. He steals evidence that the chip is to be used to control the team. He and Clarke agree to kill the idea. Mac destroys the lab, his suit is overridden, he nearly injures Albertson, and Clarke fires Chasen as liaison. But he also convinces Mac to design a chip to let the government track the team. It was all a set-up, by Clarke and Chasen. Mac warns Heather that Clarke wanted to replace her, and they reconcile. Mr. Fantastic notices psychometric energy in the Yukon and prepares to investigate. Issue: Alpha Flight 93 Date: Feb-91 Story: Playgrounds of the Mind (23 pages) Feature Characters: Walter, Michael, Jeanne-Marie, Mac, Heather, Michael, Windshear, Witchfire; Elizabeth (in a vision) Regular Characters: Guest Stars: The Fantastic Four: Reed and Susan Richards (Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (the Human Torch), Ben Grimm (the Thing) Villains: Headlock (Arthur Goddard, see iss. 104) Other Characters: Synopsis: Headlock has felled the heroes, stretching their minds like taffy. He reads their memories: The Fantastic Four contacted Alpha Flight to investigate suspicious energies in the Yukon. Storm and Grimm go to a hockey game, while Mac, Walter, Michael, and Aurora assist the Richards in Tuktoyatuk, where they find the people are being controlled, and they retreat so they don't have to fight them. Aurora uses her light to calm them, while Reed tracks the telepath. Both fail. Mac finds Headlock's house, but when they approach, he exaggerates their insecurities, incapacitating them. Aurora forces him to admit his motivation: he does this because he can. He prepares to battle the rest of the heroes, who are on their way. Issue: Alpha Flight 94 Date: Mar-91 Story: Mind over Matter (22 pages) Feature Characters: Heather, Jean-Paul, Mac, Walter, Michael, Jeanne-Marie, Judd, Lil, Madison Jeffries, Windshear, Witchfire; Elizabeth (flashback) Regular Characters: Guest Stars: The Fantastic Four: Reed and Susan Richards (Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (the Human Torch), Ben Grimm (the Thing) Villains: Arthur Goddard (Headlock) Other Characters: Mayor McNulty Synopsis: Heather, Northstar, Grimm, Storm, Windshear and Witchfire go to investigate Tuktoyatuk and find the same mind-controlled people, and are attacked by their own teammates. Storm redirects Aurora's light into herself, freeing her. She, Witchfire, and Grimm free Sue, Michael, and Walter through the light of self-examination. Northstar nearly rips Reed in two, knocking him out. Heather blasts Mac, overloading the human part of his mind, and the computer part ousts Headlock and shields them all from him. They surround him, and since his is physically a wimp, he surrenders. Aurora's hair has gone white, and Lil has a lump in her breast. Issue: Alpha Flight 95 Date: Apr-91 Story: Life Lines (22 pages) Feature Characters: Jeanne-Marie, Lil, Kara, Heather, Judd, Jean-Paul, Elizabeth, Madison Jeffries, Mac, Walter, Michael, Windshear, Witchfire; Snowbird, Marrina (flashbacks) Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Villains: Loki, Llan the Sorcerer (flashbacks) Other Characters: Windshear's mother Jacqueline, her father Martin Freeman, and husband Franklin (flashbacks) Synopsis: Aurora goes to confession and tells her history. She does not want to use her new power (to give peace of mind) in violent ways. She gives hope to a group of homeless people, and begins to believe that may be enough. Windshear visits his grandfather's grave and recalls when his mother got remarried to a rich white Brit whom her father hated. He never saw him again. He now wants to be a better man, and stops a mugging. Heather and Judd train Kara. Heather comes across Lil crying in the shower. She tells her she has a lump in her breast. Heather convinces her to get a mammogram. Heather announces the new roster: Alpha is Heather, Mac, Walter, Jean-Paul, Judd, Lil, Jeffries, and Windshear. Beta has Michael as instructor, with Witchfire and Kara in training. Gamma is support and research, including Aurora in the psychiatric unit (no, as a counselor). Issue: Alpha Flight 96 Date: May-91 Story: Slave to the World (22 pages) Feature Characters: Heather, Windshear, Madison Jeffries, Judd, Lil; Walter, Mac, Jeanne-Marie, Jean-Paul, Snowbird, Marrina (flashbacks) Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Namor the Sub-Mariner, Susan Richards the Invisible Woman (flashbacks) Villains: The Master of the World Other Characters: Synopsis: The Master ponders his place in the world, from his ark orbiting high above the earth. The Master also decides to be less cerebral and more physically aggressive. He takes a serum made from Scramble's remains, so he can give himself a perfect human form. He improves his armor, and he kills his falcon. Issue: Alpha Flight 97 Date: Jun-91 Story: The Final Option Part 1: Decisions of Faith (23 pages) Feature Characters: Heather, Mac, Lil, Michael, Knapp (not seen since iss. 66), Madison Jeffries, Kara, Laura, Jean-Paul Regular Characters: Kerry Patrick, Gen. Knapp (not seen since iss. 66), Michael, and Jeffries are unable to biopsy Lil's lump. The Quwrlln mark the approach of Galactus's herald. Laura wakes from her coma (caused by Wild Child in iss. 87). Her is chased by the Consortium, because she helped a polluted, industrialized world return to agriculture and hurt their financial interests. She tries to get to Ben Grimm on earth, but mistakenly crash lands in Toronto instead. Alpha Flight investigates and is attacked by the Consortium. They try to limit damage to the city. Then the mother ship arrives. Issue: Alpha Flight 98 Date: Jul-91 Story: The Final Option Part 2: Decisions of Strength (19 pages) Feature Characters: Mac, Heather, Lil, Jean-Paul, Madison Jeffries, Walter, Windshear, Judd, Michael, Witchfire, Jeanne-Marie, Kara, Laura Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Her (J'Ridia/Starduster); the Avengers: Vision, Sersi, Steve Rogers (Capt. The Quwrlln activate defenses against Nova, and the planet goes "plink" and disappears. Alpha Flight and Her try to fight the Consortium in Toronto without hurting any bystanders. Northstar picks up a neat alien gauntlet, and Lil nabs a guy whose laser can pierce her skin. The Avengers arrive. NOTE: a pin-up of Witchfire follows. Issue: Alpha Flight 99 Date: Aug-91 Story: The Final Option Part 3: Decisions of Loyalty (23 pages) Feature Characters: Mac, Heather, Walter, Madison Jeffries, Lil, Judd, Jean-Paul, Windshear Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Her (J'Ridia/Starduster); the Avengers: Vision, Sersi, Steve Rogers (Capt. America), Natasha Romanova (Black Widow), Hercules, Jennifer Walters (She-Hulk), Wendell Vaughn (Quasar) Villains: The Consortium, Galactus, Nova Other Characters: Quwrlln Synopsis: The Quwrlln explain to Nova that they shunted their planet to another dimension, to hide from Galactus. But Galactus homes in on Nova and finds them. They send a signal to their last hope, Mac, whom they resurrected (see iss. 25, 89) in the hopes a human could fend off Galactus. The Avengers help Alpha Flight continue their fight against the Consortium, who demand the immediate surrender of Her, or they will conquer earth. The Quwrlln request comes to Mac, and he abruptly goes all machine-like and transports half the heroes off-planet. Issue: Alpha Flight 100 Date: Sep-91 Story: The Final Option Part 4: Decisions of Trust! (36 pages) Feature Characters: Heather, Mac, Walter, Lil, Judd, Jean-Paul, Windshear, Madison Jeffries Regular Characters: Guest Stars: Her (J'Ridia/Starduster); the Avengers: Vision, Sersi, Steve Rogers (Capt. America), Natasha Romanova (Black Widow), Hercules, Jennifer Walters (She-Hulk), Wendell Vaughn (Quasar); The Silver Surfer (flashback); The Fantastic Four: Reed and Sue Richards, Ben Grimm, Johnny Storm (flashbacks) Villains: The Consortium, Galactus, Nova Other Characters: Quwrlln Synopsis: Cap, She-Hulk, Widow, Walter, Lil, Judd, and Northstar, still in Toronto battling the Consortium, try to retreat to a Metro station. They steal a vessel to sneak aboard the mother ship. Judd and Widow commandeer the communications center and order the recall of the fleet. Cap and Northstar find the ship is powered by a miniaturized (and uninhabited) planet. Her, Windshear, Quasar, Heather, Hercules, Jeffries, Sersi, and Mac decide to stop Galactus from eating Quwrll. They quickly defeat Nova, and Galactus finds his powers don't work here. (The Quwrlln have chosen this dimension wisely.) The heroes topple him, but he retaliates with physical force. When he captures Heather, Mac reverts to human and attacks with fervor, toppling him, and he's in no shape to get up. He proposes a deal. They port Quwrll back to where it belongs, themselves to Toronto, and the Consortium's captured planet to this plane for Galactus to consume. But to energize this process, Mac has to sacrifice himself. He dies again.
