Shadow Man by Saille Slartibartfast

The borrowed car purred louder as Kurt Wagner tapped the gas with a bare foot. He had no destination in mind, he just drove. He needed to know there was nothing else in the world for him before returning to Westchester. If he did return.
His lips twisted in disgust. What the hell happened to me, he wondered. I remember having dreams. Other than just Xavier's. I remember thinking I would have a normal life someday, and, at times it seemed not so far away.
His thoughts returned to Amanda, as they had many times of late. I almost asked her to marry me so many times. I was always afraid. Too afraid to commit, too afraid to end it, but she put an end to my fear. She was gone, in Limbo the last he had known. They hadn't parted on good terms.
Cerise was long-gone also. An alien, Shi'ar Amazon, she had been so naive about so many things, but he had truly loved her. But not enough, I guess. She had been forced to return to the Shi'ar homeworld to atone for crimes against the empire. He could not stay with her, there had been the Dream and his duty to Excalibur.
He had lost both of them. He always claimed he wanted a normal life. He wanted to marry, to have children, but he feared the world his children would live in. His mutation would probably pass on, and his children may face the same thoughtless hate he did. I would wish that on no one, and never a child, he thought.
A small voice nagged the back of his mind. Maybe you fear your children would be monsters....demons...
No. He pushed the voice away. I am not a monster. He bared his fangs, staring at them in the rearview mirror. An indigo face with glowing eyes stared back at him. The skin around his eyes fanned into a fine network of wrinkles . Not only am I the sum of my mutations, I'm not getting any younger, either. He snorted and floored the accelerator, flipping the mirror higher to block out his reflection. Get thee behind me.
