Index to X-Man and related Version 1.2, last modified May 27, 2001 by Robert Diehl (rfdiehl@yahoo.com) Introduction: Where did Nate first land? What did he teach Onslaught? What is the last name of Jean's niece and nephew? Who owned the Irish pub Nate liked best? What city did Nate dream of destroying? Loeb: Jeph Loeb wrote nine issues, the first four of which replaced Cable during the Age of Apocalypse (summarized separately). Mr. Sinister genetically engineered Nate as the ultimate weapon, with power so great that it threatens to destroy him. His was the only book to continue the regular Marvel universe, where he fought himself as much as any villain. X-Man never had much to do with the X-Men but played well with other Marvel heroes. Best: the return of Maddie Pryor. Not-So-Much-the-Best: Sugarman as the ghost in Genosha's machine. Ostrander: John Ostrander wrote for a half-dozen issues and introduced Nate to the X-universe, usually explosively, and gave him the death- junkie Threnody as a girlfriend. Best: meeting Xavier, Rogue, and Exodus. Not-So-Much-the-Best: Maddie with Selene. Kavanagh: Terry Kavanagh took over for four years, the bulk of the series. He made Nate the miracle- worker of Washington Square Park, befriended him to Spider-Man, and let Maddie kill Threnody. Then Nate got into the club scene and went astray. He started dating his mother-twice-removed, spent a lot of time in Irish pubs, and was trailed around by Ness to no apparent purpose. Best: a mutant who directly helps people, trying to reestablish the Hellfire Club, not overlooking Joey and Galen, Threnody's death-addiction. Not-So-Much-the-Best: resurrection after Coldsnap; Roust, Jam, Bux, and Marita; The Purple Man, Tech-Gnomes, Sylph, Urchaala. Ellis & Grant: X-Man became a "Counter X" book in iss. 63, with an abrupt break in continuity, new writers Warren Ellis and Steven Grant, and an unrenlenting ruthlessness. Some people liked it, but the series was dead in a year. Best: hmm? I guess we should be happy we didn't have to witness Perpetua poking out her own eyeballs. Not-So-Much-the-Best: "a French girl with red eyes ate my hand," Ariel Olivetti's geriatric Nate, Maddie as an alternate Jean Grey, Nate instantaneously fixed, Nate as shaman. Honorable Mention: Maddie v. Tessa in the '96 Annual. Dishonorable Mention: All Saints' Day Anyway, Enjoy the index. Let me know if you find any mistakes.
